This work aims to use wax to modify a binder employed in the paving industry. This wax can be obtained either directly or as a by-product from plastic waste′s thermal cracking (pyrolysis). The study ...characterizes this sustainable material and the binders resulting from blending it with conventional or modified bitumen with other additives applied in the manufacture of bituminous mixtures. Different tests were used: thermogravimetric and spectroscopic analysis; consistency tests; testing of dynamic viscosity at various temperatures; and assessment of the rheologic properties of binders. As a result, several crucial findings were reached: this sustainable wax promotes changes in the viscosity of the binders, their handling temperatures can be reduced, and it contributes to some goals of the U.N. 2030 Agenda. In summary, this work allowed us to conclude that the positive effects of a suitable modification of the bituminous binders, which incorporated this wax and other additives, led to improved consistency and rheological behaviour, having provided, for example, lower temperature susceptibility and higher permanent deformation resistance.
Abstract: HIV prevalence among transgender women is disproportional when compared to the general population in various countries. Stigma and discrimination based on gender identity have frequently been associated with vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. The objective was to conduct a systematic literature review to analyze the relationship between stigma and discrimination related to gender identity in transgender women and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. This systematic literature review involved the stages of identification, compilation, analysis, and interpretation of results of studies found in five databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and LILACS. No publication time period was determined in advance for this review. The studies were assessed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review included articles in English, Portuguese, or Spanish that related stigma and discrimination to transgender women’s vulnerability to HIV. We found 41 studies, mostly qualitative, published from 2004 to 2018, and categorized in three dimensions of stigma: individual, interpersonal, and structural. The data highlighted that the effects of stigma related to gender identity, such as violence, discrimination, and transphobia, are structuring elements in transgender women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. The studies showed a relationship between stigma and discrimination and transgender women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and indicated the need for public policies to fight discrimination in society.

Plague, in the Middle Ages known as Black Death, continues to occur at permanent foci in many countries, in Africa, Asia, South America, and even the USA. During the last years outbreaks were ...reported from at least 3 geographical areas, in all cases after tens of years without reported cases. The recent human plague outbreaks in Libya and Algeria suggest that climatic and other environmental changes in Northern Africa may be favourable for Y. pestis epidemiologic cycle. If so, other Northern Africa countries with plague foci also may be at risk for outbreaks in the near future. It is important to remember that the danger of plague reoccurrence is not limited to the known natural foci, for example, those of Algeria, Angola, and Madagascar. In a general context, it is important that governments know the dangerous impact that this disease may have and that the health and medical community be familiar with the epidemiology, symptoms, treatment, and control of plague, so an appropriated and timely response can be delivered should the worst case happen. Plague can be used as a potential agent of bioterrorism. We have concluded that plague is without a doubt a reemerging infectious disease.
•The rs11030099 of brain-derived neurotrophic factor neurotrophin is associated with nerve damage in leprosy patients.•The rs11030099 is not associated with brain-derived neurotrophic factor serum ...level.•The rs11030099 is located in a miR-26a binding region.•The miR-26 and rs11030099 may be acting synergistically.•Other investigated single nucleotide polymorphisms of neurotrophins are not associated with leprosy phenotypes.
Mycobacterium leprae is able to infect Schwann cells leading to neural damage. Neurotrophins are involved in nervous system plasticity and impact neural integrity during diseases. Investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms in neurotrophin genes and leprosy phenotypes, especially neural damage.
We selected single nucleotide polymorphisms in neurotrophins or their receptors genes associated with neural disorders: rs6265 and rs11030099 of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), rs6330 of BDNF, rs6332 in NT3 and rs2072446 of P75NTR. The association of genetic frequencies with leprosy phenotypes was investigated in a case-control study.
An association of the BDNF single nucleotide polymorphism rs11030099 with the number of affected nerves was demonstrated. The “AA+AC” genotypes were demonstrated to be protective against nerve impairment. However, this variation does not affect BDNF serum levels. BDNF is an important factor for myelination of Schwann cells and polymorphisms in this gene can be associated with leprosy outcome. Moreover, rs11030099 is located in the binding region for micro-RNA (miRNA) 26a that could be involved in control of BDNF expression. We demonstrated different expression levels of this miRNA in polar forms of leprosy.
