Cargo routes from Hong Kong to destinations in Asia and Europe are underserved during the July-December peak season, said Peter Hansen, Polar's vice president for Asia. If it could, Polar would look ...at opening freight services from Hong Kong to Taipei, Singapore, Japan and Australia, he said. The Hong Kong government and Cathay say that without greater access to the U.S. market, Cathay can't compete on equal footing."In Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, all have recognized the apparent benefits of an extremely liberal regulatory approach to international all-cargo operations," Hansen said. "Among the countries which still place some limits upon the scope of operations of U.S. all-cargo carriers, Hong Kong fifth- freedom restrictions are the most severe."
M2 PRESSWIRE-4 December 2000-UN: Assembly President calls for renewed commitment to UNRWA (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Following is the text of a statement from the General Assembly President, ...Harri Holkeri (Finland), on the occasion of the pledging conference for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), on 4 December: It is my honour to open this meeting to enable governments to announce their pledges of voluntary contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). We meet at a time of renewed tension and conflict in the Middle East. As we know, the plight of the Palestine refugees, and the uncertainty about their future, is at the heart of that conflict. The UNRWA was established nearly 51 years ago by the General Assembly. It is almost unimaginable that any people should have remained as refugees, living in unresolved circumstances, and very much in need of international assistance, more than 50 years after the international community undertook to find a solution to their plight. In the absence of an agreed solution to the refugee issue, the commitment by the international community to the Palestine refugees must not be forgotten. That commitment finds daily expression through the vital work of UNRWA, which was one of the first humanitarian undertakings of the United Nations. The UNRWA is a lifeline for almost 4 million Palestine refugees.
In the divided West Bank town of Hebron, a heavy exchange of fire erupted after the funeral of a captain in the Palestinian security services who was killed a day earlier by Israeli fire. ...Palestinians opened fire on Israeli troops, and witnesses said an Israeli tank drove into Palestinian-controlled territory. The army said the tank fired a shell, but denied it entered a Palestinian neighbourhood. The Israeli pullout from BEIT JALLA came two days after Israeli tanks and troops entered the West Bank town, following a heavy exchange of fire between Palestinian gunmen there and Gilo, a Jewish neighbourhood built on war-won land and annexed to Jerusalem.
