Abstract
In educational measurement, various methods have been proposed to infer student proficiency from the ratings of multiple items (e.g., essays) by multiple raters. However, suitable models ...quickly become numerically demanding or even unfeasible as separate latent variables are needed to account for local dependencies between the ratings of the same response. Therefore, in the present paper we derive a flexible approach based on Thurstone’s law of categorical judgment. The advantage of this approach is that it can be fit using weighted least squares estimation which is computationally less demanding as compared to most of the previous approaches in the case of an increasing number of latent variables. In addition, the new approach can be applied using existing latent variable modeling software. We illustrate the model on a real dataset from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMSS) comprising ratings of 10 items by 4 raters for 150 subjects. In addition, we compare the new model to existing models including the facet model, the hierarchical rater model, and the hierarchical rater latent class model.
The purpose of this study was to examine master's theses completed between 2000-2008, at Institutes of Educational Sciences of Turkish state universities in terms of the types of statistical ...tecniques used and of the fit between statistical techniques and the data at hand. A data collection instrument developed by the researchers was used in this qualitative text analysis. The results showed that quantitative studies were more prevalent than other research methods and descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient were more commonly used than multivariate parametric and nonparametric data analytic techniques.
As a Class II evidence based approach, Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) hasn’t been implementing widely. The aim of this study was determined the opinions of teachers’ who use AVT in their practices ...about practicality of AVT, their expectations from each other and AVT practices in Turkey, and also specify the teachers’ perspective about AVT course intensity in undergraduate education. For this purpose semi-structured interview was conducted with five teachers who implemented AVT at least three years and with five families who were involved in AVT training for the last 2 years. This study was conducted as a descriptive design which is one of the qualitative research studies. Content analysis and descriptive analysis were used. In the results, teachers stated that working in person with hearing impaired children’s families has positive impact on speech perception, language development and speech production. Additionally, they agreed that AVT hasn’t been known adequately in Turkey and they needed more courses in their undergraduate educations. As a result it is thought that if AVT takes more place during undergraduate education and teachers can have in-service education about it, AVT may become widespread and may become more useful for children with hearing loss and their families.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the extent students' learning strategies and reading enjoyment variables predicted PISA 2009 reading achievement, and to examine whether reading ...enjoyment had a mediator effect in the relationship between reading achievement and learning strategies. Methods: In this correlational study, Turkey PISA 2009 reading comprehension cognitive test and student questionnaires were used for data collection. Learning strategies and reading pleasure which was related to students' reading comprehension achievement were identified as predictive variables and index values of these variables were used. The data were analysed using hierarchical linear models (HLM). Findings: The results of the HLM analysis showed that the students who used control strategies more frequently had higher reading scores. Memorization was negatively associated with reading literacy and the elaboration strategies had no effect on achievement. Reading enjoyment was identified as a variable that improved students' reading performance. It was found out that control and elaboration strategies directly affected student's reading enjoyment whereas memorisation did not have such a direct effect. The results related to the indirect effect between variables showed that reading enjoyment had a partial mediator effect for the control strategy and had a full mediating effect for elaboration. Implications for Research and Practice: Teachers are encouraged to use deep learning strategies instead of surface learning strategies. Teachers can inform their students about what deep learning strategies are, why they are more effective than others, and how to use them. The think aloud technique can be used to show how this strategy can be used in daily life.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive validity of the 2003 University Student Selection Examination (OSS). For this purpose, freshman grade point average (FGPA) in higher ...education was predicted by raw scores, standard scores, and placement scores (YEP). This study has been conducted on a research group. In this study, six programs--which accept students by verbal, numerical and equal weighted scores--were selected. These programs are agricultural engineering, civil engineering, law, business administration, social studies education, Turkish Language and Literature. The study was conducted with 2103 students from these programs. Data related with dependent variables used in this study has been gathered from universities' student affairs information centers. Data related with independent variables has been received from the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM). Stepwise regression analysis was used in order to analyze the data. It was found that the significant predictors of students' FGPA is YEP which is used for the placement of agricultural engineering, civil engineering, and social studies education program students, Y-OSS SAY scores which is not used for the placement of business administration program students and three YEP's (Y-OSS SOZ, Y-OSS SAY, Y-OSS EA) which is used for the placement of law program students. In this research, the classical test theory and generalizability theory analyses were carried out with the data obtained by a job performance scale for the years 2005 and 2006. The reliability ...coefficients obtained (estimated) from the classical test theory and generalizability theory analyses were compared. In classical test theory, test retest and Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient, Kendall's concordance coefficient for interrater reliability; in generalizability theory, G and Phi coefficients with multivariate model were computed and the consistency of these coefficients were examined. As the result of the research, it is seen that for the same measurement condition, the reliability coefficients obtained from the classical test theory and from the multivariate model of generalizability theory generated harmonious results.
