This paper examines the art historical discourse on the Jesuit and University Church in Trnava (Tyrnau, Nagyszombat) in the period before and after the communist takeover of power in Czechoslovakia. ...It provides insight into the history of research of one of the most significant monuments of early Baroque architecture in the former Danube Monarchy, in order to give an idea of the main problems in the art historical practice under the influence of communist ideology.
The story of modernity told through a cultural history
of twentieth-century Prague Setting out to recover the
roots of modernity in the boulevards, interiors, and arcades of the
"city of light," ...Walter Benjamin dubbed Paris "the capital of the
nineteenth century." In this eagerly anticipated sequel to his
acclaimed Coasts of Bohemia: A Czech History , Derek Sayer
argues that Prague could well be seen as the capital of the much
darker twentieth century. Ranging across twentieth-century Prague's
astonishingly vibrant and always surprising human landscape, this
richly illustrated cultural history describes how the city has
experienced (and suffered) more ways of being modern than perhaps
any other metropolis. Located at the crossroads of struggles
between democratic, communist, and fascist visions of the modern
world, twentieth-century Prague witnessed revolutions and
invasions, national liberation and ethnic cleansing, the Holocaust,
show trials, and snuffed-out dreams of "socialism with a human
face." Yet between the wars, when Prague was the capital of
Europe's most easterly parliamentary democracy, it was also a
hotbed of artistic and architectural modernism, and a center of
surrealism second only to Paris. Focusing on these years, Sayer
explores Prague's spectacular modern buildings, monuments,
paintings, books, films, operas, exhibitions, and much more. A
place where the utopian fantasies of the century repeatedly
unraveled, Prague was tailor-made for surrealist André Breton's
"black humor," and Sayer discusses the way the city produced
unrivaled connoisseurs of grim comedy, from Franz Kafka and
Jaroslav Hasek to Milan Kundera and Václav Havel. A masterful and
unforgettable account of a city where an idling flaneur could just
as easily be a secret policeman, this book vividly shows why Prague
can teach us so much about the twentieth century and what made us
who we are.
A new approach to late Ottoman visual culture and its place in the world With its idiosyncratic yet unmistakable adaptation of European Baroque models, the eighteenth-century architecture of Istanbul ...has frequently been dismissed by modern observers as inauthentic and derivative, a view reflecting broader unease with notions of Western influence on Islamic cultures. In Ottoman Baroque —the first English-language book on the topic—Ünver Rüstem provides a compelling reassessment of this building style and shows how between 1740 and 1800 the Ottomans consciously coopted European forms to craft a new, politically charged, and globally resonant image for their empire's capital.Rüstem reclaims the label "Ottoman Baroque" as a productive framework for exploring the connectedness of Istanbul's eighteenth-century buildings to other traditions of the period. Using a wealth of primary sources, he demonstrates that this architecture was in its own day lauded by Ottomans and foreigners alike for its fresh, cosmopolitan effect. Purposefully and creatively assimilated, the style's cross-cultural borrowings were combined with Byzantine references that asserted the Ottomans' entitlement to the Classical artistic heritage of Europe. Such aesthetic rebranding was part of a larger endeavor to reaffirm the empire's power at a time of intensified East- West contact, taking its boldest shape in a series of imperial mosques built across the city as landmarks of a state-sponsored idiom.Copiously illustrated and drawing on previously unpublished documents, Ottoman Baroque breaks new ground in our understanding of Islamic visual culture in the modern era and offers a persuasive counterpoint to Eurocentric accounts of global art history.
i arhitekturi. Palača je ...sagrađena 1774.-1775. za grofa Josipa III. Keglevića,
prema projektu varaždinskog graditelja Jakova Erbera. Tlocrtna dispozicija govori
i žbukanim ukrasima, trima rizalitima, portalom i balkonom. Dosad izvedenim
povijesne i arhitektonske značajke palače.
This book investigates baroque architecture through the lens of San Gennaro’s miraculously liquefying blood in Naples. This vantage point allows a bracing and thoroughly original rethink of the power ...of baroque relics and reliquaries. It shows how a focus on miracles produces original interpretations of architecture, sanctity and place which will engage architectural historians everywhere. The matter of the baroque miracle extends into a rigorous engagement with natural history, telluric philosophy, new materialism, theory and philosophy. The study will transform our understanding of baroque art and architecture, sanctity and Naples. Bristling with new archival materials and historical insights, this study lifts the baroque from its previous marginalisation to engage fiercely with materiality and potentiality and thus unleash baroque art and architecture as productive and transformational.
