local insulation, is desirable ...for more sophisticated applications. In the present work, a multi-material process allowing for realization of a ceramic coating on a steel substrate and a novel sandwich system are introduced. Both were manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). As a first step, the microstructure of a bulk zirconia–alumina ceramic, directly manufactured by SLM, was examined and its tensile strength determined. Afterwards, the ceramic was manufactured directly on the as-built surface of a tool steel processed by SLM. For this compound, the adhesive strength was determined. Finally, an open porous structure, made of the same tool steel, was built on top of the ceramic layer. The results clearly prove that the SLM process can be used for direct manufacturing of a multi-material sandwich structure made from metal and ceramic, providing an important step towards complex structures functionalized for electric insulation.
Despite evidence for plumes on Jupiter's moon Europa, no surface features have been definitively identified as the source of the plumes to date. Furthermore, it remains unknown whether the activity ...originates from near‐surface water reservoirs within the ice shell or if it is sourced from the underlying global ocean. Here we investigate brine pocket migration, studied previously in the context of sea ice on Earth, as a process for transporting brine along thermal gradients. We show that the fracture system located in the center of Europa's Manannán crater is consistent with the formation of a subsurface brine reservoir. After the initial impact, residual aqueous melt concentrated via brine pocket migration as the target material cooled. Freezing and overpressurization then resulted in a cryovolcanic eruption. The volume of the emptied reservoir and the critical composition at the end of migration provide further constraints on the average salinity of Europa's ice shell.
Plain Language Summary
Jupiter's satellite Europa has a subsurface ocean covered by an icy shell. We show how small pockets of brine can migrate within the ice from colder areas to warmer areas. This can happen even at very low temperatures, below the point where pure water would freeze, because the water becomes saltier and saltier as it migrates. By looking at an impact crater on Europa, which was initially warm in the center and cooled inward from its colder surroundings, we can study how the water migrated toward the center and formed a central water reservoir. As the final water pocket at the center of the crater started to freeze, the increasing pressure lead to a cryovolcanic eruption that emplaced brine onto the surface to form a prominent “spider” feature before the ice collapsed into the cavity below. Using a digital terrain model of the crater and collapse feature, we estimate how much water erupted and how salty Europa's ice shell is.

AimsTo quantify right ventricular (RV) function in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) before and after pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA).MethodsOut of 33 patients, 16 ...were evaluated clinically and with echocardiography (conventional and myocardial deformation parameters) before PEA (preop) and at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after PEA. RV fractional area change (RVFAC), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) as well as mid-apical and basal peak ejection strain (S) and strain rate (SR) of the RV free wall were measured. Left ventricular (LV) apical lateral wall motion was regarded as indicating changes in overall heart rocking motion (RM). Heart catheterisation was performed before, within 1 week and at 6 months after PEA.ResultsClinical and haemodynamic parameters improved significantly after PEA. This correlated with the improvement in RVFAC, S and SR. TAPSE, on the other hand, showed a biphasic response (14.5 (4) mm preop, 8.5 (2.7) mm at 1 week and 11 (1.5) mm at 6 months). Changes in LV apical motion explain this finding. At baseline, TAPSE was enhanced by rocking motion of the heart as a result of the failing RV. Unloading the RV by PEA normalised the rocking motion and TAPSE decreased.ConclusionsRV function of CTEPH patients improves steadily after PEA. Unlike S, SR and RVFAC, this is not reflected by TAPSE because of postoperative changes in overall heart motion. Motion independent deformation parameters (S, SR) appear superior in the accurate description of regional RV function
Conflicting data exist about the relationship between cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and diastolic function.
Aims of the study are to assess diastolic patterns in patients undergoing CRT ...according to the 2016 recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography/European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging and to evaluate the prognostic value of diastolic dysfunction (DD) in CRT candidates.
One-hundred ninety-three patients (age: 67 ± 11 years, QRS width: 167 ± 21 ms) were included in this multicentre prospective study. Mitral filling pattern, mitral tissue Doppler velocity, tricuspid regurgitation velocity, and indexed left atrial volume were used to classify DD from grade I to III. CRT-response, defined as a reduction of left ventricular (LV) end-systolic volume > 15% at 6-month follow-up (FU), occurred in 132 (68%) patients. The primary endpoint was a composite of heart transplantation, LV assisted device implantation, or all-cause death during FU and occurred in 29 (15%) patients.
CRT was associated with a degradation of DD in non-responders. At multivariable analysis corrected for clinical variables, QRS duration, mitral regurgitation, CRT-response and LV dyssynchrony, grade I DD was associated with a better outcome (HR 0.37, 95% CI: 0.14–0.96). Non-responders with grade II-III DD had the worse prognosis (HR 4.36, 95%CI: 2.10–9.06).
The evaluation of DD in CRT candidates allows the prognostic stratification of patients, independently from CRT-response.

We report on an optically pumped magnetometer that uses multiple laser beams to pump and probe spin-polarized Cs atoms. The selected sensor geometry allows for operation in finite magnetic fields as ...well as close to zero field. In finite fields the magnetometer employs free spin precession signals to determine the field modulus and direction as described in a separate publication. This publication focuses on the magnetometer operation close to zero field, which is based on a ground state Hanle resonance. The four laser beams permit the simultaneous measurement of two orthogonal magnetic field components in a differential detection scheme that greatly suppresses technical laser power noise. Sensitivities better than 54 fT/Hz
could be demonstrated simultaneously for both measurement channels in a well shielded environment. A minimum Allan deviation, limited by residual field fluctuations, of better than 40 fT was observed for integration times of 2s. The magnetometer achieves high sensitivity and stability in offset fields as well as close to zero field and is, thus, a universal tool for low frequency magnetic field measurements.
In DNA, thymine typically forms hydrogen bonds with adenine to hold two complementary strands together and to preserve the genetic code. While thymine is typically absent in RNA, a thymine–thymine ...hydrogen bonding structure is reminiscent of the wobble region in tRNA recognition, where noncanonical base pairing can occur. This noncanonical base pairing can be applied to synthetic polymer systems, where thymine is free to hydrogen bond with itself. In this work, the natural hydrogen bonding capacity of thymine was used to produce silicone polymer systems designed to be cross-linked by hydrogen bonds. Backbone and end-group-modified silicones were synthesized with differing concentrations of thymine, which facilitated the cross-linking of the polymeric strands. Removing the hydrogen on N3which is typically involved in hydrogen bondingresulted in systems with similar viscosities to the starting material and that were devoid of any apparent cross-links. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies of the thymine-modified polymers displayed thermal absorptions and releases, indicative of bond breaking and reformation, around 100 and 60 °C, respectively. The cycle of bond breaking and formation could be repeated without any noticeable degradation of the chemical structure of the polymers. These polymeric materials could be readily recycled and remolded by heating them at 110 °C for 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature, confirming their thermoplastic nature.
Recognizing the critical need for standardization in strain imaging, in 2010, the European Association of Echocardiography (now the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, EACVI) and the ...American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) invited technical representatives from all interested vendors to participate in a concerted effort to reduce intervendor variability of strain measurement. As an initial product of the work of the EACVI/ASE/Industry initiative to standardize deformation imaging, we prepared this technical document which is intended to provide definitions, names, abbreviations, formulas, and procedures for calculation of physical quantities derived from speckle tracking echocardiography and thus create a common standard.
