Advice from the expertson collecting and managing the digital resources that are an increasingly vital part of librarianship!
Managing Digital Resources in Libraries is a practical guide to managing ...library materials in digital formats. Working librarians share their expertise in the acquisition and management of digital resources, addressing questions of licensing, funding, and providing access. The contributors also examine innovative projects and systems, such as the integration of PDA-accessible resources into a library collection and the development of all-digital libraries. You'll also find supplementary reading lists and bibliographies of additional resources, including relevant Web sites.
Addressing the challenges of and barriers to the preservation and dissemination of electronic information, Managing Digital Resources in Libraries explores vital questions, such as:
How are librarians coping with digital resources?
How do they compare and select titles and formats to purchase?
How do they allocate limited fundsto lease or to purchase high-priced electronic titles?
Does consortium membership provide the answer to funding problems, or does it force librarians to pay for content their users neither want nor need?
Is MARC still an appropriate format for cataloging?
How can librarians make themselves familiar with the multitude of available resources? Managing Digital Resources in Libraries will update your working knowledge of:
online resources
open archivestheir uses and their history
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the First Sale Doctrine, and the Fair Use Doctrineand their implications for librarians

The Handbook of Journal Publishing is a comprehensive reference work written by experienced professionals, covering all aspects of journal publishing, both online and in print. Journals are crucial ...to scholarly communication, but changes in recent years in the way journals are produced, financed, and used make this an especially turbulent and challenging time for journal publishers - and for authors, readers, and librarians. The Handbook offers a thorough guide to the journal publishing process, from editing and production through marketing, sales, and fulfilment, with chapters on management, finances, metrics, copyright, and ethical issues. It provides a wealth of practical tools, including checklists, sample documents, worked examples, alternative scenarios, and extensive lists of resources, which readers can use in their day-to-day work. Between them, the authors have been involved in every aspect of journal publishing over several decades and bring to the text their experience working for a wide range of publishers in both the not-for-profit and commercial sectors.
This report is the proceedings of a 2003 symposium on "Electronic Scientific, Technical, and Medical Journal Publishing and Its Implications," which brought together experts in STM publishing, both ...producers and users of these publications, to: (1) identify the recent technical changes in publishing, and other factors, that influence the decisions of journal publishers to produce journals electronically; (2) identify the needs of the scientific, engineering, and medical community as users of journals, whether electronic or printed; (3) discuss the responses of not-for-profit and commercial STM publishers and of other stakeholders in the STM community to the opportunities and challenges posed by the shift to electronic publishing; and (4) examine the spectrum of proposals that has been put forth to respond to the needs of users as the publishing industry shifts to electronic information production and dissemination.

The article analyzes the activities of the leading university libraries of Ukraine and outlines the impact of the digitalization process on them. The article presents an improved system of criteria ...for evaluation and analysis of the libraries’ work. The activities of the G.I. Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, the M. Maksymovych Scientific Library of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the Scientific Library of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. University libraries today are turning into information centers. Modern users’ needs are drivers for the process, and it helps to raise the level of the educational process, as well as improves scientific communication. Digitalization makes it possible to expand the range of services that a library can provide. This process has a positive impact on the number of users. To determine the level of digitalization implementation, we have improved the system of criteria that were developed. All features were grouped into the following criteria: technical, organizational, informational, and legal. The study used the methods of analysis, synthesis and generalization. The study revealed that digitalization has a positive impact on the libraries’ activities, and the analyzed libraries’ activities showed that these institutions are actively developing their communication with users, improving their work and functioning as information centers. Prospects for further research are an empirical study of the libraries’ work, namely, an analysis of user satisfaction with the services provided by the libraries.
The article deals with the digitalization of libraries. The activity of university libraries is analyzed and the influence of the digitalization process on it is outlined. Universities libraries are ...now turning into information centers. This is caused by the needs of modern users. The process of digitalization of university libraries makes it possible to improve the quality of the educational process. Quite often, university libraries are considered mainly as a center called to work with students, although now the audience of users has increased significantly. To determine the implementation of digitalization, the criteria by which the work of libraries was evaluated, were identified. The criteria for analysis were: modern visual design of the site, publication of library news and announcements, representation of electronic resources and publications, as well as the availability of their use, active communication with users and pages in social networks. For the study the library of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the library of Odesa I. Mechnikov National University, the library of Sumy State University were chosen. The choice of the libraries is justified by the fact that all selected universities are among the top 10 universities in Ukraine. The methods of analysis, synthesis and generalization were used in the study. The analysis of the libraries’ activities showed that all the selected libraries are actively implementing digitalization in their work. The desire of the universities to expand the scope of activities and to actively communicate with users is also important. Positive changes in libraries are outlined. Prospects for further research are empirical studies of the effectiveness of libraries.

"Tourism is vital to the economies of most Pacific nations and as such is an important site for the meaningful production of shared and disputed cultural values and practices. This is especially the ...case when tourism intersects with other important arenas for cultural production, both directly and indirectly. Touring Pacific Cultures captures the central importance of tourism to the visual, material and performed cultures of the Pacific region. In this volume, we propose to explore new directions in understanding how culture is defined, produced, experienced and sustained through tourism-related practices across that region. We ask, how is cultural value, ownership, performance and commodification negotiated and experienced in actual lived practice as it moves with people across the Pacific? ‘This collection is a welcome addition to tourism studies, or perhaps we should say post- or para-tourism. The essays bring out many facets and experiences too quickly bundled under a single label and focused exclusively on “destinations” visited by “outsiders”. Tourism, we see here, actively involves many different populations, societies, and economies, a range of local/global/regional engagements that can be both destructive and creative. Western outsiders aren’t the only ones on the move. Unequal power, (neo)colonial exploitation and capitalist commodification are very much part of the picture. But so are desire, adventure, pleasure, cultural reinvention and economic development. The effect, overall, is an attitude of alert, critical ambivalence with respect to a proliferating historical phenomenon. A bumpy and rewarding ride.’ — James Clifford, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Santa Cruz"
