This book brings together an exciting new archive of queer and trans voices from the history of sexual sciences in the German-speaking world. A new language to express possibilities of gender and ...sexuality emerged at the turn of the twentieth century, from Sigmund Freud’s theories of homosexuality in Vienna to Magnus Hirschfeld’s “third sex” in Berlin. Together, they provided a language of sex and sexuality that is still recognizable today. Queer Livability: German Sexual Sciences and Life Writing shows that individual voices of trans and queer writers had a significant impact on the production of knowledge about gender and sexuality during this time and introduces lesser known texts to a new readership. It shows the remarkable power of queer life writing in imagining and creating the possibilities of a livable life in the face of restrictive legal, medical, and social frameworks. Queer Livability: German Sexual Sciences and Life Writing will be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about LGBTQ+ history and literature. It also provides a fascinating insight into the historical roots for our thinking about gender and sexuality today. The book will be of relevance to an academic readership of students and faculty in German studies, literary studies, European history, and the interdisciplinary fields of gender and sexuality studies, medical humanities, and the history of sexuality.
Chile is not a socially and culturally homogeneous country, and various ethnic groups coexist within its territory, including the Aymara people. Recognizing that this indigenous people is a group ...with their own traditions, not shared by the majority of the population and also has been part of the socio-historical processes lived in the regions of Northern Chile, the authors consider legitimate to ask whether the Christian ethos, foundation of the western ideas, acquired singular characteristics in the Aymara case or if what the authors observe in the mythology and religiosity of this people, currently provides a moral context and an ideology which guides the sexual practices of its population. The purpose of this article is to recover the ideas, meanings and interpretations that three generations of Aymara women give to sexuality within their own world views, political and economic social contexts, and gender system, as well as to see how, through their practices, these characteristics are expressed and articulated.
What happens when the human brain, which evolved over eons,
collides with twenty-first-century technology? Machines can now
push psychological buttons, stimulating and sometimes exploiting
the ways ...people make friends, gossip with neighbors, and grow
intimate with lovers. Sex robots present the humanoid face of this
technological revolution-yet although it is easy to gawk at their
uncanniness, more familiar technologies based in artificial
intelligence and virtual reality are insinuating themselves into
human interactions. Digital lovers, virtual friends, and
algorithmic matchmakers help us manage our feelings in a world of
cognitive overload. Will these machines, fueled by masses of user
data and powered by algorithms that learn all the time, transform
the quality of human life? Artificial Intimacy offers an
innovative perspective on the possibilities of the present and near
future. The evolutionary biologist Rob Brooks explores the latest
research on intimacy and desire to consider the interaction of new
technologies and fundamental human behaviors. He details how
existing artificial intelligences can already learn and exploit
human social needs-and are getting better at what they do. Brooks
combines an understanding of core human traits from evolutionary
biology with analysis of how cultural, economic, and technological
contexts shape the ways people express them. Beyond the technology,
he asks what the implications of artificial intimacy will be for
how we understand ourselves.
A feminist debate is still raging in sexualities literature and popular culture: is sex dangerous or empowering for women and other marginalized people? This dissertation applies an ...agency-within-constraint framework to examine actors’ capacity to practice sexual agency within oppressive institutions or interactions. To do this, I use electronic and in-person sexual communications to examine how adolescents and adults, belonging to different sex communities, act on their sexual needs and desires while navigating systems of constraint. This dissertation utilizes radical and liberal feminist frameworks to critique violence and male dominance while treating women and girls as sexual agents. First, I find that the ability to successfully negotiate sex is intimately tied to the sexual scripts and communities that a person is embedded in. Importantly, sexual agency can grow through exposure to new scripts. Next, I find that sexual coercion and consent can exist simultaneously within sexual interactions. I argue that consenting to sex, even unwanted sex, is an expression of sexual agency. Finally, I find that cybercommunications can put young people at risk for sexual harassment and violence but also facilitate sexual learning and agency. Young people develop their sexual identities, in part, through low-risk, consensual sharing of sexual content. These findings suggest that victimization and agency are not mutually exclusive and have important implications for theory and advocacy. Monolithic definitions of consent and violence leave room for dire misinterpretations of “nonnormative” sexual practices and erase the nuances common in everyday sexual interactions.
Sexual violence is a worldwide issue that has received increased attention since the #MeToo movement and news coverage of large sex trafficking circles. Although there have been attempts by programs ...targeting sexual violence to reduce victimization, sexual violence remains a large societal issue. While empathy and sexual arousal do not irrevocably prevent or lead to sexual aggression, they are significant factors. The present research investigated the effects of empathy and sexual arousal as risk and protective factors of sexually violent perpetrators on men’s condoning of sexually violent behaviors. Using MTurk, this research included a sample of 196 men to test the hypotheses that men with higher empathy will condone less sexually violent behaviors than those men with low empathy and, secondly, that men in the no sexual arousal condition will condone less sexually violent behaviors than those men in the sexual arousal condition. Lastly, this research answered the question: How do empathy and sexual arousal interact to affect condoning of sexually violent behaviors?
