The binding ability of five bifunctional 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones towards Cu
and Fe
was studied by means of potentiometric and UV-Vis spectrophotometric measurements carried out at
= 0.15 mol L
in ...NaCl
= 298.15 K and 310.15 K. The data treatments allowed us to determine speciation schemes featured by metal-ligand species with different stoichiometry and stability, owing to the various functional groups present in the 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones structures, which could potentially participate in the metal complexation, and in the Cu
and Fe
behaviour in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the sequestering ability and metal chelating affinity of the ligands were investigated by the determination of p
and pM parameters at different pH conditions. Finally, a comparison between the Cu
and Fe
/3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones data herein presented with those already reported in the literature on the interaction of Zn
and Al
with the same ligands showed that, from the thermodynamic point of view, the 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones are particularly selective towards Fe
and could therefore be considered promising iron-chelating agents, also avoiding the possibility of competition, and eventually the depletion, of essential metal cations of biological and environmental relevance, such as Cu
and Zn
.
Objective: To map the scientific production on educational strategies and the content covered in the education of people living with HIV. Methods: This is a scoping review in which the selection of ...articles was carried out in April 2021 and updated in October 2022 in ten data sources; the review followed the assumptions established by the Joanna Briggs Institute and the checklist of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The results were descriptively analyzed and summarized in a chart. Results: A total of 17 studies were selected, predominantly published in 2017; The USA and Brazil were the countries with the largest number of productions. Most studies sought to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of strategies and develop or validate health education instruments and prevention activities. Concerning the content covered by the strategies, five categories were formed: initial guidance on HIV/AIDS, general care, healthy living, sexual health, and emotional support. The educational strategies that stood out concerning greater patient adherence to treatment are related to the development of systems, programs, and multimedia. The booklets promoted empowerment and autonomy for people living with HIV. Conclusion: The main educational strategies were mapped, with emphasis on booklets, printed material, multimedia resources, systems, forms, and workshops, covering initial guidance on HIV/AIDS, pharmacological treatment, general care, healthy living, sexual health, and social and emotional support.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with high mortality among hospitalized patients and incurs high costs. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection can trigger both ...inflammatory and thrombotic processes, and these complications can lead to a poorer prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the association and temporal trends of D-dimer and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels with the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), hospital mortality, and costs among inpatients with COVID-19.
Data were extracted from electronic patient records and laboratory databases. Crude and adjusted associations for age, sex, number of comorbidities, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score at admission, and D-dimer or CRP logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations.
Between March and June 2020, COVID-19 was documented in 3,254 inpatients. The D-dimer level ≥4,000 ng/mL fibrinogen equivalent unit (FEU) mortality odds ratio (OR) was 4.48 (adjusted OR: 1.97). The CRP level ≥220 mg/dL OR for death was 7.73 (adjusted OR: 3.93). The D-dimer level ≥4,000 ng/mL FEU VTE OR was 3.96 (adjusted OR: 3.26). The CRP level ≥220 mg/dL OR for VTE was 2.71 (adjusted OR: 1.92). All these analyses were statistically significant (p<0.001). Stratified hospital costs demonstrated a dose-response pattern. Adjusted D-dimer and CRP levels were associated with higher mortality and doubled hospital costs. In the first week, elevated D-dimer levels predicted VTE occurrence and systemic inflammatory harm, while CRP was a hospital mortality predictor.
D-dimer and CRP levels were associated with higher hospital mortality and a higher incidence of VTE. D-dimer was more strongly associated with VTE, although its discriminative ability was poor, while CRP was a stronger predictor of hospital mortality. Their use outside the usual indications should not be modified and should be discouraged.
In 2004, a global spread of Chikungunya fever affected most tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In 2016, an outbreak occurred in Northeast Brazil with hundreds of cases documented. Solid ...organ transplant recipients have a modified immune response to infection and the clinical course is usually different from immunocompetent patients. The diagnosis can be challenging in this population. Most reports describe patients residing in endemic areas, although we must emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis in kidney transplanted travelers who visit endemic regions, such as Northeast Brazil. Here, we reported a case of a kidney transplant recipient that acquired Chikungunya fever after a trip to an endemic region at Northeast Brazil during the outbreak in 2016, with a good clinical evolution. We also present warning recommendations for travelers to endemic areas as additional measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
•Santolina semidentata is an endemism from the Iberian Peninsula not yet described for its medicinal properties.•Chemical characterization and detection of bioactive compounds of S. ...semidentata.•Source of natural compounds with AChE inhibitory activity.•Neuroprotective effect of polyphenol enriched fraction on a human cell model.•In vitro propagation and seed collection was successfully achieved.
