The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) operates in the beamline of the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Batavia, IL. The Tevatron is expected to undergo luminosity upgrades (Run IIb) in the ...future, resulting in a higher number of interactions per beam crossing. To operate in this dense radiation environment, an upgrade of the CDF's silicon vertex detector subsystem and a corresponding upgrade of its VME-based DAQ system has been explored. Prototypes of all the Run IIb SVX DAQ components have been constructed, assembled into a test stand, and operated successfully using an adapted version of the CDF's network-capable DAQ software. In addition, a PCI-based DAQ system has been developed as a fast and inexpensive tool for silicon detector and DAQ component testing in the production phase. We present an overview of the Run IIb silicon DAQ upgrade, emphasizing the new features and improvements incorporated into the constituent VME boards and discuss a PCI-based DAQ system developed to facilitate production tests.
Fosfat-volframove bronze, dobijene termickim tretmanom, su nedovoljno ispitane bronze i o njihovom ponaanju i strukturi malo se zna. Brigs-Rauer (Briggs-Rauscher, BR) oscilatorna reakcija se zbog ...svoje izrazite osetljivosti na prisustvo aditiva namece kao jedna od mogucih metoda za dobijanje neophodnih informacija o osobinama ovih bronzi. U ovom radu, ispitan je uticaj fosfat-volframove (PWB) i fosfat-volframove bronze dopirane litijumom (LiPWB) na dinamiku oscilatorne BR reakcije. Prisustvo volframovih bronzi znacajno smanjuje duinu oscilatornog perioda BR reakcije. Dobijeni rezultati pokazuju da PWB ima jaci uticaj na duinu oscilatornog perioda u odnosu na LiPWB. U oba slucaja, oscilatorni period je linearna funkcija mase dodate bronze. Dobijena linearna zavisnost se moe uspeno koristiti kao kalibraciona kriva za odredivanje kako nepoznate mase bronze, ali i kao potencijalni sistemdetektor za dopirane i nedopirane fosfat-volframove bronze, s obzirom na razliciti nagib koje ove dve kalibracione krive poseduju. Rezultati opticke emisione spektrometrije sa indukovano spregnutom plazmom (ICP-OES) pokazuju da je jaka oksidaciona sredina naruila strukturu fosfat-volframovih bronzi, s obzirom na prisustvo litijuma i volframa u rastvoru. U skladu sa tim, predloeni mehanizam dejstva bronzi najverovatnije je gradenje volframperokso kompleksa pri cemu dolazi do menjanja ukupne kinetike BR reakcije. Phosphate tungsten bronzes, obtained by thermal treatment, are insufficiently investigated bronzes and there is scarce literature data on their chemical behavior and structure. Due to high-sensitivity of the Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reaction to addition of different analytes, this oscillatory reaction presents a potentially important chemical system for investigation and characterization of phosphate-tungsten bronzes, doped and undoped. The reaction mixture for the oscillatory BR reaction typically consists of H.sub.2O.sub.2, HClO.sub.4, KIO.sub.3, Mn(II) (catalyst), and CH.sub.2(COOH).sub.2 (malonic acid, as an organic substrate). This paper deals with phosphate tungsten bronzes (PWB) and lithium doped phosphate tungsten bronzes (LiPWB) and their effects on the Briggs-Rauscher reaction dynamics. It is shown that the addition of phosphate tungsten bronzes decreases the oscillatory period length in this reaction. Furthermore, the obtained results show that PWB has a stronger influence on the BR reaction dynamics then LiPWB. In both cases, the oscillatory period is a linear function of the added bronze mass. The obtained linear functions can be successfully used for determination of the unknown bronze mass. Furthermore, due to different slopes of these functions, the Briggs-Rauscher reaction can be used as a system-detector for lithium doped and undoped phosphate tungsten bronzes. In order to elucidate the mechanism of bronze action, the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to measure the total contents of K, Mn, W, Li. The aliquots of the above solution (i.e. CH.sub.2(COOH).sub.2, MnSO.sub.4, HClO.sub.4, KIO.sub.3 but without H.sub.2O.sub.2) with the identical masses of PWB and LiPWB were examined. For the sake of comparison, contents of the metals in the solution without the bronze addition were measured, as well. Results obtained by the ICP-OES analysis show