ABSTRACT
Introduction
There has been no valid and reliable instrument available to measure the impact of oral health on the quality of life of Slovenian preschool children. The main aim of this study ...was to develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of the first Slovenian instrument assessing Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) preschool children: the ECOHIS-SVN.
Methods
The ECOHIS-SVN was developed using forward-backward translations and with the participation of children aged under six and their parents. The children’s teeth were examined, and parents were asked to complete questionnaires, including the ECOHIS-SVN. The internal consistency of ECOHIS-SVN was evaluated through the calculation of Cronbach’s alpha (α), test-retest reliability with an intra-class-correlation coefficient (ICC), convergent validity with Spearman’s rank correlation (r) and criterion validity with the Mann-Whitney test. The association between the ECOHIS-SVN score and parents’ age, educational level, self-reported oral health and OHIP-SVN14 was estimated using multiple linear regression.
Results
In the study, 255 children participated, with a mean age of 4.8 years (±0.8). The ECOHIS-SVN questionnaire was completed by the parents of all 255 children and re-filled by 71 parents. The results of the total ECOHIS-SVN scale include α=0.85, ICC=0.85, and r=0.6-0.75. A statistically significant association was found between the ECOHIS-SVN and parents’ age and between the ECOHIS-SVN and parents’ OHIP-SVN14 in the whole group and in the subgroup of children with no teeth affected by cavitated caries (dmft=0) (p=0.025, p=0.028), respectively.
Conclusion
ECOHIS-SVN enables further studies to assess the OHRQoL of preschool children in the Slovenian-speaking population.
The purpose of this study was to identify the possibility of unnoticed reduction in salt content of bread as a basic food in the diet of preschool children. The response of children to less salty ...bread and the role of teachers and teacher assistants in the introduction of novelties into children's nutrition ware studied.
Using hedonic sensory evaluation in the case of bread, the perception of salty taste and responses of preschool children to salt reduction were observed. The combination of quantitative and qualitative data analysis obtained from the case study group, composed of 22 preschool children and 66 teachers and teacher assistants, was studied.
The results show that a 30% salt reduction was not registered by the children, while a 50% reduction of the salt content, compared to the original recipe, though noted, was not disruptive. The perception of taste and development of good eating habits at an early age could be influenced by teachers and teacher assistants' verbal and non-verbal communication.
Salt reduction does not significantly affect the rating of satisfaction with the tested product. Educational personnel must be aware of their decisive influence on children's perception of new and less salty products. Such an approach could represent a basis for creating children's eating habits, which will be of particular importance later in their lives. The findings may possibly result in an update of the national nutrition policy.

Poslušajmo, kaj meni o delu z najmlajšimi vaditelj profesor Janez Tome /izjava Janez Tome/.

Language development in toddlerhood & early childhood progresses very quickly, while individual developmental phases are the same irrespective of the language the child is acquiring. The aim of this ...longitudinal study was to examine the characteristics of children's language comprehension & expression, & their pragmatic use of language, as well as to determine the developmental language changes that occur between the ages of three & four. The sample involved 80 randomly selected children, 39 girls & 41 boys, whose average age at the first evaluation was 3,1 years & at the second 4,1 years. The research also involved the mothers & teachers of the children included in the sample. The children's language comprehension & expression were determined using a Language Development Scale, & their pragmatic use of language was assessed through testing their storytelling abilities. Their language competence was also evaluated by their teachers & mothers. The results highlight significant differences between three- & four-year-olds as shown by the Language Development Scale & by their storytelling abilities, as well as in the evaluations by their teachers & mothers. Among three-year-olds, stories at the 2nd level of coherence prevailed, i.e., containing simple descriptions of people, objects or illustrations, whereas four-year-olds most often told stories at the 3rd level, i.e., containing a simple temporal stringing together of events. The child's gender had no significant effect on development between the age of three & four. In interpreting the results, we drew upon the findings of both Slovenian & foreign authors relating to different aspects of language development in toddlers & young children. Figures, References.
