The paper presents the project entitled Neighbours with a Go-Between that was carried out by the University of Klagenfurt (Austria) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) between 2016 and 2019, ...combining indirect literary translation and intercultural communication. Based on the analysis of student reports, the study shows how the task of collaborative indirect literary translation helped form a temporary community of practice, which in turn enabled the crossing of several types of boundaries and fostered intercultural learning.

The neutral line in a buckle fold, dividing areas of outer-arc extension from areas of inner-arc shortening, is a fundamental concept in structural geology. In the past, folds have been constructed ...kinematically from a given neutral line geometry using the tangential longitudinal strain pattern. In this study, a mechanical finite element model is used to numerically buckle single-layer folds with Newtonian and power-law viscous rheology. Two neutral lines can be distinguished, the incremental neutral line (zero layer-parallel strain rate) and the finite neutral line (zero finite layer-parallel strain). The former develops first and migrates through the layer from the outer towards the inner arc ahead of the latter. Both neutral lines are discontinuous along the fold and terminate either at the bottom or top interface of the layer. For decreasing viscosity ratio between layer and matrix and for decreasing initial amplitude, the neutral lines develop later during folding and, for some cases, no neutral line develops. The dynamical behaviour of the neutral lines is similar for Newtonian and power-law viscous rheology if the viscosity ratio is large, but substantially different for small viscosity ratios. The results are discussed in light of fold-related structures, such as outer-arc-extension structures and inner-arc-shortening structures.

► The neutral lines in Newtonian and power-law viscous single-layer folds are studied. ► Two neutral lines can be defined: the finite and the incremental neutral line. ► During folding, both neutral lines migrate from the outer towards the inner arc. ► None of the two neutral lines is continuous along the fold. ► For small viscosity ratios the neutral lines do not develop.
The investigation of eclogites and a precursor gabbro from the Austroalpine basement domains Koralpe, Saualpe and Pohorje shows that these mafic rocks are similar to oceanic gabbros that were derived ...from a depleted mantle source. The chemical variations of the eclogites are related to differences in the magmatic history of the precursor rocks and to seawater alteration. The trace element composition of the rocks has not changed significantly during the gabbro to eclogite transformation because trace elements are redistributed among the newly formed high-pressure major and accessory minerals. As other recent studies indicate, incompatible trace elements are predominantly hosted in zoisite/clinozoisite (Sr, Pb, U, Th, LREE), apatite (Sr, Pb, REE), phengite (Cs, Rb, Ba), garnet (Y, HREE, Sc), rutile (Ti, Nb, Ta) and zircon (Zr, Hf) at eclogite-facies conditions. Omphacite hosts most of the Li in addition to some Sr and major amounts of Sc and V
. This argues against significant liberation of LILE and LREE during subduction-related dehydration or fluid infiltration of these mafic rocks.
The trace element characteristics of accessory minerals in eclogites help to reconstruct the
P–
T–
t evolution of a subduction complex: U–Pb zircon ages will date the high-pressure event if U–Th characteristics and REE analyses constrain zircon growth to being metamorphic and essentially synchronous with the growth of garnet. Recent studies document that variations in Zr content of rutile grown in the presence of zircon and quartz are mainly attributable to differences in temperature. Zr-in-rutile thermometry of Koralpe, Saualpe and Pohorje eclogites yields temperatures of 700–730 °C (according to Zack et al. Zack, T., Moraes, R., Kronz, A., 2004. Temperature dependence of Zr in rutile: an empirical calibration of a rutile thermometer. Contrib. Mineral. Petrol. 148, 471–488) or between 630–650 °C (according to Watson et al. Watson, E.B., Wark, D.A., Thomas, J.B., 2006. Crystallization thermometers for zircon and rutile. Contrib. Mineral. Petrol. 151, 413–433). No systematic variation in rutile temperatures was observed for matrix rutile and rutile included in garnet, omphacite or kyanite, suggesting that these temperatures represent peak metamorphic conditions and that this part of the Austroalpine basement behaved as a coherent block during subduction.

Ironstones and iron-rich limestones regularly occur as components of time-specific intervals of the Palaeozoic as well as in younger times (Brett et al., 2012--this issue). Silurian sediments ...deposited at high latitudes along the peri-Gondwana border are characterized by black and white limestone and graptolitic shale sequences. Those in the Carnic Alps (southern Austria) additionally contain colourful pink to red limestones and ironstones. Laminated structures such as the (ferruginous)-coatings around skeletal fragments (mostly trilobites and some cephalopods and echinoderms) and stromatolitic features along discontinuity surfaces display dark red, green, white and brownish colours due to the presence of goethite, magnetite, hematite, chamosite, calcite and subordinate apatite. Confocal laser Raman microscopy and complementary microscopic analysis of these ferruginous laminated structures document the presence of carbonaceous matter associated with fossilized microbial structures in the form of stromatolites, filaments and coccoids, suggesting a microbial role in the colouring of the Silurian world of the Carnic Alps. Iron concentrations up to 30× that of matrix and surrounding non-ferruginous rocks suggest blooms of iron microbe activity in response to the time-specific occurrence of chemically charged sea water during global biotic events.
► Some Silurian limestones in the Carnic Alps are red. ► Red colour results from the abundance of Fe oxyhydr-/oxides. ► Iron is present in: fossil coatings, planar laminated structures, ooidal horizons. ► “Bio-ironstones” reveal iron at concentrations 30× greater than surrounding matrix. ► Carbonaceous matter and fossilized microbes suggest biogenicity of red colour.