that the bronze structure is disturbed in the strong oxidizing environment (iodate in acidic solution) so that both, tungsten and lithium, leach into the BR solution. Accordingly, the proposed mechanism of the bronze action is probably by the reaction of tungsten ion with hydrogen-peroxide resulting in formation of a tungsten-peroxo complex. This complex is a stronger oxidizing agent then hydrogen peroxide itself. Thus, formation of the tungsten-peroxo complex potentially affects the kinetics of the Briggs-Rauscher reaction. The intermittency or intermittent bursting as the type of dynamic state when two qualitatively different behaviors replace one another randomly during the course of the reaction, although all the ...control parameters remain constant, is found in the BriggsRauscher oscillating system moderated by a very small amount of phenol. Within a range of phenol concentrations, the oscillation amplitude is diminished considerably, and after oscillations cease, they repeat intermittently, giving several bursts of oscillations. For the concentrations used here, the range of phenol concentrations where intermittent bursting oscillations occur in a closed reactor is ca. 1.8×10−5 to 3.6×10−5 M. Bursting also occurs in an open reactor and can be sustained indefinitely at 5.53×10−5 M concentration. The intermittent bursting behavior is robust, and can be achieved at a variety of conditions.

We present recent results from the CDF experiment, based on the data taken between 1992 and 1995 (Tevatron Run I). We classify the results according to the need to know the initial flavor of the B ...meson. Of the analyses that do not require this knowledge, we focus on the measurements of cross-sections, lifetimes, and polarizations. Simple and reliable novel methods for the determination of uric acid (UA) are proposed and validated. For quantitative determination of UA, two matrices were used: the Bray-Liebhafsky (BL) ...oscillatory reaction in a stable non-equilibrium stationary state close to the bifurcation point (method A) as well as, the BL non-oscillating subsystem (mixture KIO3 and H2SO4), i.e., Dushman reaction (DR) in a steady state (method B). The proposed methods are optimized in a continuously fed well stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and applied with excellent results in the determination of UA in human urine samples. The linear relationship between maximal potential shift ΔEm, and both the logarithm of the UA concentration (procedure A) and UA concentration (procedure B) is obtained in the concentration range 2.98 × 10- 5-2.68 × 10- 4 mol L- 1 and 2.98 × 10- 5-3.58 × 10- 4 mol L- 1, respectively. The methods have an excellent sample throughput of 30 samples h- 1 (method A) and 7 samples h- 1 (method B) with the sensitivity determined to be 1.1 × 10- 5 mol L- 1 (method A) and 8.9 × 10- 6 mol L- 1 (method B) as well as the precision RSD < 3.4% for both methods. Some aspects of the possible mechanism of UA action on the BL oscillating and Duschman non-oscillating reaction systems are discussed in detail.
A novel procedure for kinetic determination of some water-soluble vitamins of the B-group (thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3) and pyridoxine (B6)) by the concentration perturbations of the ...Bray-Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory chemical system involving the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of both hydrogen and iodate ions is proposed and validated. The method uses a Pt electrode for potentiometric monitoring of the concentration perturbations of the BL matrix in a stable non-equilibrium stationary state close to the bifurcation point. The proposed method relies on the linear relationship between maximal potential displacements, ΔEm, caused by the additional known quantities of a B species. Under the optimal established analytical conditions, linear calibration curves were obtained over the range of 0.01-1.0, 0.016-0.128, 5.0-50.0 and 0.05-2.5 μmol with the limits of detection of 0.01, 0.018, 2.6 and 0.03 μmol, as well as analytical throughput of 30, 5, 12 and 20 determinations per hour, for B1, B2, B3 and B6, respectively. The used technical approach also provides simple, effective and convenient method to assay the pharmaceutical formulations containing B1 together with other active principles such as nicotinamide and vitamin B12 as well as B3.
