nanostructures array grown on LaAlO
substrates via a high deposition flux, induces a polarization of several microcoulomb per square centimetre. It leads to a large built-in electric field of several megavoltage per metre, and gives rise to a large enhancement of solar absorption. Our results indicate that it is possible to build up large-scale strain-dominated nanostructures with exotic properties, which in turn could be useful in the development of novel devices for electromechanical and photoelectric applications.
There has been a long-standing debate about the mechanism of the unusual superconductivity in alkali-intercalated fullerides. In this Letter, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission ...spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of superconducting K_{3}C_{60} thin films. We observe a dispersive energy band crossing the Fermi level with the occupied bandwidth of about 130 meV. The measured band structure shows prominent quasiparticle kinks and a replica band involving the Jahn-Teller active phonon modes, which reflects strong electron-phonon coupling in the system. The electron-phonon coupling constant is estimated to be about 1.2, which dominates the quasiparticle mass renormalization. Moreover, we observe an isotropic nodeless superconducting gap beyond the mean-field estimation (2Δ/k_{B}T_{c}≈5). Both the large electron-phonon coupling constant and large reduced superconducting gap suggest a strong-coupling superconductivity in K_{3}C_{60}, while the electronic correlation effect is suggested by the observation of a waterfall-like band dispersion and the small bandwidth compared with the effective Coulomb interaction. Our results not only directly visualize the crucial band structure but also provide important insights into the mechanism of the unusual superconductivity of fulleride compounds.

Interfaces have been reported to significantly strengthen and toughen metallic materials. However, there has been a long-standing question on whether interface-affected-zone (IAZ) ...exists, and how it might behave. Here we report in situ high-resolution strain mapping near interfaces in a copper–bronze heterogeneous laminate, which revealed the existence of IAZs. Defined as the zone with strain gradient, the IAZ was found to form by the dislocations emitted from the interface. The IAZ width remained largely constant with a magnitude of a few micrometers with increasing applied strain. Interfaces produced both back stress strengthening and work hardening, which led to both higher strength and higher ductility with decreasing interface spacing until adjacent IAZs started to overlap, after which a tradeoff between strength and ductility occurred, indicating the existence of an optimum interface spacing for the best mechanical properties. These findings are expected to help with designing laminates and other heterogeneous metals and alloys for superior mechanical properties.

Previous results from our trial showed that adding oxaliplatin to radiotherapy (RT) increased survival in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at 2 years. Here, we ...present the data of long-term efficacy and late toxic effects.
Between January 2001 and January 2003, 115 Patients with nonkeratinizing/undifferentiated locoregionally advanced NPC were randomly to receive either RT alone (n = 56) or plus concurrent oxaliplatin 70 mg/m2 weekly for six cycles (n = 59).
After a median follow-up of 114 months (range 18–139 months), the 5-year overall survival (OS) and metastasis-free survival (MFS) rates in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) group were significantly higher than those observed in the RT-alone group (OS, 73.2% versus 60.2%, P = 0.028; MFS, 74.7% versus 63.0%, P = 0.027). However, CCRT did not improve locoregional failure-free survival significantly. Subgroup analyses showed that the superiorities of CCRT mainly existed in the T3-4N0-1 stage subgroup (OS: HR = 0.394, P = 0.034). The grade 3/4 late toxic effects were similar in the two groups.
The long-term follow-up data confirms the role of CCRT as a treatment of locoregionally advanced NPC. Oxaliplatin can be considered as an alternative optional therapeutic regimen for these patients due to its high efficiency and low toxic effect.

A systematic hydrothermal pretreatment of bamboo chips had been conducted with an aim to trace the cellulose degradation. The results showed that cellulose chain cleavage basically occurred when the temperature exceeded 150°C. A slightly higher DP (degree of polymerization) than starting material had been observed at low temperature pretreatment. Treatment at higher temperature (⩾170°C) caused severe cleavage of cellulose and therefore gave rise to low DP with more soluble species. DP of cellulose declined drastically without additional hemicelluloses dissolution when hemicelluloses removal reached to the limit level. Cellulose degradation under hydrothermal pretreatment generally followed the zero reaction kinetics with the activity energy of 121.0kJ/mol. Besides, the increase of cellulose crystalline index and the conversion of Iα–Iβ had also observed at the hydrothermal pretreatment.

