A field experiment was conducted during the summer season of 2000-2001 at the Vegetable Research Farm of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (I.A.R.I.), New Delhi (India) to test the efficacy of ...three Azotobacter strains as a potential supplement to nitrogenous fertilizer in improving growth and yield of onion cv. Pusa Madhvi. The treatments consisted of factorial combination of four levels of nitrogen (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg N/ha) and three Azotobacter strains (CBD-15, AS-4 and M-4) with two uninoculated controls one with full dose of N (100 kg/ha) and the other without NPK. Application of 75 kg N/ha along with inoculation of CBD-15 was found to have significantly increased most of the growth and yield parameters, soil available nitrogen, and nitrogen content in the bulb followed by M-4 inoculation as compared to application of full dose of nitrogen without the inoculation. Days to bulb initiation were significantly reduced due to inoculation with CBD-15 or M-4 along with 50 kg N/ha whereas days to bulb maturity were significantly reduced due to inoculation with any of the strains along with the same N rate (50 kg/ha) as compared to application of full dose of nitrogen without the inoculation. The finding demonstrated a saving of 50 kg N/ha without significantly affecting yield and an average increase of 13.5% marketable yield due to Azotobacter inoculation in the presence of 75 kg N/ha.
V letih 2000-2001 je bil na Vegetable Research Farm, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (I.A.R.I.), New Delhi (India) izveden poskus za preverjanje učinkovitost treh sojev Azotobacter kot mo_nih dodatkov k uporabi du_ičnih gnojil, da bi se izbolj_alo rast in pridelek pri čebuli cv. Pusa Madhvi. Poskus je vključeval faktorske kombinacije _tirih ravni preskrbljenosti z du_ikom (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg N/ha) in tri genotipe Azotobacter (CBD-15, AS-4 and M-4), z dvema neinokuliranima kontrolama, od tega eno z odmerkom N (100 kg/ha) in drugo brez gnojenja z NPK. Aplikacija 75 kg N/ha je skupaj z inokulacijo CBD-15 dala pomembno povečanje večine parametrov rasti in pridelka, v tleh dostopnega du_ika in vsebosti du_ika v čebulah po inokulaciji z M-4 , v primerjavi z aplikacijo polnega odmerka du_ika a brez inokulacije. _tevilo dni do začetka tvorbe čebul je bilo značilno manj_e pri inokulaciji z CBD-15 ali M-4 , skupaj z odmerkom 50 kg N/ha. _tevilo dni do zrelih čebul je bilo značilno manj_e pri inokulaciji s katerim koli genotipom pri enakem odmerku N (50 kg/ha), v primerjavi s polnim odmerkom du_ika brez inokulacije. Ugotovitve ka_ejo prihranek 50 kg N/ha brez značilnega zni_anja pridelka. Ugotovljeno je povprečno povečanje tr_nega pridelka za 13,5% pri inokulaciji z Azotobacter-jem in odmerku 75 kg N/ha.

The environmental study, carried out in Slovak Republic, was aimed at the assessment of quality of onion based on the contents of selected heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd) as well as the possible ...correlations among heavy metals in soil and onions (Allium cepa L.).
Gained results showed that in some monitored localities the measured values were exceeded in comparison with limit values given by the Law No. 220/2004 (valid in the Slovak Republic) as well as threshold values proposed by European Commission (2006). In our paper, the values of total cadmium content were in the range from 1.15 to 1.34 mg∙kg
and the content of mobile form of lead was in the range from 0.19 to 1.09 mg∙kg

Badania środowiska, przeprowadzone na Słowacji miały na celu ocenę jakości cebuli poprzez oznaczenie zawartości wybranych metali ciężkich (Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb i Cd), jak również możliwych korelacji pomiędzy obecnością metali ciężkich w glebie i cebuli (Allium cepa L.).
Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że w niektórych monitorowanych lokalizacjach zmierzone wartości zostały przekroczone w stosunku do wartości granicznych określonych w Ustawie nr 220/2004 (obowiązującej w Republice Słowackiej), jak również wartości granicznych zaproponowanych przez Komisję Europejską (KE) (2006). Wyniki naszej pracy wskazują, że wartości całkowitej zawartości kadmu wahają się w zakresie od 1,15 do 1,34 mg∙kg
, a zawartość ołowiu w postaci mobilnej w zakresie od 0,19 do 1,09 mg∙kg
. Zawartość ołowiu we wszystkich próbkach cebuli (z wyjątkiem odmiany Red mat hodowanej w miejscowości Klasov) jest również przekroczona, a wartości wahają się w zakresie od 0,05 do 0,21 mg∙kg
. Wśród odmian stwierdzono statystycznie istotne różnice (p<0,05) w pobieraniu metali ciężkich (porównania wielokrotne dla metali ciężkich w zależności od odmiany, przy 95% przedziale ufności).
