Musical instruments are central components of both the tangible and intangible heritage. However, discourse about music as intangible cultural heritage frequently overlooks the importance of ...instruments in conserving traditions inherited from the past and making live performance possible in the present, while curating instruments as tangible heritage often neglects their function for making music. This article explores two interrelated research questions about musical instruments as heritage. First, should instrument-crafting skills inherited from the past be sustained today, and, where industrial or mechanized manufacturing processes and the development of instruments is encouraged, what are the implications for sustaining music traditions? Second, given that instruments as crafted objects deteriorate over time, should instruments inherited from the past be displayed as objects, be restored to playing condition, or be updated and developed for contemporary use? To explore these questions, I take three case studies that juxtapose musical instruments from opposite sides of the world and from societies with very different philosophical and ideological approaches. The three case studies are Britain’s piano heritage, traditional Korean instruments (kugakki) in the Republic of Korea/South Korea, and “national” instruments (minjok akki) in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea/North Korea. Based on fieldwork, ethnography, and collecting and curating work, my choice of case studies allows me to look at both the country I call home (Britain) and the region where I have researched matters musical for 40 years (the Korean peninsula). But the case studies also demonstrate that there is no single answer to questions about the role of musical instruments when (and if) instruments are recognized as both tangible and intangible heritage.
Focussing on music traditions, these essays explore the policy, ideology and practice of preservation and promotion of East Asian intangible cultural heritage. For the first time, Japan, Korea, China ...and Taiwan - states that were amongst the first to establish legislation and systems for indigenous traditions - are considered together. Calls to preserve the intangible heritage have recently become louder, not least with increasing UNESCO attention. The imperative to preserve is, throughout the region, cast as a way to counter the perceived loss of cultural diversity caused by globalization, modernization, urbanization and the spread of the mass media. Four chapters - one each on China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan - incorporate a foundational overview of preservation policy and practice of musical intangible cultural heritage at the state level. These chapters are complemented by a set of chapters that explore how the practice of policy has impacted on specific musics, from Confucian ritual through Kam big song to the Okinawan sanshin. Each chapter is based on rich ethnographic data collected through extended fieldwork. The team of international contributors give both insider and outsider perspectives as they both account for, and critique, policy, ideology and practice in East Asian music as intangible cultural heritage.
Abstract Many volcanoes erupt compositionally homogeneous magmas over timescales ranging from decades to millennia. This monotonous activity is thought to reflect a high degree of chemical ...homogeneity in their magmatic systems, leading to predictable eruptive behaviour. We combine petrological analyses of erupted crystals with new thermodynamic models to characterise the diversity of melts in magmatic systems beneath monotonous shield volcanoes in the Galápagos Archipelago (Wolf and Fernandina). In contrast with the uniform basaltic magmas erupted at the surface over long timescales, we find that the sub-volcanic systems contain extreme heterogeneity, with melts extending to rhyolitic compositions. Evolved melts are in low abundance and large volumes of basalt flushing through the crust from depth overprint their chemical signatures. This process will only maintain monotonous activity while the volume of melt entering the crust is high, raising the possibility of transitions to more silicic activity given a decrease in the crustal melt flux.
This research was conducted to examine the influence of parental involvement, in the form of parent conversations, on mathematics achievement for high school girls. Data from the High School ...Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) public-use file provided a sample of 13,694 students, including 6,592 girls for our analyses. A scale for measuring parent conversations was developed and regression analyses were conducted to examine whether this scale variable predicted mathematics achievement. Results indicated that conversational parental involvement was a significant predictor of mathematics achievement for Black and White girls, but not Hispanic and Asian. Implications for research and policy initiatives are discussed.
Many individuals who experience a stroke exhibit reduced modulation of their mediolateral foot placement, an important gait stabilization strategy. One factor that may contribute to this deficit is ...altered somatosensory processing, which can be probed by applying vibration to the involved muscles (e.g., the hip abductors). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether appropriately controlled hip abductor vibration can increase foot placement modulation among people with chronic stroke. 40 people with chronic stroke performed a series of treadmill walking trials without vibration and with vibration of either the hip abductors or lateral trunk (a control condition) that scaled with their real-time mediolateral motion. To assess participants’ vibration sensitivity, we also measured vibration detection threshold and lateral sway evoked by abductor vibration during quiet standing. As a group, foot placement modulation increased significantly with either hip or trunk vibration, compared to without vibration. However, these changes were quite variable across participants, and were not predicted by either vibration detection threshold or the lateral sway evoked by hip vibration during standing. Overall, we found that somatosensory stimulation had small, positive effects on post-stroke foot placement modulation. Unexpectedly, these effects were observed with both hip abductor and lateral trunk vibration, perhaps indicating that the trunk can also provide useful somatosensory feedback during walking. Future work is needed to determine whether repeated application of such somatosensory stimulation can produce sustained effects on this important gait stabilization strategy.