Our findings demonstrate for the first time an association between the polymorphism rs11030099 in the BDNF gene and neural commitment in leprosy and may indicate a possible role of miRNA-26a acting synergistically to these genetic variants in neural damage development.
Significant crop losses are due to plant-parasitic nematodes. Nematicides are expensive and potentially toxic to men, the environment, and plants. This study evaluated the hidden phytotoxicity ...effects of nematicides in soybeans. Two soybean cultivars (8473RSF and M7198IPRO) were evaluated with five nematicide treatments (biological, cadusaphos, abamectin, fluensulfone, and an untreated control) for changes in chlorophylls, biometrics, and spectral (TGI visible spectral index captured with a smartphone camera) variables to determine and anticipate the identification of plant stresses. Evaluations occurred 33, 47, and 66 days after sowing (DAS). The a/b chlorophyll proportion was greatest for M7198IPRO and cadusaphos. The chlorophyll variables did not present significant interactions or differences at 47 DAS, indicating that possible nematicide effects were transient and should be evaluated earlier than 33 DAS. Leaf area, leaf mass, and shoot mass were smaller for 8473RSF and outstanding for abamectin and fluensulfone. The response of the spectral index did not present significant interaction among the factors; however, at 33 and 47 DAS, the index was low for 8473RSF and lowest for cadusaphos only at 33 DAS. The correlations between the spectral index and other variables were significant and moderate for soybean total leaf area. Although no apparent phytotoxicity symptoms caused by nematicides were observed, the visible vegetation index generated using a smartphone camera can still improve crop management solutions.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection affects the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, and transsexual (LGBT) population. We aimed to identify the indidual vulnerability profile of the LGBT ...population ling with H/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and correlate it with the treatment situation.
This cross-sectional study included 510 LGBT people living with HIV (PLHIV)/AIDS who attended the Complex of Chronic Communicable Diseases of the municipality of São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, between 2008 and 2015.
There was a predominance of indiduals who were white (70.2%), male (98.4%), single (87.1%), aged 25-44 years (70.0%), educated up to high school (47.7%), economically acte (91.2%), under treatment (80.8%), having CD4 > 350 cells/mm3 (77.1%), and having undetectable viral load (53.3%). HIV transmission was mainly sexual (97.0%) and most people used drugs (76.5%). There was a weak correlation between the variables 'in treatment' and acte occupation (r = 0.148, p = 0.001), single marital status (r = 0.128, p = 0.004), white race/colour (r = 0.117, p = 0.008), high school education (r = 0.111, p = 0.012), sexual transmission (r = 0.222, p = 0.000), drug use (r = 0.087, p = 0.049), and CD4 > 350 cells/mm3 (r = 0.118, p = 0.008); and strong correlation between the variables 'in treatment' and undetectable viral load (r = -0.937, p = 0.113).
The characteristics of the indidual vulnerability of LGBT people involve, among other aspects, issues of gender and social exclusion, a situation that is part of the daily life of PLHIV/AIDS in many scenarios and territories. This can be alleviated with a network of social and health support and effecte and efficient, protecte, attitudinal, and behavioural public policies.
Abstract: This article sought to estimate factors associated with the psychological well-being of transvestites and trans women. It is a cross-sectional study with 602 transvestites and trans individuals in seven cities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil from 2014 to 2015. We carried out a sample selection through a consecutive approach and using the snowball technique. The dependent variable was psychological well-being (WHOQOL-BREF) and the independent variables were: sociodemographic characteristics, body modifications, health conditions, violence and incarceration. We used a multiple variance analysis to identify associated factors. Most were black or brown and were aged between 25 and 39 years, had up to complete secondary education, individual income of up to two times the minimum wage and worked, and 42.3% were sex workers. Around one-quarter had been incarcerated. Around one-quarter were in treatment for HIV. Mean psychological well-being score was 63.2 (95%CI: 61.8-64.6). In the multiple analysis, the factors associated with lower psychological well-being were: not having a fixed address, having lower educational levels, being dissatisfied with personal relationships, friend support or the gender-affirming procedures they had undergone and having suffered verbal or sexual violence. While worse living conditions and exposure to violence harm the psychological well-being of transvestites and trans women, the possibility of undergoing desired body transformations and having their social name respected interfere positively in their evaluations of their lives.

