Global challenges, including climate change, land and ecosystem degradation, and a growing population have direct or indirect impact on natural resources and are forcing people to seek new ways of ...production and consumption that respect the ecological limits of our planet. To meet the challenges, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by 193 countries at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. The forest-wood chain has also been identified as closely linked to sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Especially in countries with high forest cover, such as Slovenia, forest-wood chain is recognized in policy documents as key element for achieving the SDGs. The importance of the SDGs is not only recognized in national legislation, but also in relation to higher education and research institutions. With the aim to investigate how well higher education teachers and students are familiar with SDGs and whether they consider them important for the forestry and wood industry and if high education teachers and researchers integrate the SDGs into educational programs and research, survey was conducted with the employees (n=61) and students (n=185) of the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Forestry and Renewable Forest Resources and Department of Wood Science and Technology. The results show that both employees and students of the Department of Forestry and Renewable Forest Resources as well as employees and students of the Department of Wood Science are familiar with SDGs. All the respondents find SDGs important for the forestry and wood industry. All the participants especially emphasized SDG 15 - Life on land. The results also showed that, in the future, employees of both departments plan to integrate more SDGs into their educational and research process. Finally, it was concluded that educational and research institutions and integration of SDGs into their educational and research process could be an important step towards sustainability and achieving goals of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Students who will work in the forestry and wood industry sectors in the future could integrate and promote more sustainable practises in the sectors if they have sufficient knowledge of the SDGs and high perception of sustainability.
Agendu održivog razvoja do 2030.

The work analyses the optimisation of the manufacturing process of an artistic wooden product (mirror frame) with a 3-axis CNC machine. The 3D model was first made in ArtCAM, from where the STL file ...was later uploaded to SolidWorks. The parameters for the HSR (high-speed roughing), and HSM (high-speed machining) operations were determined in SolidCAM. The findings show that a combination of operations from HSR and HSM are the best choice, considering the shape of the model and the capabilities of the machine, as the best ratio between the quality of the surface and the time needed for the operation is provided by these. Operations differ with regard to the tool path and parameters that can be adjusted. The operations were compared and the best results are achieved when the HSR operations “Contour Roughing” and then “Rest Roughing” are used and when the HSM operation “3D Constant Step Over” is used, where the machining time amounted 4 hours and 1 minute. Finally the G code was made for our product.

A study was conducted on the waste of disposable surgical masks and their problematic impact on the environment. The studies examined have shown the negative effects on the environment that are ...likely to occur and those that have already occurred. In this article, society's relationship to the potential recycling of disposable surgical masks is considered and projected onto the possibilities of the cradle-to-cradle design approach. The development of a product from recycled surgical masks is driven by two different surveys. The first focuses on wear and disposal habits, and the second on the relationship to recycling. As a result, the flooring was developed with thermally treated recycled surgical masks replacing the filler layer. The goal of the product design was to improve the long-term life cycle analysis of a waste surgical mask.

Increasing the concentration of an element in edible produce (i.e., biofortification) can mitigate the element deficiency in humans. Sprouts are small but popular part of healthy diets providing ...vitamins and essential elements throughout the year. Element composition of sprouts can easily be amended, e.g., by soaking the grains in element-rich solution before germination (grain-priming). In addition, pre-treatment of grains to improve element translocation from the solution into the grain may further enhance the element concentration in the sprout. Cold plasma technique could provide such solution, as it increases wettability and water uptake of grains. Grains of common buckwheat (
Moench) were pre-treated/ untreated with cold plasma and soaked in ZnCl
solution/pure water. Germination tests, α-amylase activity, grain hydrophilic properties and water uptake were assessed. Element composition of grain tissues and of sprouts was assessed by micro-particle-induced-X-ray emission and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Grain-priming increased Zn concentration in shoots of common buckwheat sprouts more than five-times, namely from 79 to 423 mg Zn kg
dry weight. Cold plasma treatment increased grain wettability and water uptake into the grain. However, cold plasma pre-treatment followed by grain-priming with ZnCl
did not increase Zn concentration in different grain tissues or in the sprouts more than the priming alone, but rather decreased the Zn concentration in sprout shoots (average ± standard error: 216 ± 6.13 and 174 ± 7.57 mg Zn kg
dry weight, respectively). When the fresh weight portion of whole sprouts (i.e., of roots and shoots) was considered, comparable average requirements of Zn, namely 24.5 % and 35 % for adult men and women would be satisfied by consuming cold plasma pre-treated and not pre-treated grains. Potential advantages of cold plasma pre-treatment need to be tested further, mainly to optimize the duration of soaking required to produce Zn-enriched sprouts.
