The specular-reflection bistatic synthetic aperture radar configuration (SBSC) has not been widely used because of two drawbacks: the ghost target phenomenon and ground range resolution degradation. ...Hence, to obtain a bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BISAR) image in the SBSC geometry, these two problems should be solved. The ghost target phenomenon can be overcome by setting an appropriate geometry for SBSC; however, overcoming ground range resolution degradation requires an additional solution. In this study, we propose a modified range resolution improvement (RRI) method to overcome the degradation of the ground range resolution of SBSC BISAR images. First, the ghost targetphenomenon is avoided by setting an appropriate SBSC geometry. Second, a modified RRI method suited for SBSC is proposed to improve the ground range resolution of SBSC BISAR images. The drawbacks of the SBSC can be overcome using the proposed method. Various simulations, including electromagnetic analysis, were implemented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed method generates a much improved ground range resolution compared with existing methods.
Visual aura (VA) presents in 98% of cases of migraine with aura. However, data on its prevalence and impact in individuals with migraine and probable migraine (PM) are limited. Data from the ...nation-wide, population-based Circannual Change in Headache and Sleep Study were collected. Participants with VA rating scale scores ≥ 3 were classified as having VA. Of 3,030 participants, 170 (5.6%) and 337 (11.1%) had migraine and PM, respectively; VA prevalence did not differ between these cohorts (29.4% 50/170 vs. 24.3% 82/337, p = 0.219). Participants with migraine with VA had a higher headache frequency per month (4.0 2.0-10.0 vs. 2.0 1.0-4.8, p = 0.014) and more severe cutaneous allodynia (12-item Allodynia Symptom Checklist score; 3.0 1.0-8.0 vs. 2.0 0.0-4.8, p = 0.046) than those without VA. Participants with PM with VA had a higher headache frequency per month (2.0 2.0-8.0 vs. 2.0 0.6-4.0, p = 0.001), greater disability (Migraine Disability Assessment score; 10.0 5.0-26.3 vs. 5.0 2.0-12.0, p < 0.001), and more severe cutaneous allodynia (12-item Allodynia Symptom Checklist score, 2.5 0.0-6.0 vs. 0.0 0.0-3.0, p < 0.001) than those without VA. VA prevalence was similar between migraine and PM. Some symptoms were more severe in the presence of VA.
Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system synchronization using external clock signals can cause repeated Range-Doppler (R-D) map corruption when clock signal asynchronization problems ...occur between the transmitter and receiver. In this paper, we propose a signal processing method for the reconstruction of the corrupted R-D map owing to the FMCW radar's asynchronization. After calculating the image entropy for each R-D map, the corrupted ones are extracted and reconstructed using the normal R-D maps acquired before and after the individual maps. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, three target detection experiments were conducted: a human target detection in an indoor environment and a wide place and a moving bike-rider target detection in an outdoor environment. The corrupted R-D map sequence of observed targets in each case was reconstructed properly and showed the validity by comparing the map-by-map range and speed changes in the detected target with the ground-truth information of the target.
Obesity is defined as the excessive accumulation of body fat that ultimately leads to chronic metabolic diseases. Diets rich in saturated fatty acids (SFA) exacerbate obesity and hepatic steatosis, ...which increase the risk of hepatic insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Although microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in a range of biological processes, the implications of SFA-induced miRNAs in metabolic dysregulation, particularly in the pathogenesis of hepatic insulin resistance, are not well understood. This study investigated the implications of miR-96, which is induced strongly by SFA, in the development of hepatic insulin resistance. The liver of HFD mice and the palmitate-treated hepatocytes exhibited an impairment of insulin signaling due to the significant decrease in INSR and IRS-1 expression. According to expression profiling and qRT-PCR analysis of the miRNAs, the expression level of miR-96 was higher in hepatocytes treated with palmitate. Moreover, miR-96 was also upregulated in the liver of HFD mice. Interestingly, miR-96 targeted the 3'UTRs of INSR and IRS-1 directly, and repressed the expression of INSR and IRS-1 at the post-transcriptional level. Accordingly, the overexpression of miR-96 was found to cause a significant decrease in INSR and IRS-1 expression, thereby leading to an impairment of insulin signaling and glycogen synthesis in hepatocytes. These results reveal a novel mechanism whereby miR-96 promotes the pathogenesis of hepatic insulin resistance resulted from SFA or obesity.
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the major diabetic complications and the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Abnormal angiogenesis results in new vessels that are often immature and play a ...pathological role in DN, contributing to renal fibrosis and disrupting glomerular failure. Purple corn has been utilized as a daily food and exerts disease-preventive activities. This study was designed to investigate whether anthocyanin-rich purple corn extract (PCE) prevented glomerular angiogenesis under hyperglycemic conditions. Human endothelial cells were cultured in conditioned media of mesangial cells exposed to 33 mM high glucose (HG-HRMC-CM). PCE decreased endothelial expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α induced by HG-HRMC-CM. Additionally, PCE attenuated the induction of the endothelial marker of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM)-1 and integrin β3 enhanced in HG-HRMC-CM. Endothelial tube formation promoted by HG-HRMC-CM was disrupted in the presence of PCE. In the in vivo study employing db/db mice treated with 10 mg/kg PCE for 8 weeks, PCE alleviated glomerular angiogenesis of diabetic kidneys by attenuating the induction of VEGF and HIF-1α. Oral administration of PCE retarded the endothelial proliferation in db/db mouse kidneys, evidenced by its inhibition of the induction of vascular endothelium-cadherin, PECAM-1 and Ki-67. PCE diminished the mesangial and endothelial induction of angiopoietin (Angpt) proteins under hypeglycemic conditions. The induction and activation of VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) were dampened by treating PCE to db/db mice. These results demonstrate that PCE antagonized glomerular angiogenesis due to chronic hyperglycemia and diabetes through disturbing the Angpt-Tie-2 ligand-receptor system linked to renal VEGFR2 signaling pathway. Therefore, PCE may be a potent therapeutic agent targeting abnormal angiogenesis in DN leading to kidney failure.
