The isospin character of p-n pairs at large relative momentum has been observed for the first time in the ^{16}O ground state. A strong population of the J,T=1,0 state and a very weak population of ...the J,T=0,1 state were observed in the neutron pickup domain of ^{16}O(p,pd) at 392 MeV. This strong isospin dependence at large momentum transfer is not reproduced by the distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with known spectroscopic amplitudes. The results indicate the presence of high-momentum protons and neutrons induced by the tensor interactions in the ground state of ^{16}O.

This article describes the new primary proton beamline 1U at TRIUMF. The purpose of this beamline is to produce ultracold neutrons (UCN) for fundamental-physics experiments. It delivers up to 40µA of ...480MeV protons from the TRIUMF cyclotron to a tungsten spallation target and uses a fast kicker to share the beam between the Center for Molecular and Materials Science and UCN. The beamline has been successfully commissioned and operated with a beam current up to 10µA, facilitating first large-scale UCN production in Canada.
We have found that the ratio of Fe to Al in suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the intermediate layer of the Okhotsk Sea increases to the open ocean from the dense shelf water on the northwestern ...continental shelf, which is the source of southward-flowing Okhotsk Sea Intermediate Water (OSIW). The SPM concentration and the Al content of the SPM decrease along the course of the OSIW, whereas the ratios of Ba and Mn to Al increase. The SPM samples on the continental shelf were collected in waters characterized by low N (the deviation from the stoichiometric relationship between nitrogenous nutrients and phosphate). These low N* values imply that sedimentary denitrification occurs on the continental shelf, and both Fe and Mn are concomitantly reduced in the sediments and diffuse from the sediments to the overlying waters, where they are subsequently oxidized and precipitate. We assume that the SPM in the intermediate layer is influenced mainly by horizontal transport from the continental shelf to the ocean interior and that Ba can be used as a proxy for organic matter. Based on these assumptions, the results could reflect the following processes: 1) a gradual loss of denser lithogenic matter, evidenced by the decreases of the SPM concentration and of the Al content of the SPM, and 2) a relative increase of the Fe and Mn fractions associated with the organic matter in the SPM, which is derived from the continental shelf. The organic matter-related Fe and Mn could also be affected by the precipitation of both Fe and Mn just above the reduced sediments of the continental shelf. Our results show that the particulate Fe associated with organic matter is preferentially transported from the northwestern continental shelf to the open ocean.

Objective: To evaluate the ability of Moisture Checker for Mucus (MCM), a device which measures the weight percent of water content in the oral mucosal epithelium, for the diagnosis of dry mouth.
...Method: Forty‐three consecutive patients seen at the Dry Mouth Clinic of Tsurumi University were divided into two groups by the diagnostic criteria of hyposalivation defined by the stimulated salivary flow rate ≤10 ml per 10 min. The MCM values in the buccal, tongue and labial mucosa in each group were compared.
Results: The value of the normal salivation group was significantly higher when compared with that of the hyposalivation group both in the buccal and tongue mucosa, P = 0.01 and P = 0.046, respectively.
Conclusion: Moisture Checker for Mucus has the potential to be a useful device in the screening of hyposalivation.

We are presently working on a new project ‘pionic atom factory project’ at RIBF. The project aims at precision spectroscopy of the energy spectrum of the pionic atom for a wide range of elements, ...using missing-mass spectroscopy of the (d,3He) reaction near the π- emission threshold. For this project, we developed a new ion optics for BigRIPS using the dispersion-matching method. In this optics the BigRIPS beam line is used as a high resolving-power forward angle spectrometer to momentum-analyze 3He. We are aiming for a spectral resolution of <400keV (FWHM). An overview of the new optics and the result of a pilot experiment are reported.
Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future ...satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/
f
noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. In May 2019, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA, selected LiteBIRD as the strategic large mission No. 2.
