Take Herbert Schmatz -- one is tempted to add an "1" to his last name -- a German-Scot, according the catalogue. At more than six feet tall and four feet wide, his Faithful unto Death, "Christianes ...ad Leones!" is as dismal as it is immense. A contemporary critic of the painting, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1888, was already hip to its fundamental artificiality. In her commentary accompanying this item, Alison Smith, the exhibit's principle curator and the catalogue's general editor, reports that this critic "thought the background appeared as if it had been created `by some mechanical process' which destroyed any sense of drama. The victims themselves can be read as studio models arranged in conventional poses." Quite so!

...it is a pleasant float trip, much like the rows that Dodson himself would often take with his young friends, the Liddell sisters, most beloved of whom was Alice. ...the reader is left in the ...discomforting position of, on the one hand, not wanting to jump to conclusions about the possible sexual perversions of one so professionally well-loved but, on the other, feeling nudged by the evidence to do just that. Nagged by feelings of insecurity and doubt, he kept meticulous journals of his daily life, with particular attention to his encounters with his young female friends.
