Standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) is a fundamental component of fishery stock assessment. In multispecies fisheries, catchability can differ depending on which species is being targeted, and ...so the yearly trend extracted from the standardized CPUE is likely to be biased. We have, therefore, developed a method for predicting the unobserved variable related to targeted species from among multispecies composition data using a mixture regression model for the transformed residuals. In contrast with traditional methods, the proposed method predicts the target variable in CPUE standardization without removing a subset of the data. Keeping the entire data set avoids information loss, and so CPUE standardization with the predicted target variable should yield an unbiased estimate of the yearly trend. Simple simulation tests demonstrate that our method outperforms traditional methods. We illustrate the use of our method by applying it to CPUE data on arabesque greenling (Pleurogrammus azonus) caught in multispecies trawl fisheries in Hokkaido, Japan.
Innate lymphoid cells (ILC) represent a group of lymphocytes that lack specific antigen receptors and are relatively rare as compared to adaptive lymphocytes. ILCs play important roles in allergic ...and nonallergic inflammatory diseases due to their location at barrier surfaces within the airways, gut, and skin, and they respond to cytokines produced by activated cells in their local environment. Innate lymphoid cells contribute to the immune response by the release of cytokines and other mediators, forming a link between innate and adaptive immunity. In recent years, these cells have been extensively characterized and their role in animal models of disease has been investigated. Data to translate the relevance of ILCs in human pathology, and the potential role of ILCs in diagnosis, as biomarkers and/or as future treatment targets are also emerging. This review, produced by a task force of the Immunology Section of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), encompassing clinicians and researchers, highlights the role of ILCs in human allergic and nonallergic diseases in the airways, gastrointestinal tract, and skin, with a focus on new insights into clinical implications, therapeutic options, and future research opportunities.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that potentially confer beneficial outcomes to host by modulating gut microbiota in the intestine. The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate effects ...of probiotics on human intestinal microbiota using 454 pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA genes with an improved quantitative accuracy for evaluation of the bacterial composition. We obtained 158 faecal samples from 18 healthy adult Japanese who were subjected to intervention with 6 commercially available probiotics containing either Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus strains. We then analysed and compared bacterial composition of the faecal samples collected before, during, and after probiotic intervention by Operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and UniFrac distances. The results showed no significant changes in the overall structure of gut microbiota in the samples with and without probiotic administration regardless of groups and types of the probiotics used. We noticed that 32 OTUs (2.7% of all analysed OTUs) assigned to the indigenous species showed a significant increase or decrease of ≥10-fold or a quantity difference in >150 reads on probiotic administration. Such OTUs were found to be individual specific and tend to be unevenly distributed in the subjects. These data, thus, suggest robustness of the gut microbiota composition in healthy adults on probiotic administration.

The root-locus technique is used to study the range of the leading coefficient for which a dynamic property of an (n+1)-th order polynomial remain close to that of the n-th order polynomial. As an example, it is shown that the fifth-order Manabe polynomial leads to the step response that is close to the fourth-order Manabe polynomial for a wide range of leading coefficient values; about 70 to 80% of the stability critical value, beyond which the polynomial becomes unstable.
This work presents our recent progress in the development of an Si wire waveguiding system for microphotonics devices. The Si wire waveguide promises size reduction and high-density integration of ...optical circuits due to its strong light confinement. However, large connection and propagation losses had been serious problems. We solved these problems by using a spot-size converter and improving the microfabrication technology. As a result, propagation losses as low as 2.8 dB/cm for a 400/spl times/200 nm waveguide and a coupling loss of 0.5 dB per connection were obtained. As we have the technologies for the fabrication of complex, practical optical devices using Si wire waveguides, we used them to make microphotonics devices, such as a ring resonator and lattice filter. The devices we made exhibit excellent characteristics because of the microfabrication with the precision of a few nanometers. We have also demonstrated that Si wire waveguides have great potential for use in nonlinear optical devices.
Two terrorist attacks with the nerve agent Sarin affected citizens in Matsumoto and Tokyo, Japan in 1994 and 1995, killing 19 and injuring more the 6000. Sarin, a very potent organophosphate nerve ...agent, inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity within the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. Acute and long-term Sarin effects upon humans were well documented in these two events.
Sarin gas inhalation caused instantaneous death by respiratory arrest in 4 victims in Matsumoto. In Tokyo, two died in station yards and another ten victims died in hospitals within a few hours to 3 months after poisoning.
Six victims with serum ChE below 20% of the lowest normal were resuscitated from cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) or coma with generalized convulsion. Five recovered completely and one remained in vegetative state due to anoxic brain damage. EEG abnormalities persisted for up to 5 years.
