One of the most important goals of current and future sensor networks is energy-efficient communication of images. This paper presents a quantitative comparison between the energy costs associated ...with 1) direct transmission of uncompressed images and 2) sensor platform-based JPEG compression followed by transmission of the compressed image data. JPEG compression computations are mapped onto various resource-constrained platforms using a design environment that allows computation using the minimum integer and fractional bit-widths needed in view of other approximations inherent in the compression process and choice of image quality parameters. Advanced applications of JPEG, such as region of interest coding and successive/progressive transmission, are also examined. Detailed experimental results examining the tradeoffs in processor resources, processing/transmission time, bandwidth utilization, image quality, and overall energy consumption are presented.
We aimed to investigate the clinical utility of circulating tumor cell DNA (ctDNA) and exosome DNA (exoDNA) in pancreatic cancer.
We collected liquid biopsy samples from 194 patients undergoing ...treatment for localized or metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma from April 7, 2015, through October 13, 2017 (425 blood samples collected before baseline and during therapy). Additional liquid biopsy samples were collected from 37 disease control individuals. Droplet digital polymerase chain reaction was used to determine KRAS mutant allele fraction (MAF) from ctDNA and exoDNA purified from plasma. For the longitudinal analysis, we analyzed exoDNA and ctDNA in 123 serial blood samples from 34 patients. We performed analysis including Cox regression, Fisher exact test, and Bayesian inference to associate KRAS MAFs in exoDNA and ctDNA with prognostic and predictive outcomes.
In the 34 patients with potentially resectable tumors, an increase in exoDNA level after neoadjuvant therapy was significantly associated with disease progression (P = .003), whereas ctDNA did not show correlations with outcomes. Concordance rates of KRAS mutations present in surgically resected tissue and detected in liquid biopsy samples were greater than 95%. On univariate analysis, patients with metastases and detectable ctDNA at baseline status had significantly shorter times of progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio HR for death, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1–3.0; P = .019), and overall survival (OS) (HR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.4–5.7; P = .0045) compared with patients without detectable ctDNA. On multivariate analysis, MAFs ≥5% in exoDNA were a significant predictor of PFS (HR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.18–4.40; P = .014) and OS (HR, 3.46; 95% CI, 1.40–8.50; P = .007). A multianalyte approach showed detection of both ctDNA and exoDNA MAFs ≥5% at baseline status to be a significant predictor of OS (HR, 7.73, 95% CI, 2.61–22.91, P = .00002) on multivariate analysis. In the longitudinal analysis, an MAF peak above 1% in exoDNA was significantly associated with radiologic progression (P = .0003).
In a prospective cohort of pancreatic cancer patients, we show how longitudinal monitoring using liquid biopsy samples through exoDNA and ctDNA provides both predictive and prognostic information relevant to therapeutic stratification.

We report strong evidence for the utility of ascidian communities as sentinel organisms for monitoring nearshore Antarctic marine ecosystem response to climate-induced warming and glacial melting. Ascidians are one of the most common Antarctic epibenthic megafauna, but information on their distribution and the determinants is still scarce. In this study we investigated spatial patterns of ascidians in Marian Cove (MC), a rapidly deglaciating fjord in the West Antarctic Peninsula, one of the most rapidly warming regions on earth. We also analyzed key drivers structuring the communities and assessed their relevance to glacial retreat and following processes. The first applied ROV survey in MC discovered that ascidians were the most diverse (14 out of 64 taxa) taxa with the greatest abundance (~264 inds·m−2). Ascidian abundance and diversity greatly varied in space, by distance from glacier and/or depths, explaining ~64% of total megafaunal variations. Notably, in deep seabed (50–90 m) they shifted distinctly from early colonization communities near glacier (0.2 km to glacier) with predominance of two opportunistic species, Molgula pedunculata and Cnemidocarpa verrucosa, to mature communities at the most remote site (3.5 km). A set of analyses revealed that such shifts were related mostly to changes in sediment properties that develop in association with glacial retreat and consequent processes. Sediment composition, grain size and sorting collectively explained outward increasing physical stability apparently with decreased influence of glacial retreat, supporting ascidian community maturing at the deep and distant site. BIOENV analysis indicated that “distance” to glacier is one key factor influencing ascidian community structure in the deep seabed. Overall, the results of the analyses strongly indicated that physical disturbances (mainly sedimentation and ice scouring) accompanying glacial retreat are an important force shaping ascidian assemblages in the cove, and that these forces are altered by the distance from the glacier and water depth. Notably, in this fjord, the period of sea bed deglaciation was roughly proportional to the distance to glacier over the last six decades. This suggested that the ascidian shift identified in this study reflects a long-term successional process associated with glacial retreat in the past in MC, which in turn warrants to project future changes in this glacial fjord and possibly other similar environments.

