PurposeThe main aim of this study was to examine the effect of the components of intellectual capital on the organizational performance of SMEs operating in tourism sector at Azad Jammu and Kashmir ...Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachIn this empirical study, survey approach was used and primary data were collected through structured questionnaire. A total of 300 structured questionnaire survey forms were distributed through purposive sampling technique. Two hundred and twenty usable questionnaire survey forms were returned. Six research hypotheses were constructed to achieve the objective of this study. Smart Partial Least Square (PLS) 3 was used to test the proposed research hypotheses.FindingsThe findings showed that two out of six hypotheses were supported. Precisely, customer capital has appeared as one of the most important components of intellectual capital in model. The results showed that the overall intellectual capital has effect on the organizational performance of SMEs. Results shed more light on the effects that the components of intellectual capital have on organizational performance of SMEs, particularly in the context of Pakistan.Research limitations/implicationsThis research is limited to SMEs in tourism sector in Pakistan and the data were gathered through questionnaire which used mostly subjective measures. Subsequently, findings may not be applicable to other industries. The research contributes to the development of intellectual capital literature focused on the organizational performance in the perspective of SMEs in emerging economies. Future research needs to reach beyond the boundaries and understand the effect of intellectual capital on the performance of organizations.Originality/valueThis study extended the knowledge about the prominence of intellectual capital and its effect on the organizational performance of SMEs. Moreover, this study identified the level of existence and measurement of the six components of intellectual capital in SMEs which enables practitioners to develop adequate strategies to better manage it. To author's best knowledge, this study can be the first empirical study which investigates the impact of intellectual capital on the organizational performance of SMEs operating in tourism sector in Pakistan.
The role of intellectual capital as a developmental factor has been constantly growing in both private and public sectors. World literature presents a variety of models for intellectual capital (IC) ...measurement, but so far IC in local government units such as counties (2nd tier local government unit in Poland) has been non-recognized. The purpose of this paper is to fill in this gap. The authors propose an original IC measurement concept developed on the basis of already existing models. The model was created following an analysis of the results of studies performed in local government units (counties) in Poland. The authors are of the opinion that the model can be used for developing IC measurement models for local government units in other countries.

Technology parks are organizations that are supporting innovative entrepreneurial activity cooperating with knowledge-based institutions and using advanced technology. The main purpose of this paper ...is to identify the determinants of intellectual capital in technology parks. Through an analysis of current models for the assessment of intellectual capital, a preposition of a model for Croatian science and technology parks has been made. The main contribution of this paper is an intellectual capital measurement model which can be used in other existing science and technology parks, but also in research centers, entrepreneurial incubators and other entrepreneurship supporting institutions. Using the case study method, the paper identifies components of intellectual capital in a technology park, as well as the gaps between the level of development of each determinant. Data were collected through an interview with representatives of a technology park in Croatia. Results of this study can be used for strategic decision making.

el logro de los resultados organizacionales y así impactar en la sociedad. La
evolución del capital intelectual se muestra como producto de los capitales humano,
estructural y cliente. Además se refuerza la importancia de una articulación
armónica para que la organización cambiante se fortalezca y pueda alcanzar los
niveles necesarios de competitividad y productividad.
This paper presents the first step towards the objective of assessing to what point emergent kinds of capital (such as participatory, innovation and entrepreneurial, to mention some) relate to the ...traditional intellectual capital framework consisting of individual, social and organizational capital. Ways in which the traditional framework should be updated were also investigated. Content analysis on literature of new kinds of capital is performed and analyzed in conjunction with bibliometric methods applied to the intellectual capital field. The study shows that the new kinds of capital are often still based on the traditional pillars of the intellectual capital knowledge domain. Participatory capital publications were found to have the strongest adherence to the traditional framework and entrepreneurial capital, to present the lowest. The study findings suggest that the traditional Intellectual capital framework can and should be updated with notions and elements important for the understanding of the new kinds of capital.
This paper presents two dimensions of intellectual capital (IC): the concept itself and the measurement of IC. In the conceptual section, the importance of IC for competitive advantage and its ...evolution from practice to academia is discussed. The number and diversity of IC models is considered and their points in common are drawn out: namely, three categories, representing the individual, the collectivity and the relationship perspectives. The importance of social capital for the organization’s survival in the current economic environment is explained, a related bibliometric analysis is reported and an IC model acknowledging this component is suggested. The advent of new kinds of capital is explored and a perspective for their integration with the IC model is proposed. In the measurement section, the foundations of IC measurement and different metrics are discussed. A list of factors to be considered for the choice of the ideal set of metrics is presented. The Results-Based Management and Accountability Framework is explained and the evaluation of the Canadian Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Research and Technology knowledge management initiative is given as an example. Recommendations to the reader on how to build their own assessment strategy are made and, in conclusion, future research venues are suggested.
Nowadays knowledge has become a key asset for firms in order to build a sustainable competitive advantage. The environment changes quickly and knowledge, and therefore the management of the ...Intellectual Capital (IC) of the firm, is a critical factor to take advantage of the opportunities. Despite relevant efforts in the field, the emphasis on its study is relatively new. The work is challenging because of the nature of intangible assets based on knowledge and the derived problems involved in their identification and strategic assessment. This paper focuses on experience of the Intellectus Model, analysing the main results obtained during the past 9 years and related to more than 50 applications in different kinds of organization. As a result, a gap between theory and practice is identified and discussed, as well as the main guidelines for the presentation of IC reporting and the proposal of a synthetic index that summarize the main variables which compose different forms of capital.