The development of sustainable and safe strategies to protect the environment and human health from the harmful effect of metals has become an issue of great concern for the scientific community. ...Aluminium is abundant in nature but with low bioavailability, under normal environmental conditions. However, acid rains and the extensive employment of this metal in different fields could provoke its release in significant concentrations in various environmental and biological compartments, with a possible depletion or replacement of nutrients and essential metal cations, such as Ca2+ and Mg2+. A previous study demonstrated a very good affinity of five 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (3,4-HP) ligands towards Al3+. To confirm their potential for practical applications, an in-depth thermodynamic study was performed to ascertain if, beside their sequestering capability towards the M3+, there could be a possible depletion of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The M2+/(3,4-HP) complexation was investigated at 0.15 ≤ I/mol L−1 ≤ 1.00 and 288.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 310.15 in NaCl(aq), obtaining information on speciation models, stability constants and thermodynamic parameters dependence on ionic strength and temperature. Furthermore, the ligands sequestering ability towards Ca2+ and Mg2+ was evaluated calculating the pL0.5 parameter (total concentration of ligand required to remove 50% of metal in trace). A comparison among the obtained data with those already reported in literature for Al3+/(3,4-HP) systems, showed that, from the thermodynamic point of view, no competition between Ca2+/Mg2+ and Al3+ should occur since the ligands under study promote the M3+ removal from the human body, but hindering the possibility of essential metals depletion.

•Ca2+ and Mg2+ complexation by 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone ligands was investigated.•Higher stability found for Mg2+/ligands species with respect to Ca2+ complexes.•Comparison of the obtained thermodynamic data with those already reported for Al3+•Evaluation of possible Ca2+/Mg2+ depletion beside an effective Al3+ sequestration•No thermodynamic competition between the metals and Al3+ removing from human body
Ecto-nucleotidase activity is involved in the infection process of
and various other parasites that enables modulation of host immune responses to promote disease progression. One of the enzymes ...responsible for this activity is the ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (E-NTPDase). The enzyme hydrolyzes nucleotides tri- and/or di-phosphate into monophosphate products, which are subsequently hydrolyzed into adenosine. These nucleotides can serve as purinergic signaling molecules involved in diverse cellular processes that govern immune responses. Given the importance of the extracellular metabolism of these nucleotides during intracellular pathogen infections, this study evaluates the role of ecto-nucleotidase activity during
(
) infection in human macrophages. E-NTPDase protein expression and activity was evaluated in
during purine starvation, adenosine-enriched medium, or in the presence of an inhibitor of ecto-nucleotidases. Results show that E-NTPDase is expressed in
parasites, including on the cell membrane. Furthermore, functional activity of the enzyme was modulated according to the availability of adenosine in the medium. Purine starvation increased the hydrolytic capacity of nucleotides leading to higher infectivity, while growth in adenosine-enriched medium led to lower infectivity. Moreover, inhibiting E-NTPDase function decreased
infection in macrophages, suggesting the enzyme may serve as a ligand. Taken together, the ability of
to hydrolyze nucleotides is directly associated with increased infectivity in macrophages.
Cucurbita pepo
L., an important crop in Brazil, can be infected by zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), an aphid-transmitted
Potyvirus
. To avoid the use of insecticides, sustainable control could ...involve the application of leaf extracts (LE) with antiviral activity, particularly Caryophyllales species. However, the mode of action is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the defense responses of
C. pepo
‘Caserta’ infected with ZYMV (VI) compared to plants treated with LE from the Brazilian native species
Seguieria langsdorffii
, order Caryophyllales, and those treated with LE before ZYMV inoculation (LEVI). Cotyledonary leaves were collected on the same day, one, five, and ten days after inoculation (D0, D1, D5, and D10). Polyamines were identified using a calibration curve of putrescine, spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) samples. Ascorbate and glutathione were identified and quantified using a calibration curve of ascorbic acid and glutathione samples. Metabolomic analysis was also performed based on the metabolic profile, using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and quantified using ribitol as the internal standard. There was an increase in Spd and Spm and ascorbate contents in plants from the LEVI treatment on D0 and D10, respectively. Shikimate levels were higher in the LE group on D0 and D1. We suggest that LE may have exerted a priming effect, which could have helped the plant respond to the viral infection, based primarily on spermine and shikimate contents.
