A new abalone postlarval culture system, Stotts abalone postlarval production system (SAPPS), is being developed as an alternative method for settling larvae and on-growing postlarval abalone. SAPPS ...was tested in trial 1 using two commercially available artificial diets, Adam and Amos (Adam; supplied by Adam and Amos, Mt Barker, SA, Australia) and Cosmo (Cos; supplied by Cosmo, Matsuyama, Japan), against the diatom biofilm method (Diatom). In trial 2, SAPPS was tested against the previous production system (PPS, used by Stott at aL 2002). Larvae were induced to metamorphose and the resulting postlarvae were on-grown in 10-L flow-through tanks for 28 days in their respective treatments. The final survival of postlarvae was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the SAPPS-Cos group (56.7 +- 11.15%) than in the Diatom (9.4 +- 2.7%) and SAPPS-Adam groups (8.5 +- 1.1%). The final length of postlarvae in SAPPS-Cos (1065 +- 73 Microm) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those in the other two treatments (average of 841-883 Microm). In trial 2 the metamorphosis rate was improved by using Spirulina platensis. The final length of postlarvae in SAPPS (1449-1471 Microm) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than PPS (1065-1075 Microm) and Diatom (993 Microm). There is potential for SAPPS to be used as an alternative to the current diatom method in the culture of postlarval abalone.

Book Chapter
This chapter examines the sonic landscapes of Athens, Georgia, which was an epicenter for cutting edge music from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, leading the way for college rock and other ...independent music scenes. The transformation of this small Southern college town into a new kind of bohemia and nationally and internationally recognized site of alternative culture is covered through the lens of several important Athens bands. These include the B-52’s, Pylon, and R.E.M. The chapter also examines related elements of the emerging scene, such as drag and pop art.
An investigation of the politics of nature & sport contends that, despite feminism's influence on sociology of sport discourses, feminist perspectives have been all but silent on environmental ...issues. In view of the environmental crisis, feminist approaches to sport are criticized for disregarding ecological feminist discourses, arguing that only a synthesis of ecological & feminist theories can be transformative. The socioecological ethical approach to sport is criticized for its androcentricity & failure to recognize the significance of the double oppression of women & nature. Further, it is argued that nature-based sports may provide space not only for the reaffirmation of hegemonic masculinities, but also for alternative gender identities & countercultures that may benefit nature. Evidence is presented to suggest that forms of nature-based sports & alternative movements may act as catalysts for both an individual & collective rethinking of human relations with nature. A call is made for a linkage of ecological & feminist approaches that acknowledges plurivocal discourses & is grounded in interpretive research. 70 References. Adapted from the source document.

Book Chapter
This chapter focuses on Hausprojekte, or “living projects.” Hausprojekte are the most prolific category of counterpreservation, in terms of number of examples. They embrace and deploy architectural ...decay for sociopolitical goals related to affordable housing, diversity, and personal experimentation. In this chapter, Hausprojekte are examined through the focused discussion of two case studies: the KA 86 and Tuntenhaus (both in the same building), and the Køpi. It considers both Hausprojekte in the plural—as a broad social movement that illuminates important aspects of counterpreservation—and the singularity of each case study. The chapter also aims to highlight the roles these case studies play in shaping urban spaces and debates.
Cultural Centers Sandler, Daniela
Counterpreservation,

Book Chapter
This chapter focuses on independent, nonprofit cultural and art centers. Cultural centers such as the Haus Schwarzenberg—the primary focus of this chapter—as well as Schokoladen and the defunct ...Tacheles may look similar to Hausprojekte at first glance, with a juxtaposition of graffiti and posters over eroded walls, odd sculptures, architectural fragments, grime, and overgrown ivy. However, these spaces are composed with more forethought and coordination, and undergo significant (but selective) repairs, refurbishment, and even preservation measures. These cultural centers also articulate the meaning of their dilapidation clearly and self-consciously in pamphlets, websites, and interviews. They demonstrate that counterpreservation can be premeditated and self-reflective, and not just an ad hoc, opportunistic tactic.
Ethnographic studies and survey research are increasingly showing that the Internet has been tightly integrated into the situated social practices of its users. Cyberspace presents a classic ...environment for filling in gaps through and by virtue of one's personal psychological repertoire. This is where imagination and imagery are played out. Imagination entails the general cognitive capacity of human beings to fantasize about the nature of others, both people and environments or objects, through ideas, narratives, concepts, explanations, assumptions and beliefs. Imagery refers to the visual representation of imagined objects -- namely, assigning them forms. In the context of online communication the role of imagination in generating emotions in cyberspace is even greater than in actual-space. The factual information we have about an online partner is usually more limited than our knowledge an offline partner and our imagination must fill in the gap. The present article tried to explain the ways in which the Romanians make use of blogs to construct an alternative space devoted to literary life. On the basis of official Romanian blogs ranking the present article will analyze a sample of ten culturally/literary personal blogs in order to identify the limits and perspectives offered by this alternative Agora.