Natural purification of pollutants is highly recognized as regulating ecosystem services; however, the purification capacity of tidal flats remains largely unknown and/or ...unquantified. A 60-day mesocosm transplant experiment was conducted in situ to assess the purification capacity of natural tidal flats. We adopted the advanced sediment quality triad approach, monitoring 10 endpoints, including chemical reduction, toxicity changes, and community recoveries. The results indicated that contaminated sediments rapidly recovered over time, particularly > 50% within a day, then slowly recovered up to ∼ 70% in a given period (60 days). A significant early reduction of parent pollutants was evidenced across all treatments, primarily due to active bacterial decomposition. Notably, the presence of benthic fauna and vegetated halophytes in the treatments significantly enhanced the purification of pollutants in both efficacy and efficiency. A forecast linear modeling further suggested additive effects of biota on the natural purification of tidal flats, reducing a full recovery time from 500 to 300 days. Overall, the triad approach with machine learning practices successfully demonstrated quantitative insight into the integrated assessment of natural purification.
Rice, feeding a significant portion of the world, poses unique proteomic challenges critical to agricultural research and global food security. The complexity of the rice proteome, influenced by ...various genetic and environmental factors, demands specialized analytical approaches for effective study. The central challenges in rice proteomics lie in developing custom methods suited to the unique aspects of rice biology. These include data preprocessing, method selection, and result validation, all of which are essential for advancing rice research. Our aim is to decode these proteomic intricacies to facilitate breakthroughs in strain improvement, disease resistance, and yield optimization, all vital for combating global food insecurity. To achieve this, we have created the RiceProteomeDB (RPDB), a React + Django database, offering a streamlined and comprehensive platform for the analysis of rice proteomics data. RiceProteomeDB (RPDB) simplifies proteomics data management and analysis. It offers features for data organization, preprocessing, method selection, result validation, and data sharing. Researchers can access processed rice proteomics data, conduct analyses, and explore experimental conditions. The user-friendly web interface enhances navigation and interaction. RPDB fosters collaboration by enabling data sharing and proper acknowledgment of sources, contributing to proteomics research and knowledge dissemination. The human rhinovirus (RV) is a positive-stranded RNA virus that causes respiratory tract diseases affecting both the upper and lower halves of the respiratory system. RV enhances its replication by ...concentrating RNA synthesis within a modified host membrane in an intracellular compartment. RV infections often occur alongside infections caused by other respiratory viruses, and the RV virus may remain asymptomatic for extended periods. Alongside qualitative detection, it is essential to accurately quantify RV RNA from clinical samples to explore the relationships between RV viral load, infections caused by the virus, and the resulting symptoms observed in patients. A reference material (RM) is required for quality evaluation, the performance evaluation of molecular diagnostic products, and evaluation of antiviral agents in the laboratory. The preparation process for the RM involves creating an RV RNA mixture by combining RV viral RNA with RNA storage solution and matrix. The resulting RV RNA mixture is scaled up to a volume of 25 mL, then dispensed at 100 µL per vial and stored at -80 °C. The process of measuring the stability and homogeneity of RV RMs was conducted by employing reverse transcription droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (RT-ddPCR). Digital PCR is useful for the analysis of standards and can help to improve measurement compatibility: it represents the equivalence of a series of outcomes for reference materials and samples being analyzed when a few measurement procedures are employed, enabling objective comparisons between quantitative findings obtained through various experiments. The number of copies value represents a measured result of approximately 1.6 × 10
copies/μL. The RM has about an 11% bottle-to-bottle homogeneity and shows stable results for 1 week at temperatures of 4 °C and -20 °C and for 12 months at a temperature of -80 °C. The developed RM can enhance the dependability of RV molecular tests by providing a precise reference value for the absolute copy number of a viral target gene. Additionally, it can serve as a reference for diverse studies.
