Biofloc technology (BFT) has beneficial effects in aquaculture management, including water quality, feeding and disease control. Application of BFT in aquaculture offers a solution to avoid the ...environmental impact of high nutrient discharges and to reduce the use of artificial feed. In BFT, excess of nutrients in aquaculture systems are converted into microbial biomass, which can be consumed by the cultured animals as a food source. This technology, to a certain extent, has also the capacity to control pathogens in aquaculture. A review of the previous studies demonstrated that the benefits of BFT are also evident in the freshwater tilapia culture to include improved production through lower feed conversion rate, better nutrition, optimum water quality and health. The basic principles and mechanisms of the BFT are already established, however, this technology needs fine-tuning and its implementation needs further intensive research in order to make this technology a major feature of future sustainable freshwater tilapia aquaculture.
Production of orchid seedlings often requires complex laboratory infrastructure; therefore, a simple and low-cost method would be of general benefit to many small-scale producers and orchid ...enthusiasts. This article describes a protocol for preparing culture media using a domestic microwave oven. Two alternative culture media were evaluated for a range of factors, including the duration of boiling, the efficacy of antiseptics applied to jars and media, the concentration of the antiseptic hydrogen peroxide required for sterilization, and the growth of Oncidium cebolleta and Phalaenopsis amabilis plantlets in media prepared using a microwave oven compared with conventionally autoclaved media. It was found that addition of 2 mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide (Peridrol® solution) per liter of culture medium, an 8-min boiling time in the microwave oven, and 8 g/L agar were sufficient to produce solidified culture media, which facilitated orchard seed germination and growth without contamination. Furthermore, the microwaved media exhibited superior plantlet growth to autoclaved media.
Nightlife, the night-time economy and 'alternative' culture have been a source of academic contestation over recent years, with differing views as to the direction and meaning of the contemporary ...drift of law and policy that serve to regulate this area of social and cultural life. Further, there have so far been few attempts to theorise the nature of change. This article aims to highlight some key theoretical underpinnings that can facilitate an understanding of the kinds of regulatory innovation that pervade nightlife and alternative cultural forms. Using two case studies - free or alternative festivals and Form 696 - it specifically draws on the concepts of disciplinary power and juridification as a way of theorising both the acceleration of regulatory forms and its impact on the production of alternative culture.

The shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis is considered a suitable species for culture in the Patos Lagoon estuary, southern Brazil, where its catch has been decreasing in the last few years. Considering ...the potential of estuarine areas for shrimp farming, the application of low-cost structures to culture shrimp, such as the pen enclosures, is being proposed as an alternative source of income for artisanal fishermen and farmers living near Patos Lagoon. From an economical standpoint, these alternative systems present several advantages over the traditional pond-based culture systems since land, water pumping and artificial aerations are not required, high natural productivity is available and inexpensive materials are employed in the construction of grow-out structures. This paper reviews the farming of F. paulensis in the pen enclosures as an alternative to the artisanal fishing communities of the Patos Lagoon estuary. Particular emphases are placed on the development of culture systems, social and environmental impacts, constraints and perspectives.
Stott's Abalone Postlarval Production System (SAPPS) was developed to replace livefood as the primary means of settling and growing out abalone seed. Culture plates are initially sprayed with ...microalgal powder/agar gel solution to induce larval settlement. Abalone seed are then raised on an artificial diet/agar gel solution which is sprayed directly onto the culture plates. This study was conducted to test SAPPS on a commercial scale against the diatom biofilm method and two further trials were conducted to investigate the optimum feeding frequency and agar concentration for SAPPS. A total of 100,000 larval
Haliotis diversicolor aquatilis were induced to settle onto 90 mucus conditioned commercial rearing plates (5 racks×18 plates each) in 1500-l tanks to test two treatments; diatom biofilm method and SAPPS. The trial was conducted over a 6-week period and the temperature averaged 24.2±1.0 °C. Settlement was similar on all plates in the two treatments. The settlement rate per plate was 17,820±8460 for the diatom biofilm and 17,280±6390 for SAPPS. The postlarval growth rate on the SAPPS plates was over 50% higher than the growth rate on the diatom plates. The final length of postlarvae was significantly higher (
p<0.05) on SAPPS plates (3281±573 μm) than on diatom biofilm plates (2231±314 μm). Furthermore, the survival of postlarvae was also five times higher on SAPPS (51.7%) compared with diatom biofilm (10.6%). SAPPS plates were heavily colonized by marine bacteria which may have acted as a food source for early postlarvae and assisted in the breakdown of polysaccharides. The whole body protein of juveniles was 17.2% in SAPPS compared to 13.3% in diatom biofilm which may suggest that artificial diet was a more balanced and complete nutrient source than diatom biofilm. Smaller scale trials were conducted over 25 days to determine optimum concentration of agar (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mg/ml) and also to determine specific feed frequency (daily, every second day and every third day). There was no significant difference (
p>0.05) in survival rate in both trials. However, the growth rate of postlarvae at 2.5 mg/ml agar was significantly lower than the other treatments and the leaching rate (% weight loss of food) was double that of agar concentrations 5.0–10.0 mg/ml. Growth rate was highest (
p<0.05) in the feed frequency experiment for postlarvae fed daily and lowest for those fed every third day. The results suggested that agar concentration was optimal at between 5.0 and 10.0 mg/ml with plates being sprayed daily. SAPPS has potential to be used in industry depending on the development of a mechanized, cost-efficient system for spraying the plates.

An experimental culture system was developed as an alternative to diatom biofilms for settling larval abalone and on-growing the resulting post-larvae. The system is designed to allow artificial ...micro-particulate food to be sprayed (continuously until abalone are capable of feeding on seaweed) onto hard corrugate plastic plates, using agar as a fixative. Two trials were conducted to test substances that could be utilized to improve the settlement and metamorphosis rate of larval
Haliotis discus discus when using the above experimental system. In trial 1, plates were sprayed with a mixture containing 1% agar and one of the following: natural diatom powder,
Spirulina powder,
Chlorella powder and two different concentrations of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), each with and without antibiotics. The negative control was a clean plastic plate without any additives and the positive control was plastic plates covered with a living natural diatom biofilm. There was no significant difference in the final metamorphosis rate of larvae induced to settle on the three micro-algal powders and the positive control (25.8–35.8%). However, these treatments had a significantly higher larval metamorphosis rate when compared to the negative control and the GABA treatments (1.7–7.5%). GABA did not induce metamorphosis of larvae at a significantly higher rate than the negative control, regardless of whether antibiotics were used or not. In trial 2, the effect of using both algal powders and mucus was tested to determine settlement and metamorphosis rates of larval abalone. Combining the effects of mucus and micro-algal powders or the positive control and mucus resulted in a final larval settlement rate of 80.8–89.2% and metamorphosis rate of 73.3–87.5%. This was significantly higher than the treatments that only incorporated micro-algal powder or the positive control, having an attachment rate of 20.8–41.7% and a total metamorphosis rate of only 3.3–28.3%. There is potential to use micro-algal powder as a substitute to living diatoms, to act as a settlement cue for larval
H. discus discus. Abalone mucus should also be used in addition to micro-algal powders to increase the settlement rate of larvae and also ensure a high rate of metamorphosis.