Miosis and copious secretions from the respiratory and GI tracts (muscarinic effects) were common in severely to slightly affected victims. Weakness and twitches of muscles (nicotinic effects) appeared in severely affected victims. Neuropathy and ataxia were observed in small number (less than 10%) of victims, which findings disappeared between 3 days and 3 months. Leukocytosis and high serum CK levels were common. Hyperglycemia, ketonuria, low serum triglyceride, hypopotassemia were observed in severely affected victims, which abnormalities were attributed to damage of the adrenal medulla. Oximes, atropine sulphate, diazepam and ample intravenous infusion were effective treatments. Pralidoxime iodide IV reversed cholinesterase and symptoms quickly even if administered 6 h after exposure.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was less than 8% after 5 years. However, psychological symptoms continue in victims of both incidents.
In summary, both potent toxicity and quick recovery from critical ill conditions were prominent features. Conventional therapies proved effective in Sarin incidents in Japan.
The effects of lactobacilli on impaired intestinal barrier function and paracellular permeability were evaluated in human epithelial Caco-2 cells treated with tumor necrosis factor-α and in mice with ...colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). Filter-grown Caco-2 monolayers were used as the intestinal epithelial model. Among the 4 lactobacilli studied, Lactobacillus rhamnosus OLL2838 most effectively suppressed barrier impairment and increased IL-8 secretion induced by tumor necrosis factor-α in Caco-2 cells; however, the conditioned medium from OLL2838 did not show any effect on barrier functions. The in vivo effects of OLL2838 on intestinal epithelial barrier function and colonic inflammation were assessed in DSS-induced colitis of BALB/c mice. Oral treatment with both live and heat-killed OLL2838 suppressed weight loss and recovered colon length. Additionally, barrier function was restored by the administration of live and heat-killed OLL2838 to the DSS-treated animals, which conferred protection against the increase in mucosal permeability associated with DSS-induced colitis. This may at least partially be because of the increased expression of zonula occludens-1 (4.8-fold) and myosin light-chain kinase (3.1-fold) in intestinal epithelial cells isolated from mice of the heat-killed OLL2838 group. Therefore, L. rhamnosus OLL2838 would be useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease.
The atomic structures of magnesium silicate melts are key to understanding processes related to the evolution of the Earth’s mantle and represent precursors to the formation of most igneous rocks. ...Magnesium silicate compositions also represent a major component of many glass ceramics, and depending on their composition can span the entire fragility range of glass formation. The silica rich enstatite (MgSiO3) composition is a good glass former, whereas the forsterite (Mg2SiO4) composition is at the limit of glass formation. Here, the structure of MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 composition glasses obtained from levitated liquids have been modeled using Reverse Monte Carlo fits to diffraction data and by density functional theory. A ring statistics analysis suggests that the lower glass forming ability of the Mg2SiO4 glass is associated with a topologically ordered and very narrow ring distribution. The MgOx polyhedra have a variety of irregular shapes in MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 glasses and a cavity analysis demonstrates that both glasses have almost no free volume due to a large contribution from edge sharing of MgOx-MgOx polyhedra. It is found that while the atomic volume of Mg cations in the glasses increases compared to that of the crystalline phases, the number of Mg-O contacts is reduced, although the effective chemical interaction of Mg2+ remains similar. This unusual structure-property relation of Mg2SiO4 glass demonstrates that by using containerless processing it may be possible to synthesize new families of dense glasses and glass ceramics with zero porosity.
X-ray computed tomography (CT) is widely used in diagnostic imaging. Owing to a strong radiation exposure associated with this method, numerous proposals have been made for reducing the radiation ...dose. In addition, conventional CT does not provide information on the energy associated with each X-ray photon because intensity is rather high, typically amounts to 107−9cps/mm2. Here, we propose a novel, low-dose photon-counting CT system based on a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) and a high-speed scintillator. To demonstrate high signal-to-noise ratio utilizing the internal gain and the fast time response of the MPPC, we compared CT images acquired under the same conditions among a photodiode (PD), an avalanche photodiode and a MPPC. In particular, the images' contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) acquired using the MPPC improved 12.6-fold compared with the images acquired in conventional CT using a PD. We also performed energy-resolved imaging by adopting 4 energy thresholds of 20, 40, 60, and 80keV. We confirmed a substantial improvement of the imaging contrast as well as a reduction in the beam hardening for the CT images. We conclude that the proposed MPPC-based detector is likely to be a promising device for use in future CT scanners.
