WITH MAGISTERIAL abandon, attempts have been made to fix the limits of a Catholic poem, and even to prescribe the cut of the Catholic poet's hair. I am not so brash as to order a new Catholic novel ...or epic according to a theological blueprint. I am rather attempting to show the great lines along which Faith and the Redemption have opened up new vistas of beauty and truth to the Christian artist or poet who has the insight, and the humility, to exploit them.

THE English Review has been combined with its great conservative contemporary the National Review. In the final number Mr. Derek Walker-Smith sketches in broad outline a program for England which, ...despite certain features to which one might take exception, is representative of all that is best and essential in conservative thought. He demands an efficient conduct of industry in which all will have a high standard of living, and where there will be a sense of corporate striving for the common welfare.
We conducted a Phase II study to determine the efficacy of cisplatin, doxorubicin, mitomycin C, and 5-fluorouracil in patients with untreated non-small cell lung cancer. Patients were accrued through ...the Connecticut Oncology Association (COA), an organization composed of community and university oncologists. Thirteen COA oncologists enrolled 30 patients over 12 months and 26 were eligible for the final analysis. Patients received cisplatin 75 mg/m2, doxorubicin 30 mg/m2, mitomycin C 6.5 mg/m2, and 5-fluorouracil 750 mg/m2 on day 1. The treatment was repeated every 4 weeks, with mitomycin C given during the first 3 cycles and then every other cycle. There were 5 (19%) partial responses, lasting 1.3-7.3 months. The median time to progression was 10.3 months (0.3-12.5 months). Median survival was 7.5 months (0.3-34 months). The major toxicities were related to myelosuppression and there was one septic death. This study demonstrates the limited efficacy of an aggressive regimen using "active" agents in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
We say that a unital C*-algrebra A has the approximate positive factorization property (APFP) if every element of A is a norm limit of products of positive elements of A. (There is also a definition ...for the nonunital case.) T. Quinn has recently shown that a unital AF algebra has the APFP if and only if it has no finite dimensional quotients. This paper is a more systematic investigation of C*-algebras with the APFP. We prove various properties of such algebras. For example: They have connected invertible group, trivial K_1, and stable rank 1. In the unital case, the K_0 group separates the tracial states. The APFP passes to matrix algebras. and if I is an ideal in A such that I and A/I have the APFP, then so does A. We also give some new examples of C*-algebras with the APFP, including type II_1 factors and infinite-dimensional simple unital direct limits with slow dimension growth, real rank zero, and trivial K_1 group. An infinite- dimensional simple unital direct limit with slow dimension growth and with the APFP must have real rank zero, but we also give examples of unital algebras with the APFP which do not have real rank zero. Our analysis also leads to the introduction of a new concept of rank for a C*-algebra that may be of interest in the future.
To determine the extent of non-attendance at first hospital appointments 269 hospital referrals made in one practice over 14 weeks were analysed retrospectively. Non-attendance was more likely among ...patients referred to outpatient departments than to casualty or for admission. Fifteen per cent (41/269) of all patients and 20% (33/167) of outpatients failed to keep their initial appointments. Prolonged waiting times from referral to appointment were significantly related to non-attendance. Twenty weeks after the last referral had been made no communication had been received by the practice for 24% (61/252) of all referral letters received by the hospital. Minimum delays to appointments and improved communication between hospitals and general practitioners would help general practitioners to make appropriate referrals and improve compliance.
