suggests that the boundary object concept can greatly help deepen considerations of social and cultural heterogeneity and adds insights and perspectives to better consider social and cultural aspects of visual communication. The theoretical concept of boundary objects, originating in heterogeneous distributed problem solving research, offer a pragmatic basis for enhancing visual communication to improve meaning production. The overarching issue for developing this direction in visual communication can be formulated through a broad question: In heterogeneous situations, how can research enhance communication involving visual objects for problem solving through a consideration of social and cultural aspects? I consider an example of cooperative design of maps to show how research can benefit from a consideration of boundary objects. The example highlights a cooperative mode of visual communication used in decision making involving both explicit and implicit goals and aspects from a cognitive perspective. The potential for improvements and better solutions in visual communication can benefit from a stronger consideration of the boundary objects concept.
Objectives
Cumulative childhood trauma (CCT) survivors are at a higher risk of suffering from interpersonal problems including couple dissatisfaction. Dispositional mindfulness is increasingly ...proposed as a potential explanatory mechanism of post-traumatic symptomatology and has been documented as a predictor of couple satisfaction. Most authors operationalize mindfulness as a multidimensional disposition comprised of five facets (i.e., Describing, Observing, Non-judgment of inner experiences, Non-reactivity, and Acting with awareness), but the role of these facets in the link between CCT and couple satisfaction has yet to be understood. This study aimed to assess mindfulness as a potential mediator in the relationship between CCT and couple satisfaction and to examine the distinctive contributions of mindfulness facets in this mediation.
Methods
A sample of 330 participants from the community completed measures of couple satisfaction, mindfulness, and exposure to eight types of childhood maltreatment experiences.
Results
Path analysis results revealed that mindfulness mediated the relationship between CCT and couple satisfaction. More precisely, two mindfulness facets acted as specific mediators, namely, Describing and Non-judgment of inner experiences. The final integrative model explained 14% (
p
< .001) of the variance in couple satisfaction.
Conclusions
Findings suggest that mindfulness may be a meaningful mechanism in the link between CCT and couple satisfaction. They also highlight that description of inner experiences and a non-judgmental attitude of these experiences may act as key components to understand the influence of CCT on adults’ lower couple satisfaction.
Objectives
Childhood cumulative trauma (CCT) has consistently been associated with relationship dissatisfaction in adulthood. Early parenthood is a challenging context where partners’ ...vulnerabilities, such as CCT history, tend to be exacerbated and further decrease relationship satisfaction. However, dyadic studies are lacking and the mechanisms that underlie this association in coparents remain unclear. An increasing body of literature supports dispositional mindfulness as an explanatory mechanism of this relationship, as it was negatively linked to CCT and associated with higher relationship satisfaction. Experiential avoidance, a maladaptive self-regulatory strategy commonly used by CCT survivors, looks promising in explaining how coparents’ lower mindfulness brings about relational dissatisfaction. Empirical literature highlights mindfulness as a predictor of experiential avoidance, which in turn is associated with relationship dissatisfaction. Using a dyadic perspective, this longitudinal study aimed to assess whether associations between CCT and relationship satisfaction were serially mediated by mindfulness and experiential avoidance in couples following the birth of a child.
Method
A randomly selected sample of 529 parental couples completed self-report questionnaires at two time points, 6 months apart. Path analyses based on the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model were performed.
Results
Path analyses showed a significant serial mediation from CCT to relationship satisfaction, sequentially through lower mindfulness and higher experiential avoidance, while accounting for relationship satisfaction at Time 1. Significant structural paths and indirect effects confirmed partners’ interinfluences.
Conclusions
Findings suggest that mindfulness and experiential avoidance are key factors to explore in parental couples facing relationship issues associated with childhood trauma.

This viewpoint offers a perspective on how critical GIS and critical GIScience can develop and go further in times of widespread concern and unease around the world.
