This book discusses the role of cultural practices and policy for sustainable development in West Africa across different artistic disciplines, including performance, video, theatre, community arts ...and cultural heritage. Based on ethnographic field research in local communities, the book presents findings on current debates of cultural sustainability in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Benin. It provides a unique perspective connecting cultural studies, conflict studies and practical peacebuilding approaches through the arts. The first part pays particular attention to aspects of social cohesion and the circumstances of internally displaced persons e. g. caused by the Boko Haram insurgency in Northeast Nigeria. The second part focuses on cultural policy issues and challenges in the context of sustainable development, investigating participatory approaches and bottom-up processes, the role of governments and civil society, as well as performing arts organizations and universities in policy making and implementation processes. Performing Sustainability in West Africa presents research results and new methods on the role of artistic and cultural practices in conflict situations as well as current debates in cultural policy for researchers, academics, NGOs and students in cultural studies, sustainable development studies and African studies.
Koncept kompaktnega mesta se je pojavil konec 20. st. kot ena od rešitev za trajnostni razvoj mest. Koncept razvoja poudarja mestno gostoto, hkrati pa preprečuje širjenje mest navzven. Pomembna je ...mešana raba zemljišč, večja gostota poselitve (intenziviranje mesta) ter čim boljša dostopnost za vse prebivalstvo, pri čemer je najpomembnejši razvoj javnega prometnega sistema. Koncept prinaša prednosti, a tudi slabosti, saj prevelika gostota vpliva na kakovost življenja v mestu.

This paper investigates the characteristics of functionally derelict areas in Slovenia, criteria for their identification, typology and arguments for further monitoring, and regular updating of this ...new spatial and data layer. Both specifying the precise location and knowledge of characteristics of derelict areas, i.e. brownfields, are an important step towards sustainable planning and placement of activities. In 2017, we recorded 1081 functionally derelict areas in Slovenia in a total area of 3423 ha, with a prevalence of areas of industrial activities.
Sustainable development in karst areas should be adapted to its specificities and take into account its vulnerability. The assessment of the development potential and management of karst areas is of ...great importance in Slovenia. This book presents the analyses of the impact of landscape features on the land use and sustainable development in a marginal Slovenian karst landscape ‒ Bela krajina. In order to draw attention to the combination of social perspectives with natural conditions for an integrative view of the karst landscapes, three approaches were used: 1. assessment of the degree of human disturbance to the karst landscape, 2. analyses of land use dynamics, and 3. quantitative and qualitative analyses of the sustainable development of Bela krajina. Karst landscape features affect sustainable development of the study region both positively and negatively. According to local stakeholders the positive effects are mainly connected with tourism, and the negative effects are mainly connected with hampered agriculture. The main message is that karst landscape features should not only be seen as limiting factors, but also for their development potential.

Zlasti velik sezonski obisk je v doživljajsko pestrih predelih in ker ...pride večina turistov z lastnim prevozom, se negativni učinki prometa zgoščujejo. Pogosto prihaja do konfliktov med lokalnim prebivalstvom in turisti, hkrati se zmanjša tudi doživljajska pestrost teh območij, kar prispeva k zmanjšani ekonomski vrednosti, saj gre za turistična območja. Prispevek govori o načrtovanih in izvedenih projektih umirjanja prometa v slovenskem delu Julijskih Alp, s katerimi želijo lokalni deležniki zmanjšati negativne učinke prometa na gorsko naravo in nezadovoljstvo zaradi prometne gneče.
V članku je predstavljena raziskava predvidenih posledic odločitve bangladeške vlade, da strojarne v Hazaribaghu preseli iz Dake, bangladeškega glavnega mesta. Usnjarska industrija ima že od zgodnje ...industrializacije pomembno vlogo v gospodarstvu države. V Daki je ta industrija nakopičena na območju Hazaribagha v jugozahodnem predelu mesta, ki je stičišče novega in starega dela mesta. Uporaba tehnologije slabe kakovosti, neustrezno ravnanje z industrijskimi odpadki in pomanjkanje naprav za obdelavo odpadkov so uničili ekologijo Hazaribagha in močno obremenili okolico. Selitev strojarn iz Hazaribagha in sanacija tega območja ponujata edinstveno priložnost za trajnostno mestno prenovo v državi. Prenova degradiranega območja v Hazaribaghu lahko služi kot model trajnostnih sosesk 21. stoletja, ki vključujejo vse sodobne objekte in okolju prijazne sestavine, potrebne za zdravo bivanje. V raziskavi avtorja analizirata potencial soseske Hazaribagh, da kot primer načrtovanega trajnostnega območja, ki ga ne zaznamuje močna onesnaženost, po kateri ta lokacija trenutno slovi, postane zgled za vse mesto.
The book presents urban agriculture as an innovative and effective tool for achieving wider social effects regarding the participation in decision-making processes, social inclusion, and sustainable ...urban development. Despite the many social and economic benefits, this kind of agriculture has still not gotten the proper support at the international and national political levels. In Slovenia, there are no clear guidelines and standards for its promotion, protection and management. This is why one of the purposes of this book is to encourage the first step towards bridging the gap between the national and local levels. The overview of good urban agriculture practices in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and North America attests that the wider social effects are most often ensured by community, social, educational, and therapeutic gardens that bring together many diverse stakeholders. The book illustrates how urban agriculture, when designed in a collaborative and inclusive manner, can result in improved public services, boost active citizenship, and contribute to a better urban structure and image.
