During June-July 2015, Public Health-Seattle & King County and Washington State Department of Health investigated 22 clusters of Salmonella serotype I 4,(5), 12:i:- infections. Serotype I 4,(5), ...12:i:- is the fifth most frequently reported Salmonella serotype in the US, but is uncommon in Washington. On Jul 29, 2015, WADOH and PHSKC requested assistance from CDC to identify the infection source, determine risk factors, and make recommendations for prevention. On the basis of cases investigated before August 2015, a supplemental questionnaire that went into more detail in addressing meat and livestock exposures was developed. Further study of the epidemiology and etiology of ASSuT resistance and Salmonella I 4,5, 12:i:- is recommended. This was the largest Salmonella outbreak in Washington in recent history, and highlights that pork is an important source for human Salmonella infections. Best practices in all parts of the pork production industry, from farm to processing plant, can help reduce the risk for future outbreaks.
Bonwitt et al provide details on the absence of asymptomatic mumps virus shedding among vaccinated college students during a mumps outbreak in Washington from February-June 2017. On February 8, 2017, ...a suspected case of mumps in a member of a fraternity or sorority at the University of Washington, Seattle campus was reported to Public Health--Seattle & King County. The majority of mumps cases in this outbreak occurred among fraternity and sorority members; other studies have demonstrated that close contact is required for mumps transmission to occur in a population with high mumps vaccination coverage. This evaluation found no laboratory evidence of asymptomatic mumps virus shedding.
HIV/AIDS is an urgent health issue in many areas of the world, particularly in Africa. In addition to reaching pandemic status, HIV/AIDS is also being elevated to the level of a security threat. ...While this is occurring both nationally and internationally, the United Nations is leading this securitization attempt. The UN has been able to engage in this attempt as it is the most influential international organization and the leading norm promoting organization. Securitization is an analytic process that traces how issues become identified and understood as security threats. This concept originated within the Copenhagen school of security studies, and this is the framework that this paper relies on to analyze the connection between HIV/AIDS and security. The connection between HIV/AIDS and security is now widely internalized, accepted and even promoted by national governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. However, the successful securitization of HIV/AIDS has yet to be fully explored, understood, or tested. This paper undertakes this task, and relies on the Copenhagen process of securitization to trace the security discourse initiated from the UN, down through four selected case studies. It identifies which of the key Copenhagen requirements for securitization have been met, and which have not been met, ultimately leading to the conclusion that the United Nations prompted a successful internal securitization and an unsuccessful external securitization. This paper concludes that the current Copenhagen school process of securitization is flawed and is inadequate for studying today’s emerging non-traditional threats. In particular, it is unable to trace the securitization of HIV/AIDS as a result of stringent and unrepresentative criterions. It attempts to move forward by offering a rationale and direction to begin updating the Copenhagen process of securitization.

In horses, S. zooepidemicus is a commensal bacterium that can cause respiratory, wound, and uterine infections (2). The health department investigated to determine the magnitude of the outbreak, identify risk factors, and offer recommendations.
