Southgate profiles Cecilia Beaux, a Philadelphia-born painter. Primarily a figure painter, Beaux was equally at home in her Philadelphia studio painting her niece or in the White House painting a ...double portrait of Mrs Theodore Roosevelt and her daughter Ethel. She was noted for her keen eye, her psychological insights, and her finely finished surfaces, so perfect to the naked eye that she was often referred to as a perfectionist. She rarely painted landscapes, except on what were probably special occasions and done not improbably for her own enjoyment rather than as a means of income. One of these scarce landscapes is Half-Tide, Annisquam River. When a fractured hip in 1924 limited her ability to stand before the easel, she turned to writing. Her memoir, Background With Figures, was published in New York in 1930. She died at her home in Gloucester in Sep 1942.
