A total of 33 participants who received both doses of the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 had blood drawn over a period of 6 months after vaccination. SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing activity ...was maintained in all the patients through the entire period of follow-up. A half-life of 202 days was determined for the live-virus neutralization activity.
Participants who had been fully vaccinated with current Covid-19 vaccines received homologous or heterologous boosters, and their immune response was measured on days 15 and 29. Homologous boosters ...increased neutralizing antibody titers by a factor of 4 to 20, whereas heterologous boosters increased titers by a factor of 6 to 73.
The Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine, which elicited antibodies and T cells specific for the Covid-19 virus in adults 55 years of age or younger, elicited similarly high levels of neutralizing-antibody and ...CD4 T-cell responses in a small group of older adults, including those 71 years of age or older.
Two inoculations with a new SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-based vaccine that encodes a protein in the coronavirus spike elicited high titers of virus-neutralizing antibody in healthy adult volunteers. ...Virus-specific T-cell responses were also elicited. Interim findings indicated that a dose of 100 μg per injection maximized immune response and minimized the reactogenicity of the vaccine.
Abstract Alterations in the biomechanical properties and cytoskeletal organization of cancer cells in addition to genetic changes have been correlated with their aggressive phenotype. In this study, ...we investigated changes in the viscoelasticity of mouse ovarian surface epithelial (MOSE) cells, a mouse model for progressive ovarian cancer. We demonstrate that the elasticity of late-stage MOSE cells (0.549 ± 0.281 kPa) were significantly less than that of their early-stage counterparts (1.097 ± 0.632 kPa). Apparent cell viscosity also decreased significantly from early (144.7 ± 102.4 Pa-s) to late stage (50.74 ± 29.72 Pa-s). This indicates that ovarian cells are stiffer and more viscous when they are benign. The increase in cell deformability directly correlates with the progression of a transformed phenotype from a nontumorigenic, benign cell to a tumorigenic, malignant one. The decrease in the level of actin in the cytoskeleton and its organization is directly associated with the changes in cell biomechanical property. From the Clinical Editor The authors have investigated changes in the viscoelasticity of mouse ovarian surface epithelial (MOSE) cells and demonstrated that ovarian cells are stiffer and more viscous when they are benign.
Thirty-four adults received two 100-μg injections of Moderna’s mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and serum anti–spike protein and neutralizing antibody titers were measured at day 119 — 90 days after the ...second injection. By three different assays, binding and neutralizing antibody titers declined slightly but remained elevated and higher than titers in convalescent plasma.
A priority for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is development of a universal influenza vaccine providing durable protection against multiple influenza strains. NIAID will ...use this strategic plan as a foundation for future investments in influenza research.

The highest densities of lakes on Earth are in north temperate ecosystems, where increasing urbanization and associated chloride runoff can salinize freshwaters and threaten lake water quality and ...the many ecosystem services lakes provide. However, the extent to which lake salinity may be changing at broad spatial scales remains unknown, leading us to first identify spatial patterns and then investigate the drivers of these patterns. Significant decadal trends in lake salinization were identified using a dataset of long-term chloride concentrations from 371 North American lakes. Landscape and climate metrics calculated for each site demonstrated that impervious land cover was a strong predictor of chloride trends in Northeast and Midwest North American lakes. As little as 1% impervious land cover surrounding a lake increased the likelihood of long-term salinization. Considering that 27% of large lakes in the United States have >1% impervious land cover around their perimeters, the potential for steady and long-term salinization of these aquatic systems is high. This study predicts that many lakes will exceed the aquatic life threshold criterion for chronic chloride exposure (230 mg L−1), stipulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the next 50 y if current trends continue.
Neutralization of the omicron variant was assessed in serum samples obtained from persons who had received an mRNA-1273 booster. After the standard two-dose vaccine regimen, these titers were ...approximately 35 times lower than those against the D614G variant. However, boosters increased omicron neutralization by a factor of 20 — to levels that correlate with clinical resistance to infection.