The results show that the crystal structure determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction is consistent with the molecular structure after DFT optimization. In addition, in order to reveal the molecular structural features, molecular conformation and some special physicochemical properties of the title compound, the molecular electrostatic potential and frontier molecular orbital of the title compound were further studied by using density functional theory.
Using 2.93 fb −1 of e+e− collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions of 14 hadronic ...D0(+) decays to exclusive final states with an η , e.g., D0 → K−π+η , K0Sπ0η , K+K−η , K0SK0Sη, K−π+π0η , K0Sπ+π−η , K0Sπ0π0η , and π+π−π0η ; D+ → K0Sπ+η,K0SK+η, K−π+π+η, K0Sπ+π0η, π+π+π−η , and π+π0π0η. Among these decays, the D0 → K−π+η and D+→K0Sπ+η decays have the largest branching fractions, which are B (D0 → K−π+η) = ( 1.853 ± 0.02 5 stat ± 0.03 1 syst ) % and B ( D+ → K0Sπ+η ) = ( 1.309 ± 0.03 7 stat ± 0.03 1 syst ) % , respectively. The charge-parity asymmetries for the six decays with highest event yields are determined, and no statistically significant charge-parity violation is found.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world. It has been shown that BZD use could be associated with increased fracture risk. However, studies on the ...use of BZDs and fracture risk have yielded inconsistent results. Results from the present meta-analysis show that BZD use is associated with a moderate and clinically significant increase in the risk of fractures.
Introduction
The relationship between the use of BZDs and fracture risk has been neither well identified nor summarized. This meta-analysis reports on the use of BZDs, especially short-acting BZDs, and their correlation with a moderate and clinically significant increase in fracture risk. This analysis will provide evidence for clinicians to consider fracture risk when prescribing BZDs among the elderly population. This study was conducted to determine whether people who take BZDs are at an increased fracture risk.
Methods
A systematic search of studies published through January 2013 was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, OVID, and ScienceDirect. Case–control and cohort studies that assessed the relationship between BZD use and the risk of fractures were identified. Literature searches, study selections, methodological assessments, and data mining were independently conducted by two reviewers. Disagreements were resolved by consensus. STATA 12.0 software was used for the meta-analysis. Random effects models were used for pooled analysis due to heterogeneity among the studies.
Results
There were 25 studies, including 19 case–control studies and 6 cohort studies, that met the inclusion criteria. Overall, the results of the meta-analysis indicated that BZD use was associated with a significantly increased fracture risk (relative risk (RR) = 1.25; 95 % confidence intervals (CI), 1.17–1.34;
p
< 0.001). Increased fracture risk associated with BZD use was observed in participants aged ≥65 years old (RR = 1.26; 95 % CI, 1.15–1.38;
p
< 0.001). When only hip fractures were included as the outcome measure, the RR increased to 1.35. However, subgroup meta-analyses showed that there was no significant association between BZD use and fracture risk in Eastern countries (RR = 1.27; 95 % CI, 0.76–2.14;
p
= 0.362) as well as between long-acting BZD use and risk of fractures (RR = 1.21; 95 % CI, 0.95–1.54;
p
= 0.12). After accounting for publication bias, we observed that the overall association between BZD use and fracture risk to be slightly weaker (RR = 1.21; 95 % CI, 1.13–1.30) but still significant.
Conclusion
The results of this meta-analysis demonstrate that the use of BZD, especially short-acting BZD, is associated with a moderate and clinically significant increase in fracture risk. However, large prospective studies that minimize selection bias are necessary to determine a more accurate fracture risk associated with BZD use.
