We present the results of optical (R band) photometric and polarimetric monitoring and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) imaging of the blazar S5 0716+714 along with Fermi gamma -ray data during a ...multi-waveband outburst in 2011 October. We analyze total and polarized intensity images of the blazar obtained with the VLBA at 43 GHz during and after the outburst. Monotonic rotation of the linear polarization vector at a rate of > ~50degrees per night coincided with a sharp maximum in gamma -ray and optical flux. At the same time, within the uncertainties, a new superluminal knot appeared with an apparent speed of 21 + or - 2c. The general multi-frequency behavior of the outburst can be explained within the framework of a shock wave propagating along a helical path in the blazar's jet.
We report the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the emission-line object AS 386. For the first time we found that it exhibits the Be phenomenon and fits the definition of an FS ...CMa type object. The optical spectrum shows the presence of a B-type star with the following properties: Teff = 11,000 500 K, log L/L = 3.7 0.3, a mass of 7 1 M , and a distance D = 2.4 0.3 kpc from the Sun. We detected regular radial velocity variations of both absorption and emission lines with the following orbital parameters: Porb =131.27 0.09 days, semiamplitude K1 = 51.7 3.0 km s−1, systemic radial velocity γ = −31.8 2.6 km s−1, and a mass function of f(m) = 1.9 0.3 M . AS 386 exhibits irregular variations of the optical brightness (V = 10.92 0.05 mag), while the near-IR brightness varies up to ∼0.3 mag following the spectroscopic period. We explain this behavior by a variable illumination of the dusty disk inner rim by the B-type component. Doppler tomography based on the orbital variations of emission-line profiles shows that the material is distributed near the B-type component and in a circumbinary disk. We conclude that the system has undergone a strong mass transfer that created the circumstellar material and increased the B-type component mass. The absence of any traces of a secondary component, whose mass should be ≥7 M , suggests that it is most likely a black hole.
We use a combination of high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio and multiwavelength flux density and polarization observations to constrain the physics of the dissipation ...mechanism powering the broadband flares in 3C 279 during an episode of extreme flaring activity in 2013-2014. Six bright flares superimposed on a long-term outburst are detected at γ-ray energies. Four of the flares have optical and radio counterparts. The two modes of flaring activity (faster flares sitting on top of a long-term outburst) present at radio, optical, and γ-ray frequencies are missing in X-rays. X-ray counterparts are only observed for two flares. The first three flares are accompanied by ejection of a new VLBI component (NC2), suggesting the 43 GHz VLBI core as the site of energy dissipation. Another new component, NC3, is ejected after the last three flares, which suggests that the emission is produced upstream from the core (closer to the black hole). The study therefore indicates multiple sites of energy dissipation in the source. An anticorrelation is detected between the optical percentage polarization (PP) and optical/γ-ray flux variations, while the PP has a positive correlation with optical/γ-ray spectral indices. Given that the mean polarization is inversely proportional to the number of cells in the emission region, the PP versus optical/γ-ray anticorrelation could be due to more active cells during the outburst than at other times. In addition to the turbulent component, our analysis suggests the presence of a combined turbulent and ordered magnetic field, with the ordered component transverse to the jet axis.

= 2.0 ± 0.5), if a strong visual attenuation by a factor of ∼43 found through the spectral energy distribution modeling is not taken into account. Visual brightness variations with a stable period of 190 days but a variable amplitude of ∼0.2 mag were found in the ASAS SN data and attributed to variable circumstellar extinction in the dusty disk. We also found that the observed behavior of IRAS 07080+0605 is similar to that of the protoplanetary nebula Red Rectangle. The dusty disk of IRAS 07080+0605 shows the presence of carbonaceous particles (∼10%–20% of the total dust content) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission bands. However, IRAS 07080+0605 shows no obvious signs of the refractory element depletion, which is common in post–asymptotic giant branch (AGB) dusty binaries, or of a visual nebula. Absorption-line positions vary with an amplitude of ∼25 km s
−1
, suggesting the presence of a secondary component. Spectroscopic monitoring on a timescale from days to months is needed to search for regular variations. We conclude that IRAS 07080+0605 is most likely a binary system with an A-type component on its way toward the post-AGB evolutionary stage, as binarity is capable of explaining most of the observed features.
We present the results of polarimetric (R -band) and multicolor photometric (BV RIJHK) observations of the blazar AO 0235+16 during an outburst in 2006 December. The data reveal a short timescale of ...variability (several hours), which increases from optical to near-IR wavelengths; even shorter variations are detected in polarization. The flux density correlates with the degree of polarization, and at the maximum degree of polarization the electric vector tends to align with the parsec-scale jet direction. We find that a variable component with a steady power-law spectral energy distribution and very high optical polarization (30%-50%) is responsible for the variability. We interpret these properties of the blazar within a model of a transverse shock propagating down the jet. In this case a small change in the viewing angle of the jet, by unk1 super(c), and a decrease in the shocked plasma compression by a factor of similar to 1.5 are sufficient to account for the variability.
