Juvenile Delinquency in Europe and Beyond
Book Chapter
The United States is very different from its European counterparts in many ways. Indeed, American “exceptionalism” has been documented in a vast amount of scholarly and popular writings on the ...western world (e.g. Ross, 1991; Madsen, 1998; Hellerman and Markovits, 2001; Lipset, 1955, 1997, 2000; Wrobel, 1996). This alleged American “exceptionalism” is important to understand in order to interpret differences in the problems of youth crime and victimisation between the US and other western countries, and – in a more narrow sense – American exceptionalism also has direct implications for the methodology, design and execution of the ISRD-2 study (which will be addressed in the section on the methodology). Although comparative research is interested in both similarities and differences (and in many ways, the United States is also very similar to the rest of the western world), we start this brief chapter highlighting some of the aspects that mostly differentiate the United States from its European counterparts.

In 2013, Farhi conjectured that for each \(m\geq 3\), every natural number \(n\) can be represented as \(\lfloor x^2/m\rfloor+\lfloor y^2/m\rfloor+\lfloor z^2/m\rfloor\) with \(x,y,z\in\Z\), where ...\(\lfloor\cdot\rfloor\) denotes the floor function. Moreover, in 2015, Sun conjectured that every natural number \(n\) can be written as \(\lfloor x^2/a\rfloor+\lfloor y^2/b\rfloor+\lfloor z^2/c\rfloor\) with \(x,y,z\in\Z\), where \(a,b,c\) are integers and \((a,b,c)\neq (1,1,1),(2,2,2)\). In this paper, with the help of congruence theta functions, we prove that for each \(m\geq 3\), Farhi's conjecture is true for every sufficiently large integer \(n\). And for \(a,b,c\geq 5\) with \(a,b,c\) are pairwisely co-prime, we also confirm Sun's conjecture for every sufficiently large integer \(n\).
Since cannon drum of agile shell-feeding system rotates frequently and intermittently, its motion must be steady. Outline of driving cam determines the motion of cannon drum, so it is necessary to ...select the proper outline of cam. Through analysis of parabolic outline and cycloid outline of the cams, the outline that combines the two curves is obtained. According to the demand of production, the value of the outline is revised, and then the method of fitting curve is used to get the expression of the angle of cam and the displacement of the driven part. Through analyzing the motion of the cannon drum, it is suggested that the angle of the cam is proportion to the displacement of the driven part. The cam with the specially derived outline can move steadily.
