The proposition that good corporate reputation is associated with favorable economic outcomes has enjoyed considerable theoretical and empirical support. Such empirical studies generally have tested ...reputation's impact on economic performance without regard to strategy. This study controls for strategy while using comparison Web site data to examine online retailer reputation's effect upon pricing power. This study finds good reputation positively associated with pricing power only under a focused, differentiation strategy. Thus to benefit from reputation's effect on pricing power, an online retailer first had to pick the right strategy.
The abstract deals with the application of positioning strategies under the conditions of classical market structures. It is discovered that the assumptions of pure competition leave no space for M. ...Porter’s generic cost leadership and differentiation strategies to be applied. The enterprise’s actions, influencing five competitive forces and implementing generic strategies, are reasonable under the conditions of imperfect competition market structures. The game theory models, applied to oligopoly, indicate the close interaction of enterprises and interdependence of their strategic decisions: cost reduction and differentiation strategies not only increase the profit of the enterprise, implementing the strategy, but by affecting market price and residual demand decrease the competitor’s profit.
This study analyses visions of three of the most renowned authors regarding generic strategies, making a comparison among those visions along the time. To perform such comparison, two distinct works ...of each author were selected and then it is pointed out how changes showed up from one moment to another. The selected authors are Ansoff, Miles et al. and Porter, all responsible for three of the most spread typologies for generic strategies. From a chronological point of view, these typologies have been originally proposed between 1965 and 1980 and revisited between 1985 and 1988. Despite time passed from then until today, these typologies are still fully adequate and completely applicable to organizations' present reality. Contributions of this study reside on detailed presentation of each typology's major characteristics, due to detailed and judicious bibliography revision.
This study examines banks' competitive strategies and their relationship with performance in a highly internationalized banking center, Hong Kong. The factor analysis results have, by and large, ...provided support to Porter's three strategy typology. Nevertheless, the empirical findings from the cluster analysis and the subsequent inter-group comparison of performances have cast doubt on Porter's stuck-in-the-middle proposition by demonstrating that banks adopting a multi-strategic approach did outperform other strategically monotonous rivals. While the stuck-in-the-middle proposition is grounded in the premise of inherent inconsistencies for pursuing more than one generic strategy simultaneously, the resource-based view and the present empirical findings hint at the feasibility for well-resourced banks to combine apparently incompatible value creating activities in a synergistic way to achieve integrated flexibility and consequently, a sustainable multi-strategic position. It is suggested that this feasibility very much depends on a bank's organizing and coordinating capabilities that are developed and refined through managerial commitment, learning and experience, as well as a careful assessment of various organizational activities and its inter-relationships within the entire business system.
Resilience is an important research topic in HPC. As computer clusters go to extreme scales, work in this area is necessary to keep these machines reliable. In this work, we introduce a generic ...method to endow iterative algorithms in linear algebra based on sparse matrix-vector products, such as linear system solvers, eigensolvers and similar, with resilience to node failures. This generic method traverses the dependency graph of the variables of the iterative algorithm. If the iterative method exhibits certain properties, it is possible to produce an exact state reconstruction (ESR) algorithm, enabling the recovery of the state of the iterative method in the event of a node failure. This reconstruction is exact, except for small perturbations caused by floating point arithmetic. The generic method exploits redundancy in the matrix-vector product to protect the vector that is the argument of the product. We illustrate the use of this generic approach on three iterative methods: the conjugate gradient method, the BiCGStab method and the Lanczos algorithm. The resulting ESR algorithms enable the reconstruction of their state after a node failure from a few redundantly stored vectors. Unlike previous work in preconditioned conjugate gradient, this generic method produces ESR algorithms that work with general matrices. Consequently, we can no longer assume that local diagonal submatrices used to reconstruct vectors are nonsingular. Thus, we also propose an approach for deriving nonsingular local linear systems for the reconstruction process with reduced condition numbers, based on a communication-avoiding rank-revealing QR factorization with column pivoting.
Internationalization and Tendency of small and medium enterprises to move into international markets are important and one of the essential factors of economic growth and development in the ...developing countries. Several factors affect the process of internationalization of firms has been studied. The main goal of this study is examination relations between business strategies and internationalization of SMEs in ICT industries of Iran. For this goal, we distributed our surveys among 55 international firms of ICT Industries for 70 managers. The results showed that, “low cost strategy”, “differentiation strategy”, “production strategy” and “alliance entry strategy” have positive and significance relationships with “internationalization of SMEs”. But “distribution strategy” and “marketing strategy” have negative and significance relationships with “internationalization of SMEs”.
Porter's generic strategies offered a dominant paradigm (Campbell-Hunt, 2000) 1 on competition for both business practice and academic study. Nowadays, most research organizations in China have to ...face competition issues as most businesses do. Can they find out their own generic strategies like Porter's for their survival and development in competitive system? Based on the approach of Porter's generic strategy, this paper discusses the generic strategy model for research organizations. As shown in the model, along with the two dimensions of horizontal difference and vertical difference of intellectual capital, research organizations may handle 3 generic strategies: focus strategy, platform strategy and combination strategy. Organizations stuck in the middle will fall flat and have to look for new approaches to build up their own competitive advantages in the competitive system. Data from 42 public institutes in China indicates that the three generic strategies could be recognized in practice.
Competitive positioning frameworks help to evaluate an organization's strengths and weaknesses, and make rational choices about the ways in which organizations might best differentiate themselves ...from other providers. This chapter provides an overview of the Value chain, Generic strategy matrix (GSM), Differentiation advantage categories, Blue ocean strategies and Co‐optition/the value net. The Competitive Positioning Spidergram (CPS) brings together key elements from the generic strategy matrix, differentiation categories and blue ocean strategy in two axes. The chapter presents the CPS which illustrates the initial Dyson's competitive positioning relative to other providers, its relation to competitive blue oceans and its subsequent strategic growth trajectory.
