Cities in socialist Czechoslovakia were meant to constitute the setting for an ideal socialist society. The dogmatic embracement of this objective by the ruling Communist Party eventuated in complete ...intolerance towards any manifestation of free-thinking of alleged opposition to socialism. Starting in the 1960s, part od Czechoslovak youth were inspired by the Western countercultural hippie movement and the Beat generation, as well as by punk subculture beginning in the 1970s. These people openly displayed their alienation from the official cultury by disrupting the established societal standards of appearance, behaviour, and leisure activities.

Towards the end of the momentous edition ofPicture Postof 4 January 1941, after the arguments for reform in areas such as employment, health, education and housing, the writer and broadcaster J. B. ...Priestley turned his attention to the quality of life.²Picture Postwas perhaps the most popular wartime forum for discussion of ‘reconstruction’, and its themes showed a marked convergence with sentiments expressed in the labour movement.³ Though not itself an organ of the movement, many of its writers were people of progressive views. The 4 January edition, entitled ‘A Plan For Britain’, included contributions from A.
With the popularity of celebrity chefs, television cooking shows, gastronomic holidays and food festivals, it is clear that people's engagement with food is developing into a significant social ...phenomena. People are searching for ways to secure sustainable and ethical foods and are open to learning new possibilities. This article provides a case study analysis of the work of Stuart Gifford, a long-term sustainability advocate, restaurateur and urban activist. Gifford currently is co-owner of Sarah's Sister's Sustainable Café. This restaurant features sustainability in the design principles and management of the enterprise. Gifford's commitment to sustainability advocacy and teaching permeates not only the business but is also a life commitment as he undertakes initiatives such as fostering an external eco-market, creating sustainability events associated with a major metropolitan festival, community activism and political advocacy. This article analyses the import of Gifford's efforts. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this article presents rich insights into the ways in which running a sustainable café can be read as a cultural pedagogy. Employing Giroux's theory of culture as pedagogy, Gifford's work through Sarah's Sister's is considered as an alternative cultural pedagogy intended to counter the destructive pedagogy of neoliberalism and its attendant cultural values.
Factors affecting micropropagation efficiency of 32 selections of Rubus, including the pre-treatment and initiation culture stages, were investigated. Chilling at 4°C for 6 weeks as a pre-treatment ...significantly promoted in vitro initiation culture; up to 65% of initiation cultures post chilling were successful. The cytokinin 6-benzyladenine (BA) was the most effective of the three tested for promotion of multiple shoot development in culture, with an average of three to seven shoots or plantlets developed from each single node. Alternating the concentration of BA between 4.44 and 13.31 μM from sub-culture to sub-culture improved recalcitrant Rubus micropropagation, and reduced the problems associated with long-term culture in the presence of high concentrations of BA. Reduction of the strength of macro- and micro-elements in the basal medium from half to one-third, with addition of 0.49 μM indole-3-butyric acid and 0.05% activated charcoal, and placing the cultures under reduced light intensity (17 μmol m⁻² s⁻¹), was found to alleviate chlorosis and improve micropropagation with high quality Rubus plantlets. Response to in vitro culture differed greatly and consequently different methods of micropropagation were required by different genotypes. From these selections, three types of micropropagation including micro-cutting, micro-shoots and multi-shoots were observed, and their efficiency was characterized.
Recently quite a few scholars and social critics argue that a sort of nomadic culture reappears as communication and transportation technologies advance. Korea is arguably one of the countries which ...have highly-developed communication and transportation systems in the world. This paper discusses nomadism in the modern (or post-modern) context and analyzes major arguments empirically with the Korean case. A thesis of the rebirth of nomadism is supported by the analysis. The strong propensity to movement and actual mobility was found. The mobility seems to be unfolded in both real and cyber spaces. The strong inclination to change is also confirmed. The absolute majority of Koreans favor change or at least do not resist it. Evidence for the deconstruction of borders is also found. The data indicate that a lot of Koreans are quite liberal in sex life as well as eating patterns. Cyber-tribalism, a part of the nomadism, was also found. The paper concludes that post-modern nomadism became one of the determining factors in culture in Korea.
The recent globalization in Korea was forced by the 1997 economic crisis and subsequent IMF-mandated neoliberal reform, which has prompted patriotism, concern with national identity and nationalism. ...Nationalism has also been promoted by the ‘sunshine’ policy toward North Korea. The rise of nationalism has provided young Koreans with an opportunity to take a critical look at imported Western culture as well as their own indigenous culture. At the same time they have acquired more cultural capital than older Koreans and tend to consume popular culture according to their own tastes and considering its quality. The neoliberal reform has also made the Korean culture industry and cultural markets bigger and more open, so that not only Korean consumers have more choices, but also Korean cultural products become more visible in East Asian markets, creating ‘Korean wave.’ Other countries in this region have followed suit, and exchange of cultural products among them has surged dramatically, suggesting an East Asian Popular Culture in the Making. And it can be a possible candidate for an alternative globalization which refers to the flow from the peripheral or non-Western to the West.
The method of the alternate culture and animal passage was introduced in the study of human glioma. For animal passage the hereditary asplenicathymic (lasat) mice were used as a carrier. Because the ...lasat mice have practically no cellular and only little humoral immunity, the rate of tumor take was expected to be raised, and successful results were obtained. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical (GFA protein) studies were also done. The overgrowth of stromal elements in reculture of tumors in lasat mice was less vigorous than in athymic nude mice. After four passages through lasat mice, an established well differentiated cell nests, and this alternate culture and animal passage suggested to enhance the differentiation and growth capacity. After three passages through lasat mice, the tumor line, KNS-42-L, produced tumors also in athymic nude mice and their histological features were essentially the same as those in lasat mice, and hence the lasat mice could be saved.