SALMON (Scalable Ab-initio Light–Mattersimulator for Optics and Nanoscience, http://salmon-tddft.jp) is a software package for the simulation of electron dynamics and optical properties of molecules, ...nanostructures, and crystalline solids based on first-principles time-dependent density functional theory. The core part of the software is the real-time, real-space calculation of the electron dynamics induced in molecules and solids by an external electric field solving the time-dependent Kohn–Sham equation. Using a weak instantaneous perturbing field, linear response properties such as polarizabilities and photoabsorptions in isolated systems and dielectric functions in periodic systems are determined. Using an optical laser pulse, the ultrafast electronic response that may be highly nonlinear in the field strength is investigated in time domain. The propagation of the laser pulse in bulk solids and thin films can also be included in the simulation via coupling the electron dynamics in many microscopic unit cells using Maxwell’s equations describing the time evolution of the electromagnetic fields. The code is efficiently parallelized so that it may describe the electron dynamics in large systems including up to a few thousand atoms. The present paper provides an overview of the capabilities of the software package showing several sample calculations.

Solution method: Electron dynamics is calculated by solving the time-dependent Kohn–Sham equation in real time and real space. For this, the electronic orbitals are discretized on a uniform Cartesian grid in three dimensions. Norm-conserving pseudopotentials are used to account for the interactions between the valence electrons and the ionic cores. Grid spacings in real space and time, typically 0.02 nm and 1 as respectively, determine the spatial and temporal resolutions of the simulation results. In most calculations, the ground state is first calculated by solving the static Kohn–Sham equation, in order to prepare the initial conditions. The orbitals are evolved in time with an explicit integration algorithm such as a truncated Taylor expansion of the evolution operator, together with a predictor–corrector step when necessary. For the propagation of the laser pulse in a bulk solid, Maxwell’s equations are solved using a finite-difference scheme. By this, the electric field of the laser pulse and the electron dynamics in many microscopic unit cells of the crystalline solid are coupled in a multiscale framework.
Vascular dementia (VaD) is a progressive cognitive impairment caused by a reduced blood supply to the brain. Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is one cause of VaD; it induces oxidative stress, ...neuroinflammation, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, damaging several brain regions. Vitamin C plays a vital role in preventing oxidative stress-related diseases induced by reactive oxygen species, but it is easily oxidized and loses its antioxidant activity. To overcome this weakness, we have developed a vitamin C/DNA aptamer complex (NXP031) that increases vitamin C's antioxidant efficacy. Aptamers are short single-stranded nucleic acid polymers (DNA or RNA) that can interact with their corresponding target with high affinity. We established an animal model of VaD by permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) in 12 week old Wistar rats. Twelve weeks after BCCAO, we injected NXP031 into the rats intraperitoneally for two weeks at moderate (200 mg/4 mg/kg) and high concentrations (200 mg/20 mg/kg). NXP031 administration alleviates cognitive impairment, microglial activity, and oxidative stress after CCH. NXP031 increased the expression of basal lamina (laminin), endothelial cell (RECA-1, PECAM-1), and pericyte (PDGFRβ); these markers maintain the BBB integrity. We found that NXP031 administration activated the Nrf2-ARE pathway and increased the expression of SOD-1 and GSTO1/2. These results suggest that this new aptamer complex, NXP031, could be a therapeutic intervention in CCH-induced VaD.
The role of passive smoking on cervical carcinogenesis remains controversial. We investigated the association of passive smoking with the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical ...cancer.
The study recruited 1,322 women, aged 18-65 with normal cytology (n = 592), CIN1 (n = 420), CIN2/3 (n = 165), and cervical cancer (n = 145) from 2006 to 2009. This study is a cross-sectional analysis using the baseline data from the Korean human papillomavirus (HPV) cohort study. Detailed information on smoking behaviors and lifestyles were collected using questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs).
Passive smoking was not statistically related to the risk of CINs and cervical cancer. However, passive smoking among non-smokers was associated with higher CIN 1 risk (OR 1.53; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.07-2.18), compared to not passive smoking, after adjusting for demographic factors, lifestyles, and oncogenic-HPV infection status. CIN 1 risk increased with longer time exposed to passive smoking (P for trend <0.0003). Multivariate odds of <2 hours/day of passive smoking and that of ≥2 hours/day of passive smoking were 2.48 (95% CI, 1.49-4.14) and 2.28 (95% CI, 1.21-4.26) for CIN 1, compared to not passive smoking.
This study found that passive smoking among non-smoking women is associated with the risk of CIN 1.
Abstract
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) differentiation into different lineages is precisely controlled by signaling pathways. Given that protein kinases play a crucial role in signal transduction, ...here we show that Microtubule Associated Serine/Threonine Kinase Family Member 4 (Mast4) serves as an important mediator of TGF-β and Wnt signal transduction in regulating chondro-osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Suppression of Mast4 by TGF-β1 led to increased Sox9 stability by blocking Mast4-induced Sox9 serine 494 phosphorylation and subsequent proteasomal degradation, ultimately enhancing chondrogenesis of MSCs. On the other hand, Mast4 protein, which stability was enhanced by Wnt-mediated inhibition of GSK-3β and subsequent Smurf1 recruitment, promoted β-catenin nuclear localization and Runx2 activity, increasing osteogenesis of MSCs.
