Academic studies related to teaching mother tongue in Turkey started in 1990s and picked up after 2000s. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the post-graduate theses in the field of reading ...education written between the years of 1981-2010 with an integrated view. In the study, the scan with 76 concepts related to reading education was performed in National Thesis Centre. 239 theses, which were determined after the scanning process, were encoded with ternary encoding method.
The purpose of this study is to examine the teacher's role as a "mediator" in helping students write their graduate theses. Sawamoto confirmed that the teacher played the mediator role in primary ...writing classes by applying the reflection method. Building on this study, the current research developed both the curriculum and teaching method for university undergraduate students' writing their graduate theses. This research proves that the teacher played a role of "mediator" in her teaching both university level and primary level. This research applied the reflection method proposed by Sawamoto et al., Sawamoto and Nakamura and Polanyi.
The transformation of coursebook publishing into an industrial giant has brought about variety, choice, and
difficulty of decision making. As coursebook selection profoundly influences the quality of ...foreign language
instruction in Turkey, it is essential to investigate what kind of instruments are used, which method is
followed, what criteria are sought and how relevant parties are affected by its results. Therefore, 54 graduate
theses evaluating EFL coursebooks in the 2001-2013 period were taken from the CoHE Thesis Center. The
documentary data were subjected to content analysis by using the thesis categorisation form for describing
research trends, determining shared evaluative criteria and variable patterns, and providing recommendations
for the future. It was revealed that: (i) studies dealing with EFL coursebook evaluations accelerated after
MoNE’s program changes, (ii) while not even half were designed with mixed methods research, qualitative
theses concentrated on document analysis of coursebooks, (iii) teacher and student views were surveyed
by means of similar Likert scales adapted from previous checklists, (iv) other sample groups like parents,
administrators, authors, and publishers were either underrepresented or not represented at all, (v)
correlational descriptive studies frequently compared teacher and student views against similar categorical
variables, (vi) the need for deeper, experimental, and innovative research was completely overlooked and
multivariate analyses were never employed, (vii) despite their variety, local coursebooks received more focus
but were met with user disapproval due to persistent deficiencies in design, content, methodology, and
skills, (viii) whereas global coursebooks were appreciated for their communicative methodology, integrated
skills instruction, authenticity, and cultural content, and (ix) instead of exploratory research, they tended to
recommend replications with larger or different populations and on different coursebooks.
The aim of this study is to determine what trends Turkish biology education studies indicate. To achieve this aim, the researchers examined online databases of the Higher Education Council and open ...access archives of graduate theses in web sites of Turkish universities. Finally, totally 138 graduate theses were elicited to analyze in regard to following matrix: year, research interest, research methodology and sample. The results show that descriptive study for research interest and survey for research methodology are highly dominant in the graduate theses under investigation. Also, even though learning involves an interaction amongst student, teacher, parent and administrator, there is no study on investigating what the students' parents think about their learning responsibility. It is suggested that further studies should be undertaken to emerge Turkish biology education trend. (Contains 1 figure and 3 tables.)
In this study, we examined 6,834 master's and PhD theses conducted on computer science and engineering between 1994 and 2013 in Turkey. Thesis data were compiled from the YÖK national thesis database ...web portal. We used text mining techniques to extract research concepts and their co-occurrence data from graduate thesis abstracts. Then, we applied social network analysis techniques on the concept co-occurrence networks to visually explore core research concepts, and connections and relationships among them. We showed that text mining and social network analysis techniques together were very effective for knowledge discovery in scientific documents in computer science and engineering domain.
Dissertations and graduate theses are important information sources for researc-hers, particularly for faculty members. In the present article, studies on the bibliographical control of dissertations and graduate theses of Turkey is reviewed briefly. In the next stage, the topic is reviewed with respect to Higher Education Council's (HEC) Documentation Center which owns the widest collection of dis-sertations and graduate theses in the country. The mentioned center should be transformed to National Theses and Dissertation Center (NTDC). Finally, the problems that prevent the center to offer more productive services regarding dis-sertations and theses are discussed and related solutions are presented.
Information services gained a new dimension as a result of the rapid developments in information technologies and Internet. As a consequence of the developments in communication and cooperation facilities in the electronic environment, getting access to informationquickly has become the main objective of information services. Hence, theses that fulfil an important function in the provision of information services in general have gained a new dimension as well: theses that are accessible full-text through Internet have been used in a much more effective way. In order for theses to be made accessible more effectively via Internet in Turkey, the components such as infrastructure, storage, archiving, access management and indexing should be studied. In this article, in three steps, the overall process from preparation of the theses in electronic environments to the submission of them to library, from indexing and archiving of theses at the library to making their full-texts available to users via Internet.