Magnesium (Mg) serves specific physiological functions in plants, as it participates in 250÷400 processes and may not be replaced by other elements, even those exhibiting similar physicochemical ...properties, such as Co2+, Mn2+ or Ni2+. The aim of the conducted studies was to optimize magnesium nutrition of onion (Allium cepa L.), through the evaluation of yielding of plants, and to determine its effect on contents of the following elements in leaves and bulbs: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). Magnesium was applied in the quick-acting form, MgSO4·7H2O, based on the chemical analyses of soil, in doses corresponding to 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg Mg·dm-3 soil. The other nutrients were supplemented to standard levels recommended for the cultivation of onion, amounting to (in mg·dm-3 soil) 150 N, 80 P and 200 K. Magnesium nutrition was found to have a positive effect on yielding of onion and its quality. Significantly the highest total yield (4.85 kg·m-2) and merchantable yield (4.78 kg·m-2) were obtained when applying Mg-100, which amounted to an increase by 38% and 45% in comparison with the control combination. Plant nutrition with magnesium in case of leaves significantly affected an improvement of their nutrient status for nitrogen, deterioration of calcium nutrition, while in case of leaves and bulbs that of potassium. Analyzed levels of magnesium nutrition had a significant effect on nutrient status of leaves and bulbs for this nutrient. Leaves accumulated more nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium than bulbs. Controlled magnesium nutrition of plants is an effective method of biofortification of onion with this nutrient.
Magnez (Mg) pełni w roślinie specyficzne funkcje fizjologiczne - bierze udział w 250-400 procesach i nie może być zastąpiony przez inne pierwiastki, nawet o zbliżonych właściwościach fizykochemicznych, takie jak Co2+, Mn2+ czy Ni2+. Celem prowadzonych badań była optymalizacja żywienia cebuli (Allium cepa L.) magnezem poprzez ocenę plonowania roślin oraz jego wpływu na zawartość w liściach i cebulach: azotu (N), fosforu (P), potasu (K), wapnia (Ca) i magnezu (Mg). Magnez zastosowano w formie szybko działającego MgSO4·7H2O, na podstawie analizy chemicznej gleby, w dawkach odpowiadających: 50, 100, 150, 200 mg Mg·dm-3 gleby. Pozostałe składniki pokarmowe uzupełniano do poziomów standardowych polecanych do uprawy cebuli wynoszących (w mg·dm-3 gleby): 150 N, 80 P, 200 K. Stwierdzono pozytywny wpływ żywienia magnezem na plonowanie cebuli oraz jej jakość. Istotnie największy plon ogólny (4,85 kg·m-2) oraz handlowy (4,78 kg·m-2) uzyskano, stosując Mg-100, co stanowiło wzrost o 38% i 45% w porównaniu z kombinacją kontrolną. Żywienie roślin magnezem wpływało istotnie w przypadku liści na poprawę stanu ich odżywienia azotem, pogorszenie odżywienia wapniem - a w przypadku liści i cebuli - potasem. Badane poziomy żywienia magnezem wpływały istotnie na stan odżywienia liści i cebuli tym składnikiem. Liście gromadziły więcej azotu, potasu, wapnia i magnezu niż cebula. Kontrolowane żywienie roślin magnezem jest efektywną metodą biofortyfikacji cebuli w ten składnik.
The study on reasons limiting sales of carrot and onion as a fresh vegetables was carried on at 5 retail points in two locations in Skierniewice and in Lublin both in Poland. Five age group customers ...(total 434) were questioned at groceries shops. As a main factor limiting sales of carrot and onion should be considered the need of peeling and preparing both vegetables before their consumption. It was important for 43,5% purchasers of carrot and for 50,0% purchasers of onion. The other reasons turned out to be fairly less important. As a good solution for sales increase could be the offer of both vegetables ready for immediate consumption for example for carrot as a Baby carrot. The residues and low quality of these vegetables were not important for the questioned consumers. It means that the products in the retail were of good quality.
