One of the major determinants of an artist's SS is his ES. The practice of patronization involved a prolongation of the medieval proprietary serf relationships. The motive behind patronization was ...not real love of the arts, but the patron's need to augment his personal prestige. At the various courts, art was a form of entertainment rather than an esthetic experience. To ensure social & ES for the artist, the community should rationally understand the various dimensions of artistic work. This prerequisite can be actualized only in the modern, functional society. In such a society, the criteria for determining the artist's social & ES are his work, abilities, the value of his product, & its social usefulness. In calculating the value of the artist's work, several elements should be considered: time of actual work, time spent on conceiving the work, elaboration & shaping of the project, collection of necessary materials, revision of project, & time spent resting. Beside work, the cost of materials, market price of the product, etc, are also factors for determining the artist's ES. Modified HA.
A study which expounds the results of interviewing 206 free-lance artists of the SR, from all branches of art. The investigation was carried out in Feb 1969 by the combined method of survey & ...interview. 436 free-lance artists were located, but the study included only those who are not in a permanent work relationship, who enjoy a full free-lance status. The investigation found that the status of free-lance artists, although rather vague & insufficiently developed, has the following advantages: various forms of freedom, mainly artistic freedom of creation, freedom of personal choice of artistic activity, freedom in conditions of free time for work, & emancipation from bur'ism & admin. Shortcomings cited by the artists are that material earnings are uncertain, insufficient interest on the part of society, impossibility of realizing one's rights toward the employer, & difficulties in obtaining orders. It is pointed out that free-lance artists must rely on finding their own way. They have nothing certain irrespective of their personal creative or real work capabilities. In a material respect, their earnings lag on average behind those of artists with permanent work. However, the fact is that free-lance artists declare that they have achieved more in a creative sense than they would if permanently employed (55%). Personal satisfaction is fairly great (80%).