Asteraceae family members are well-known for their medicinal potential, comprising several properties that make them unique among plants. Here we focus on Santolina semidentata, an endemic plant from the Iberian Peninsula, not yet described for its medicinal properties. Phytochemical characterization of S. semidentata was performed, concerning total phenol content, flavonoid content, antioxidant capacity, HPLC-DAD profile, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory capacity, cytotoxicity and neuroprotective effect in a human neurodegeneration cell model. Moreover, essential oil composition and antifungal activity were also analised. This oil might be useful for therapeutical purposes, particularly in the treatment of dermatophytosis. S. semidentata potential for neuroprotection was revealed by acetylcholinesterase inhibitory capacity and also by an effective protective effect in human neuronal cells. Furthermore, different seed conservation protocols, as well as successful in vitro propagation were established which may be useful when integrated in a broad strategy for the conservation of these endemic plants and their sustainable use for potential biotechnological applications. The results presented here greatly contribute to value this species regarding its potential as a source of phytochemicals with prospective neuroprotective health benefits, either as alternative neuroprotective drugs or as leads for synthetizing more effective molecules.
This article is a report from an experience about a work developed by Farmácia Universitária at UFRJ (FU-UFRJ) during the nCov-19 pandemic period. The aim of this work was to describe its ...contribution in the production of antiseptic supplies used to prevent contagion by the new coronavirus. The work routine at the pharmacy has been changed to allow the implementation of local workflow during the pandemic, and to adapt the protection rules to meet the safety measures. FU-UFRJ started to manipulate two antiseptic formulations: 70% ethyl alcohol and gel alcohol, which are included in the National Form, manufacturing around 100 L of these formulations, weekly, to donate to different health units. The experience enabled the adaptation to emergency health standards, planning and meaningful guidance to pharmacists and technicians to attend clinics at university hospitals, vaccination center and UFRJ city hall, in order to facilitate the access to adequate hand hygiene to the population.
Two new adjacent bis-THF annonaceous acetogenins, 9-hydroxyfolianin (1) and folianin B (2), together with two known acetogenins, asimicin (3) and bullatacin (4), significantly bioactives in brine ...shrimp lethality test, were isolated from seeds of Annona cornifolia A. St. Hil (Annonaceae). Their structures were elucidated by NMR and ESI-MS analysis, and relative configurations were established. The absolute configuration around the THF rings of 1 was defined by Mosher esters methodology and circular dichroism.
The present work addresses the synthesis of nanofiltration composite membranes with bactericide properties. The cellulose acetate based membranes with polyvinylpyrrolidone coated silver ...nanoparticles, silver ion-exchanged β-zeolite and β-zeolite are casted by the phase inversion technique and subjected to an annealing post-treatment. They are characterized in terms of the nanofiltration permeation performance and antibacterial properties.
The incorporation of silver nanoparticles produces a threefold increase in the membrane hydraulic permeability when compared to the silver-free membranes and the incorporation of silver ion loaded zeolite resulted in a 56.3% increase in hydraulic permeability. In contrast to the influence of silver presence, either in nanometric or in the ionic form, the presence of zeolite does not significantly influence the hydraulic permeability. The rejection coefficients to salts range from 83% to 93% for the silver ion-exchanged zeolite membrane and from 84% to 97% for the polyvinylpyrrolidone coated silver nanoparticles membrane. They are higher for sulfate salts than for chloride salts.
The antibacterial properties of the membranes were evaluated against Escherichia coli. The results have shown that the silver ion-exchanged β-zeolite membrane was effective in inactivating Escherichia coli after just 210 min of contact time. No bacterial activity was detected following 24 h of contact time with the membrane containing polyvinylpyrrolidone coated silver nanoparticles. A reduction of more than 6-log, in the number of Escherichia coli, was achieved for both membranes. The different patterns of bactericide activity are associated to the silver speciation in metallic or ionic form.
The high flux nanofiltration composite membranes with bactericidal properties represent a strong asset in water treatment biofouling control.

The recent outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) disease caused an enormous number of infections in Central and South America, and the unusual increase in the number of infants born with microcephaly ...associated with ZIKV infection aroused global concern. Here, we developed a reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay using a portable device for the detection of ZIKV. The assay specifically detected ZIKV strains of both Asian and African genotypes without cross-reactivity with other arboviruses, including Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. The assay detected viral RNA at 14.5 TCID
/mL in virus-spiked serum or urine samples within 15 min, although it was slightly less sensitive than reference real time RT-PCR assay. We then evaluated the utility of this assay as a molecular diagnostic test using 90 plasma or serum samples and 99 urine samples collected from 120 suspected cases of arbovirus infection in the states of Paraíba and Pernambuco, Brazil in 2016. The results of this assay were consistent with those of the reference RT-PCR test. This portable RT-LAMP assay was highly specific for ZIKV, and enable rapid diagnosis of the virus infection. Our results provide new insights into ZIKV molecular diagnostics and may improve preparedness for future outbreaks.
