The production of W boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV is studied using data corresponding to 20.3 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012 at the ...CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decays into electrons or muons and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. A total of 6636 WW candidate events are observed. Measurements are performed in fiducial regions closely approximating the detector acceptance. The integrated measurement is corrected for all acceptance effects and for the W branching fractions to leptons in order to obtain the total WW production cross section, which is found to be 71.1 ± 1.1(stat) - 5.0 + 5.7 (syst) ± 1.4(lumi) pb. This agrees with the next-to-next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction of 63. 2 - 1.4 + 1.6 (scale) ± 1.2(PDF) pb. Fiducial differential cross sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables. The distribution of the transverse momentum of the leading lepton is used to set limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings.
A search is presented for a high-mass Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → ℓ + ℓ - ℓ + ℓ - , (Formula Presented), (Formula Presented), and (Formula Presented) decay modes using the ATLAS detector at the CERN ...Large Hadron Collider. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3fb -1 . The results of the search are interpreted in the scenario of a heavy Higgs boson with a width that is small compared with the experimental mass resolution. The Higgs boson mass range considered extends up to 1 TeV for all four decay modes and down to as low as 140 GeV, depending on the decay mode. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model prediction is found. A simultaneous fit to the four decay modes yields upper limits on the production cross-section of a heavy Higgs boson times the branching ratio to Z boson pairs. 95% confidence level upper limits range from 0.53 pb at m H =195 GeV to 0.008 pb at m H =950GeV for the gluon-fusion production mode and from 0.31pb at m H =195GeV to 0.009pb at m H =950GeV for the vector-boson-fusion production mode. The results are also interpreted in the context of Type-I and Type-II two-Higgs-doublet models.
A theory of precipitation of radiogenic Si in Al is developed. The aim of this study is to predict quantitatively the variation of microstructural parameters such as precipitates number and sizes ...dependently on irradiation parameters. Analogy with deposition of thin films and formation of silver halides is discussed. A model for the precipitation of radiogenic Si in Al is developed on the basis of the theory of Ostwald-ripening in precipitation processes with constant rate addition of monomers. The model predicts that after the precipitation process enters the ‘late’ stage, the number of precipitates depends only on the ratio between the thermal and fast neutron fluxes but not on the absolute values of flux and fluence. A quantitative interpretation of the
spectral effect, suggested by Farrell Mater. Res. Soc. Symp. Proc. 373 (1995) 165 is given. The predictions of the model are compared with experimental results.
Lateral thinking, a key component of creative thinking, is crucial in problem-solving, scientific discovery, and everyday life. However, its assessment remains challenging due to its elusive nature. ...This study proposes and validates a novel verbal test to objectively measure lateral thinking. The test, consisting of triads of words with subtle associations, requires subjects to find commonalities between seemingly unrelated concepts. The study involves three groups: two student groups and one engineering group. Statistical analysis reveals that the test demonstrates validity, reliability, and representativeness. Notably, the probability distribution of the measured parameter shows low deviations from the normal law, suggesting that lateral thinking, like general intelligence, is a relatively universal personality trait. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of lateral thinking and provides a validated tool for its assessment, promoting creativity in education and various other fields.
Over the past decades little research has been conducted on the environmental behavior and effects of fluorinated organochemicals (FOCs). Recently it has been reported that perfluorooctane sulfonic ...acid (PFOS) is occurring worldwide. Little is known about the PFOS levels in organisms originating from the southern North Sea and the Western Scheldt estuary. In this study, we determined, for the first time, the PFOS‐exposure levels in Crangon crangon, Carcinus maenas, and Asterias rubens from these ecosystems. Concentrations on a wet‐weight basis in soft tissues of shrimp, crab, and starfish ranged from 19 to 520 ng/g, from 24 to 877 ng/g, and from 9 to 176 ng/g, respectively. These results show the existence of a PFOS pollution gradient in organisms along the Western Scheldt estuary, with the highest concentrations near Antwerp. The range of PFOS levels in shrimp and crab are slightly higher in coastal regions compared with sampling sites in open water. This study shows widespread distribution of PFOS in the Belgian and Dutch marine and estuarine environment at rather high concentrations.

Synergetics as a scientific area of research is in demand by society. The context of synergetics makes it possible for scientists of different specializations to interact fruitfully in the language ...of systematic understanding and search for new solutions. The presented work raises the question of how the theory of self-organization can help in the reformation of the higher education system, why this is relevant, and what can lead to the training of both teachers and students within the framework of an interdisciplinary approach. In the future, we will highlight the most important characteristics of complex systems and the simplest and at the same time conceptually simplest methods for analyzing complexity. As part of the complex systems modeling course, which will first be presented to students of physics and mathematics, and then, possibly, to students of other specialties, we present signals of seismic activity, gravitational waves and magnetic activity, and demonstrate how we can identify critical or crash phenomena in such systems. This kind of analysis can serve as a good basis for the formation of professional skills and universal competencies.