The quasar 3C 454.3 is a blazar known for its rapid and violent outbursts seen across the electromagnetic spectrum. Using γ-ray, X-ray, multiband optical, and very-long-baseline interferometric data ...we investigate the nature of two such events that occurred in 2013 and 2014 accompanied by strong variations in optical polarization, including a ∼230° electric vector position angle (EVPA) rotation. Our results suggest that a single disturbance was responsible for both flaring events. We interpret the disturbance as a shock propagating down the jet. Under this interpretation the 2013 flare originated most likely due to changes in the viewing angle caused by perhaps a bent or helical trajectory of the shock upstream of the radio core. The 2014 flare and optical polarization behavior are the result of the shock exiting the 43 GHz radio core, suggesting that shock crossings are one of the possible mechanisms for EVPA rotations.
The aim: to perform research of the species composition and condition of urban and suburban ecosystems of the Khopyor River Region. The route method was used for the species composition of woody ...plants. Also, using this method the conditions of the growth of trees and shrubs were described. The data of field ecological observations and researches were analyzed in the laboratory conditions. Plant species were identified by means of determinants. The geographical analysis and floristic belonging of plants in towns and villages is carried out. A diagnostics of the vital state of woody plants is carried out according to the complex of their external signs on ecologically different territories. It is found that the greatest species diversity is characterized by the family Rosaceae Juss. The poverty of the species composition of woody plants in the towns and villages of the research area is associated with insufficient introduction. The largest number of species of trees and shrubs in urban areas are characterized by parks and squares. Of great concern is the weakening of the vital condition of woody plants in the area of suburban highways. The greatest values of damages of the objects of the research are revealed at wood plants as part of roadside territories of towns and villages. The expediency to restore greening in ecologically problematic urban areas is obvious.
We present new optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIP supernova (SN), SN 2004et. In combination with already published data, this provides one of the most ...complete studies of optical and NIR data for any Type IIP SN from just after explosion to +500 d. The contribution of the NIR flux to the bolometric light curve is estimated to increase from 15 per cent at explosion to around 50 per cent at the end of the plateau and then declines to 40 per cent at 300 d. SN 2004et is one of the most luminous IIP SNe which has been well studied and characterized, and with a luminosity of log L= 42.3 erg s−1 and a 56Ni mass of 0.06 ± 0.04 M⊙, it is two times brighter than SN 1999em. We provide parametrized bolometric corrections as a function of time since explosion for SN 2004et and three other IIP SNe that have extensive optical and NIR data. These can be used as templates for future events in optical and NIR surveys without full wavelength coverage. We compare the physical parameters of SN 2004et with those of other well-studied IIP SNe and find that the kinetic energies span a range of 1050–1051 erg. We compare the ejected masses calculated from hydrodynamic models with the progenitor masses and limits derived from pre-discovery images. Some of the ejected mass estimates are significantly higher than the progenitor mass estimates, with SN 2004et showing perhaps the most serious mass discrepancy. With the current models, it appears difficult to reconcile 100 d plateau lengths and high expansion velocities with the low ejected masses of 5–6 M⊙ implied from 7–8 M⊙ progenitors. The nebular phase is studied using very late-time Hubble Space Telescope photometry, along with optical and NIR spectroscopy. The light curve shows a clear flattening at 600 d in the optical and the NIR, which is likely due to the ejecta impacting on circumstellar material. We further show that the O i 6300, 6364 Å line strengths in the nebular spectra of four Type IIP SNe imply ejected oxygen masses of 0.5–1.5 M⊙.
The infrared properties of blazars can be studied from the statistical point of view with the help of sky surveys, like that provided by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Two Micron All ...Sky Survey. However, these sources are known for their strong and unpredictable variability, which can be monitored for a handful of objects only. In this paper, we consider the 28 blazars (14 BL Lac objects and 14 flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs) that are regularly monitored by the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope since 2007. They show a variety of infrared colours, redshifts, and infrared–optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and thus represent an interesting mini-sample of bright blazars that can be investigated in more detail. We present near-IR light curves and colours obtained by the GASP from 2007 to 2013, and discuss the infrared–optical SEDs. These are analysed with the aim of understanding the interplay among different emission components. BL Lac SEDs are accounted for by synchrotron emission plus an important contribution from the host galaxy in the closest objects, and dust signatures in 3C 66A and Mrk 421. FSRQ SEDs require synchrotron emission with the addition of a quasar-like contribution, which includes radiation from a generally bright accretion disc (νL
ν up to ∼4 × 1046 erg s−1), broad-line region, and a relatively weak dust torus.