Integrated microring resonators are well suited for wavelength-filtering applications in optical signal processing, and cascaded microring resonators allow flexible filter design in coupled-resonator ...optical waveguide (CROW) configurations. However, the implementation of high-order cascaded microring resonators with high extinction ratios (ERs) remains challenging owing to stringent fabrication requirements and the need for precise resonator tunability. We present a fully integrated on-chip second-order CROW filter using silicon photonic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to adjust tunable directional couplers and a phase shifter using nanoscale mechanical out-of-plane waveguide displacement. The filter can be fully reconfigured with regard to both the ER and center wavelength. We experimentally demonstrated an ER exceeding 25 dB and continuous wavelength tuning across the full free spectral range of 0.123 nm for single microring resonator, and showed reconfigurability in second-order CROW by tuning the ER and resonant wavelength. The tuning energy for an individual silicon photonic MEMS phase shifter or tunable coupler is less than 22 pJ with sub-microwatt static power consumption, which is far better than conventional integrated phase shifters based on other physical modulation mechanisms.

from new specimens collected during this cruise, including morphological redescription, morphometry, molecular biology studies and aspects of their distribution, reproduction and feeding.

specimens present an intraovarian oogenesis with blood vessel association for yolk precursor transference, with mature oocytes with 180–260 µm in diameter. Our data may suggest a broadcast spawner strategy. The spermiogenesis follows with the maturation of spermatids in spermatozoids in smaller clusters of cells and stored freely in the coelom prior to spawn ect-aquasperms. Finally, we point that one of the most intriguing aspects to date is its distribution, since most recent records were made in the West Antarctic Peninsula region while few records were made in the region of the original description (East Antarctic). This is our contribution to the knowledge of this species encompassing different scientific topics in a integrative perspective.
The driving performance of an off-road vehicle is closely related to soil strength. A bevameter is used to measure the soil strength, and it usually consists of two independent devices: a ...pressure-sinkage test device and a shear test device. However, its development and measurement processes have not been standardized; thus, researchers apply it in various fields according to their own discretion. In this study, a new bevameter was developed, and experiments were conducted to clarify the factors that affect the measurement performance of the bevameter. The pressure-sinkage test device was tested with circular plates of different sizes, and the results confirmed that the pressure-sinkage parameters decreased with the plate size. For the shear-test device, normal pressure was applied using a dead load to prevent normal-pressure variation due to displacement and speed. In addition, a spline was installed on top of the shaft connected to the shear ring to measure slip sinkage during the shear test. The results showed that the slip sinkage increased in proportion to the normal pressure and slip displacement, but the increase gradually decreased and converged to a certain point.
Reduction of foodborne illnesses and deaths by improving the safety of poultry products is one of the priority areas in the United States, and developing and implementing effective food processing ...technologies can be very effective to accomplish that goal. Irradiation is an effective processing technology for eliminating pathogens in poultry meat. Addition of antimicrobial agents during processing can be another approach to control pathogens in poultry products. However, the adoption of irradiation technology by the meat industry is limited because of quality and health concerns about irradiated meat products. Irradiation produces a characteristic aroma as well as alters meat flavor and color that significantly affect consumer acceptance. The generation of a pink color in cooked poultry and off-odor in poultry by irradiation is a critical issue because consumers associate the presence of a pink color in cooked poultry breast meat as contaminated or undercooked, and off-odor in raw meat and off-flavor in cooked meat with undesirable chemical reactions. As a result, the meat industry has difficulties in using irradiation to achieve its food safety benefits. Antimicrobials such as sodium lactate, sodium diacetate, and potassium benzoate are extensively used to extend the shelf-life and ensure the safety of meat products. However, the use of these antimicrobial agents alone cannot guarantee the safety of poultry products. It is known that some of the herbs, spices, and antimicrobials commonly used in meat processing can have synergistic effects with irradiation in controlling pathogens in meat. Also, the addition of spices or herbs in irradiated meat improves the quality of irradiated poultry by reducing lipid oxidation and production of off-odor volatiles or masking off-flavor. Therefore, combinations of irradiation with these additives can accomplish better pathogen reduction in meat products than using them alone even at lower levels of antimicrobials/herbs and irradiation doses. Effects of irradiation and additive combinations on the pathogen reduction and quality of poultry meat will be discussed in detail.
