Nei suoi commentari sul Vaticano II, Yves Congar menziona per ben quattro volte la critica rivolta da Maurice Blondel al «monoforismo». Per spiegare e verificare queste allusioni non basta riferirsi ...ai testi conciliari, ma occorre tener presente i precedenti del Concilio e lo stesso evento conciliare, di cui si raccontano alcuni anedotti. I decenni tra il Vaticano I e Vaticano II erano caratterizzati dal antagonismo tra due interpretazioni del tomismo e dalle polemiche contro il modernismo. Coniando il neologismo «monoforismo», Blondel cercò di dimostrare che modernismo e antimodernismo erano vittime dello stesso errore di un pensiero nozionistico «a senso unico», le cui conseguenze si notavano soprattutto nella concezione «a senso unico», vuoi immanentistico vuoi estrinsecistico, del rapporto tra natura umana e Rivelazione divina. I teologi invece che si ispiravano, direttamente o indirettamente, della filosofia blondeliana e il cui pensiero prevaleva finalmente nel Concilio, vedevano nella vocazione soprannaturale il compimento desiderato, anzi connaturale dell'esistenza umana. Tale pensiero concreto, poggiato su fatti storici, sfociava finalmente, nella Gaudium et spes, su una antropologia cristocentrica, di stampo blondeliano. These allusions cannot be explained and verified referring exclusively to the texts of the Concile. The precedents and the event of the Concile itself (form which some anecdotes are referred) must be taken into consideration. The decennies between Vatican i and Vatican ii were caracterized by the opposition between two different conceptions of thomism and by polemics against modernism. Blondel, introducing the new name of «monophorism», a «one way» thought relying exclusively on concepts, tried to show that both modernists and anti-modernists were victims of the same error, interpreting the relation between human nature and the divine Revelation by a «one way» thinking, immanentistic or extrinsecistic. Other theologians, instead, inspired directely or indirectely by Blondel's philosophy, and whose opinions prevailed finally in the Concile, saw in the supernatural vocation of mankind the profoundly desired and even connaturai fullfilling of man's existence. The outcome of this conception was the christocentric anthropology of the pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes, close to Blondel's philosophy.
This article compares the thought of two pioneers of the neoscholastic movement, both Jesuits and living contemporarily in Rome, Matteo Liberatore, from Italy, and Josepf Kleutgen, from Germany, both ...interested primarily in epistemological questions, but with quite different outcomes. After an overview of their similar biographies, the article stresses their academic differences. Liberatore desires to refute four modern types of philosophy, especially that of Rosmini, and develops a strictly Thomistic theory of knowledge. He considers first of all the content of knowledge, the 'ideas', and explains their abstraction in a quite Lockian manner. Kleutgen, by contrast, seeks to demonstrate to his contemporaries, that scholastic philosophers (a good many of whom he quotes) had already developed a theory of knowledge that both resembled and, in fact, compared favorably to modern theories. Considering first of all the act of knowledge he shows how the 'species' is abstracted from the given by virtue of the reflective power of the human mind (De veritate, q. 1, a. 9). The difference between these two «neoscholastic philosophies» is probably due to the different cultural context in which their authors grew up. L'articolo compara due pionieri del rinnovamento scolastico, l'italiano Matteo Liberatore e il tedesco Joseph Kleutgen, quasi coetanei, vivendo quasi sempre a Roma e interessandosi principalmente per la filosofia della conoscenza. Dopo un abbozzo delle loro vite parallele, si mette in risalto la differenza tra le loro epistemologie. Liberatore polemizzando contro quattro epistemologie moderne, specialmente quella del Rosmini, propone un tomismo di stretta osservanza, considerando principalmente il contenuto del conoscere, l''idea', con una concezione dell'astrazione di sapore ancora lockiano. Kleutgen invece intende mostrare che nei filosofi scolastici, dei quali cita un grande numero, si può trovare una teoria della conoscenza che nulla ha da invidiare a quelle moderne. Considera l'atto di conoscere che per la sua riflessività (De veritate, q. 1, a. 9) fa risaltare la 'specie' universale. Nascono così due 'neoscolastiche' sensibilmente diverse che si spiegano dal diverso contesto culturale onde provengono i due autori.

In this paper we discuss the discrete Fourier transform and point out some computational problems in (mainly) complex analysis where it can be fruitfully applied. We begin by describing the ...elementary properties of the transform and its efficient implementation, both in the one-dimensional and in the multi-dimensional case, by the reduction formulas of Cooley, Lewis, and Welch (IBM Res.paper, 1967). The following applications are then discussed: Calculation of Fourier coefficients using attenuation factors; solution of Symm's integral equation in numerical conformal mapping; trigonometric interpolation; determination of conjugate periodic functions and their application to Theodorsen's integral equation for the conformal mapping of simply and of doubly connected regions; determination of Laurent coefficients with applications to numerical differentiation, generating functions, and the numerical inversion of Laplace transforms; determination of the "density" of the zeros of high degree polynomials. We then discuss convolution and its application to time series analysis, to the multiplication of polynomials and of large integers, and to fast Poisson solvers. The paper concludes with an account of some recent results of Brent and Kung (Carnegie-Mellon Univ., 1975, 1976) concerning fast algorithms for manipulating power series.
