The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has recently found compelling evidence for a particular blazar producing high-energy neutrinos and PeV cosmic rays, however the sources of cosmic rays above several ...EeV remain unidentified. It is believed that the same environments that accelerate ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) also produce high-energy neutrinos via hadronic interactions of lower-energy cosmic rays. Two out of three joint analyses of the Ice- Cube Neutrino Observatory, the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array yielded hints for a possible directional correlation of high-energy neutrinos and UHECRs. These hints however became less significant with more data. Recently, an improved analysis with an approach complementary to the other analyses has been developed. This analysis searches for neutrino point sources in the vicinity of UHECRs with search windows estimated from deflections by galactic magnetic fields. We present this new analysis method for searching common hadronic sources, additionally including neutrino data measured by ANTARES in order to increase the sensitivity to possible correlations in the Southern Hemisphere.
Laboratory tests are frequently ordered by general practitioners (GPs), but little is known about time trends and between-GP variation of their use. In this retrospective longitudinal study, we ...analyzed over six million consultations by Swiss GPs during the decade 2009–2018. For 15 commonly used test types, we defined specific laboratory testing rates (sLTR) as the percentage of consultations involving corresponding laboratory testing requests. Patient age- and sex-adjusted time trends of sLTR were modeled with mixed-effect logistic regression accounting for clustering of patients within GPs. We quantified between-GP variation by means of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Nine out of the 15 laboratory test types considered showed significant temporal increases, most eminently vitamin D (ten-year odds ratio (OR) 1.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.71–2.06) and glycated hemoglobin (ten-year OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.82–1.92). Test types both subject to substantial increase and high between-GP variation of sLTR were vitamin D (ICC 0.075), glycated hemoglobin (ICC 0.101), C-reactive protein (ICC 0.202), and vitamin B12 (ICC 0.166). Increasing testing frequencies and large between-GP variation of specific test type use pointed at inconsistencies of medical practice and potential overuse.

The discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV range by IceCube marked the start of neutrino astronomy, and the search for their sources continues. Two promising source ...candidates have been identified by IceCube: NGC 1068 in the 1 TeV-10 TeV range and TXS 0506+056 in the 0.1-1 PeV range. Both sources have gamma-ray counterparts, but additional time information of both neutrinos and gamma rays were essential for the identification of TXS 0506+056. The Planetary Neutrino Monitoring (PLEnuM) concept is an approach for combining the exposures of all current and future neutrino observatories - such as KM3NeT, Baikal-GVD, P-ONE in the Northern Hemisphere, and IceCube-Gen2 in the Southern Hemisphere. Using this PLEnuM approach, we estimate how the detection capability for transient sources candidates like blazars and GRBs improves once the future neutrino observatories come online. In addition, we present how the combined, instantaneous field of view of PLEnuM improves the real-time detection rate of rare, very-high-energy neutrinos across the entire sky.
The purpose of this dissertation study was to describe how students who provide care for a person with a disability or chronic illness cope with the demands of both roles. The way students cope with ...stress has a direct impact on overall health, which has an impact on learning, development, and retention. Student caregivers are considered nontraditional students; nontraditional students are more likely to drop out of higher education because of obstacles in their non-academic life. Historically, student affairs professionals have developed programs and services to meet the challenges of underrepresented students in higher education. More than half of family caregivers are between the ages of 18-49, due to the aging population. The number of student caregivers enrolled in higher education will continue to increase and they are not adequately represented in student affairs literature. Data for this qualitative study was collected through a combination of individual interviews and a focus group to understand: who student caregivers were caring for, how they coped with their dual roles, and how the institution they attended supported them. While each student caregiving experience is unique, the fundamentals of student caregiving are consistent; student caregivers must often choose between completing academic tasks and caring for a human being. The participants represented a variety of disciplines, which highlights the need for student affairs professionals, faculty, and administrators across the academy to understand the specific challenges they face. The Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE) is a proposed cubic-kilometer scale neutrino telescope planned to be installed in the deep-sea of the north-east Pacific Ocean. In collaboration with the ...optical deep-sea data and communications network operated by Ocean Networks Canada, an international collaboration of researchers plans to install an array of kilometer-long mooring lines in a depth of around 2660 m to the relatively flat deep-sea region called Cascadia Basin, around 300 miles West of Vancouver Island. With the design and development ongoing, the P-ONE collaboration is interested to initiate participation of fellow scientists of the oceanographic and marine science communities to provide expertise and experience towards deploying additional or inclusive instrumentation and measurement strategies for doing oceanographic research. In addition to the monitoring of optical bioluminescence and deep-ocean dynamics and thermodynamics, active and passive acoustics can be installed within the P-ONE array. This letter summarizes the P-ONE detector and a non-exhaustive list of potential topics of interest for oceanographic and marine research.
High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, discovered by IceCube, are now regularly
observed, albeit at a low rate due to their low flux. As a result, open
questions about high-energy neutrino astrophysics ...and particle physics remain
limited by statistics at best, or unanswered at worst. Fortunately, this
situation will improve soon: in the next few years, a host of new neutrino
telescopes, currently under planning and construction, will come online. It is
natural to combine their collected observing power: we propose the Planetary
Neutrino Monitoring System (PLE$\nu$M), a concept for a global repository of
high-energy neutrino observations, in order to finally give firm answers to
open questions. PLE$\nu$M will reach up to four times the exposure available
today by combining the exposures of current and future neutrino telescopes
distributed around the world -- IceCube, IceCube-Gen2, Baikal-GVD, KM3NeT, and
P-ONE. Depending on the declination and spectral index, PLE$\nu$M will improve
the sensitivity to astrophysical neutrinos by up to two orders of magnitude. We
present first estimates on the capability of PLE$\nu$M to discover Galactic and
extragalactic sources of astrophysical neutrinos and to characterize the
diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos in unprecedented detail.