We examined the relationships between high school CTE participation and indicators of career and college readiness using 2009 High School Longitudinal Study restricted-use data. Regression analyses ...of 2009–2018 data revealed significantly lower dropout rates for CTE participants, but only White CTE participants experienced better employment likelihood. CTE participants were mostly employed in service or manual labor occupations with below average wages and were significantly less likely to attend a 4-year college. CTE benefits were disproportionate by race and gender, and participation may have a “cooling out” effect on the aspirations of some students. Advising and urban education implications are discussed.
With a limited global supply of vaccines and an increasing vaccine hesitancy, improving vaccination coverage has become a priority. Current vaccination regimes require multiple doses to be ...administered in a defined schedule where missed doses may lead to incomplete vaccine coverage and failure of immunization programmes. As such, there is an ever-increasing demand to convert multi-dose injectable vaccines into single-dose formats, often called single administration vaccines (SAVs).
This review summarizes recent developments in the field of SAVs, with a focus on pulsatile or controlled-release formulations. It will identify the technical challenges, translational as well as commercial barriers to SAVs development. Furthermore, the progress of SAV formulations for hepatitis B and polio vaccines will be reviewed thoroughly as case studies, with a focus on the development challenges and the preclinical immunogenicity/reactogenicity data.
Despite the efforts to develop SAVs, few attempts have advanced to Phase-I trials. Considering the SAV development journey and bottlenecks, including commercial barriers from the early stages, may overcome some of the hurdles around the technology. The renewed global focus on vaccines since the COVID-19 pandemic could facilitate development of a new generation of technologies for pandemic preparedness including strategies for SAVs.
The global music industry has typically been theorized as a recording industry which embraces and controls the creativity of artists while simultaneously seeking to influence the tastes of consumers ...in order to generate profits. This article critiques conventional accounts by exploring the modes of exchange within the Korean music industry. It discusses censorship, control, and policing as the industry emerged in the early 20th century, how it reacted to changing government and media pressures in post-liberation Korea, and with the coming of satellite and cable television, how visual imaging became as important as audio soundtracks. The article shows how the recent rise of transregional entertainment companies has allowed the Korean music industry to leap-frog international "majors," so that in today's neo-liberal environment, the music industry's profits accrue from everything except direct sales of its primary products -- recordings.
Many people with chronic stroke (PwCS) exhibit walking balance deficits linked to increased fall risk and decreased balance confidence. One potential contributor to these balance deficits is a ...decreased ability to modulate mediolateral stepping behavior based on pelvis motion. This behavior, hereby termed mediolateral step modulation, is thought to be an important balance strategy but can be disrupted in PwCS.
Are biomechanical metrics of mediolateral step modulation related to common clinical balance measures among PwCS?
In this cross-sectional study, 93 PwCS walked on a treadmill at their self-selected speed for 3-minutes. We quantified mediolateral step modulation for both paretic and non-paretic steps by calculating partial correlations between mediolateral pelvis displacement at the start of each step and step width (ρSW), mediolateral foot placement relative to the pelvis (ρFP), and final mediolateral location of the pelvis (ρPD) at the end of the step. We also assessed several common clinical balance measures (Functional Gait Assessment FGA, Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale ABC, self-reported fear of falling and fall history). We performed Spearman correlations to relate each biomechanical metric of step modulation to FGA and ABC scores. We performed Wilcoxon rank sum tests to compare each biomechanical metric between individuals with and without a fear of falling and a history of falls.
Only ρFP for paretic steps was significantly related to all four clinical balance measures; higher paretic ρFP values tended to be observed in participants with higher FGA scores, with higher ABC scores, without a fear of falling and without a history of falls. However, the strength of each of these relationships was only weak to moderate.
While the present results do not provide insight into causality, they justify future work investigating whether interventions designed to increase ρFP can improve clinical measures of post-stroke balance in parallel.

A novel avian H7N9 virus with a high case fatality rate in humans emerged in China in 2013. We evaluated the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a candidate Vero cell culture-derived ...whole-virus H7N9 vaccine in small animal models.
Antibody responses induced in immunized DBA/2J mice and guinea pigs were evaluated by hemagglutination inhibition (HI), microneutralization (MN), and neuraminidase inhibition (NAi) assays. T-helper cell responses and IgG subclass responses in mice were analyzed by ELISPOT and ELISA, respectively. Vaccine efficacy against lethal challenge with wild-type H7N9 virus was evaluated in immunized mice. H7N9-specific antibody responses induced in mice and guinea pigs were compared to those induced by a licensed whole-virus pandemic H1N1 (H1N1pdm09) vaccine.
The whole-virus H7N9 vaccine induced dose-dependent H7N9-specific HI, MN and NAi antibodies in mice and guinea pigs. Evaluation of T-helper cell responses and IgG subclasses indicated the induction of a balanced Th1/Th2 response. Immunized mice were protected against lethal H7N9 challenge in a dose-dependent manner. H7N9 and H1N1pdm09 vaccines were similarly immunogenic.
The induction of H7N9-specific antibody and T cell responses and protection against lethal challenge suggest that the Vero cell culture-derived whole-virus vaccine would provide an effective intervention against the H7N9 virus.
