To stand up against Nazi ideas of biologized “ethnicity” and antisemitism required a heroic disposition in individuals who did not allow themselves to have their basic humanity destroyed by such ...ideologies, even as the latter were backed by formidable political and religious power and sweepingly popular beliefs. The men and women presented in the first part of the book have already been recognised as Righteous Among Nations for their brave humanitarian acts during WWII, a title bestowed by the Yad Vashem World Center for Holocaust Research, Education, Documentation and Commemoration. Part Two brings the stories about people who were also saving Jews that were not recognised as Righteous yet, but some among them are candidates.

The effects of globalization influence corporate life and entrepreneurial culture and the implications are felt, directly or indirectly, by every world citizen. This book examines our inevitable ...relationship with business and the drives behind the way we do business. In a nutshell: `me and mine` or `thee and thine`. The former ends up in a cul-de-sac of individual and collective emptiness, alienation and self-destruction. The latter involves a transformation in the way we do business and leads to such benefits as collaboration, mutual enrichment and our livelihood being an integral part of our quest for a meaningful and fulfilling life. Spirituality is presented in this book as a possibility for providing a non-denominational inspiration and framework - both in theory and practice - for bringing about an inner transformation resulting in a new paradigm for business and management. The book is the result of joint work and many years of mutual cooperation between researchers from Slovenia and Croatia. It was made as part of the transboundary project ŽIVO! Življenje – voda! (Life ...– Water!) (IPA CBC SI-HR 2007-2013), which involved the participation of authors from project partner institutions as well as invited authors who are familiar with the characteristics of the karst area of Northern Istria and the conditions there relating to drinking water supply. The monograph presents the natural features of Northern Istria, the karst and karst phenomena, karst hydrogeology, ecology and microbiology, and highlights in particular the vulnerability of the karst to various human activities. The main focus of attention is on karst water sources. In assessing their characteristics we used available knowledge of karst water on both sides of the border and supplemented it with new research on the transboundary area in question, which was based on field measurements and sampling, and chemical, microbiological and biological analysis of water. The collected findings form the basis for planning more effective monitoring of the quality of karst water sources, their protection and consequently the improvement of their quality.
The monograph Drobci ledenodobnega okolja (“Fragments of Ice Age environments”) presents a compilation of seventeen chapters in which experts from different scientific fields discuss specific topics ...related to the Ice Age in Europe. Ten of them are devoted to the presentation, analysis and interpretation of palaeontological data concerning various large mammal species ranging from mastodon and mammoth to the cave hyena, ibex, cave lion and bears, with the emphasis being placed on the cave bear. Several chapters address the topic of Last Glacial climatic conditions in the Southeastern Alps by studying fossil micromammal and palaeobotanical remains as well as geoarchaeologiocal data. A special article is devoted to a comprehensive review of previous analysis of the bone flute from Divje babe I, but includes also new musicological research findings on the extraordinary technical capabilities of this oldest musical instrument. The concluding chapter presents a study of old manuscripts and printed sources, providing some interesting insights into the discovery of one of the most significant palaeontological sites in Slovenia - the cave of Mokriška jama. The monograph is dedicated to the anniversary of the prominent researcher of the Slovenian Palaeolithic - Ivan Turk. His work, main achievements and selected bibliography are briefly presented in the introductory chapter.
Snow season 2012/13 in SloveniaSlovenia is also among the countries which are endangered by avalanches. They cause on a yearly average 1–2 victims, mainly in the highlands. Once, the victims were ...mostly locals, but within the last decades, it is now predominantly mountaineers. To avoid avalanche accidents, prevention measurements are very important. Their consistent part is also the flashback of each snow season. Since there is no avalanche service in Slovenia - its annual task is also the preparation of such an overview, we decided do it within the frame of a project NH-WF/Natural Hazards without Frontiers. In this, between years 2012 and 2014, we regularly prepared and published an experimental local avalanche bulletin for Middle Karavanks (northern Slovenia). Along with the work on this bulletin, we realized, how important cooperation is between the different stakeholders within the field of avalanche protection. This edition is the first complete overview of avalanche events and incidents in the snow season – from a weather review, through all the overall characteristics of snow seasons and avalanche events, as well as a methodically unified analysis of all fatal incidents. We added, at the end, a reflection about the season, made by an avalanche practitioner and a short presentation of a NH-WF project.

Selected Examples of Managing Cultural Heritage AreasCultural heritage can make an important contribution to development, especially if it is conscientiously managed and if one is aware of all of its ...development potentials. Attention was drawn to this in the CHERPLAN project with the volumes Upravljanje območij s kulturno dediščino (Managing Cultural Heritage Areas) and Managing Cultural Heritage Sites in Southeastern Europe~these two related books are now complemented by a third volume that discusses selected examples of managing cultural heritage areas. Because the project was intended to promote the development of areas in southeast Europe, we first present heritage from this area on the UNESCO World Heritage List, then various systems of protecting cultural heritage, followed by intergovernmental efforts to protect cultural heritage in southeast Europe. Regarding the content, we addressed the multifunctional role of cultural heritage, and due to specific circumstances in the past two decades we have also highlighted the damage caused to cultural heritage by military conflicts. The following individual examples of cultural heritage management are discussed: Kotor, Gamzigrad, the Stari Grad Plain, Ohrid, the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, Lake Neusiedl, and the Semmering Railway, and outside the southeast Europe program area also Bilbao and the Rhaetian Railway.
