The 1970s looks at an iconic decade when the cultural left and economic right came to the fore in American society and the world at large. While many have seen the 1970s as simply a period of ...failures epitomized by Watergate, inflation, the oil crisis, global unrest, and disillusionment with military efforts in Vietnam, Thomas Borstelmann creates a new framework for understanding the period and its legacy. He demonstrates how the 1970s increased social inclusiveness and, at the same time, encouraged commitments to the free market and wariness of government. As a result, American culture and much of the rest of the world became more--and less--equal.
Turkish Politics and ‘The People’ enhances our understanding of ‘the popular’ in the study of politics through a critical examination of the uses and constructions of ‘the people’ from the ...establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923, to the present. It proposes ways of reading the insertion and operationalisation of the notion of ‘the people’ as a concept, a political subject, the object of policy and politics over the past century. It assesses the ways ‘the people’ have been shaped by the history of the republic, and, in turn, have informed ways of visualising society, the country’s political culture, institutional architecture and framed the parameters and repertoires of political action.Drawing on extensive archival research and contributions from historical sociology and social movement research, Spyros A. Sofos enriches the ways of approaching the ‘popular’ by proposing ways of integrating identity, discourse, strategy, organisation and leadership in the articulation of ‘the people’ in political discourse and action.
Social movements have wrought dramatic changes upon American society. This raises the question: Why do some movements succeed in their endeavors while others fail? Luders answers this question by ...introducing an analytical framework that begins with a shift in emphasis away from the characteristics of movements toward the targets of protests and affected bystanders and why they respond as they do. This shift brings into focus how targets and other interests assess both their exposure to movement disruptions as well as the costs of conceding to movement demands. From this point, diverse outcomes stem not only from a movement's capabilities for protest but also from differences among targets and others in their vulnerability to disruption and the substance of movement goals. Applied to the civil rights movement, this approach recasts conventional accounts of the movement's outcome in local struggles and national politics and clarifies the broader logic of social change.

Profiles of influential Black women activists at a
historic moment
This volume offers a panoramic view of Black feminist politics
through the stories of a remarkable cross section of Black women
who ...attended the 1977 National Women's Conference. These women
advocated for civil and women's rights but also for accessibility,
lesbians, sex workers, welfare recipients, laborers, and
children.
The women featured in this book include icons Coretta Scott King
and Michelle Cearcy, a teenager who served as a torchbearer at the
conference. Contributors offer insights into the lives of Gloria
Scott, Dorothy Height, Freddie Groomes-McLendon, and Jeffalyn
Johnson. The profiles include activist organizers Georgia McMurray,
Barbara Smith, Johnnie Tillmon, Addie Wyatt, and Florynce Kennedy.
The hard-won achievements of politicians are examined and
celebrated, including those of Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm,
Maxine Waters, C. Delores Tucker, the first Black female secretary
of state for Pennsylvania, and Yvonne Burke, one of the first Black
women elected to Congress and the first representative to give
birth while serving. The final profiles cover Clara McClaughlin,
reporter Melba Tolliver, and photojournalist Diana Mara Henry, who
shared the details of the conference and the continual work being
done by Black women with others through various media channels.
This book places the diversity of Black women's experiences and
their leadership at the center of the history of the women's
movement.

In the last three decades, Turkey has attempted to build close relationships with Russia, Iran and the Turkic World. As a result, there has been ongoing debate about the extent to which Turkey’s ...international relations axis is shifting eastwards. Ozgur Tufekci argues that Eurasianist ideology has been fundamental to Turkish foreign policy and continues to have influence today. The author first explores the historical roots of Eurasianism in the 19th century, comparing this to Neo-Eurasianism and Pan-Slavism. The Ozal era (1983-1993), the Cem era (1997-2002) and Davutoglu era (since 2003) are then examined to reveal how foreign policy making has been informed by discourses of Eurasianism, and how Eurasianist ideas were implemented through internal and external socio-economic and political factors.
