On the outskirts of west Belfast in Northern Ireland, and in the shadow of the Black Mountain, is situated the predominantly Catholic community of Andersonstown. Between November 1971 and March 1972 ...this small area of land, which is just two miles long by one mile deep, became the scene of many gun-battles between the men of 9(Plassey) Battery, Royal Artillery and 1st Battalion Belfast Brigade, Irish Republican Army. This book is a record of the violent clashes which took place on an almost daily basis on housing estates which looked no different than those found on mainland Britain.
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by English Heritage to carry out archaeological recording of exposed and undercut foundations at Hurst Castle, Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire. The castle is a Scheduled ...Monument (NHLE no. 1015699) comprising a mid-16th - 19th century coastal artillery fortress (Device Fort) built on a shingle spit projecting c.2.5 km into the western end of the Solent. Due to the exposed coastal location of the Castle, erosion from wave action and longshore drift activity has gradually uncovered and undercut the concrete foundations of the mid-19th century east and west casemented wings in two places causing consequent structural movement within the building. An urgent programme of underpinning work was therefore required to reinforce the exposed and undercut foundations in conjunction with repairs to adjacent sea defences.
Upton Fort, or Upton Battery, was a coastal defence battery, built between 1901-1903 as the latest static defensive position for the protection of Portland Harbour. The 9.2inch BL and two 6 inch guns ...were removed later. The battery was then rearmed during 1940-41, with two 6 inch naval guns which necessitated some major alterations to the gun emplacements. In WWII there was the construction of a new battery observation post, two coastal artillery searchlight positions and a number of wooden army huts. The battery was finally decommissioned in 1956 and has survived in almost complete condition. Many of the WWII additions were in poor condition and some buildings were demolished. Au(adp)

Book Chapter
Death was a constant reality along the armies’ lines outside of Spotsylvania Court House on May 9 and 10, 1864. This chapter recounts the seemingly ceaseless killing and maiming. At Laurel Hill, more ...Union assaults ended in more bloody repulses. On the Confederate right flank, Robert E. Lee examined the salient and called it “a wretched line.” He agreed reluctantly to hold it with artillery batteries supporting the infantry in the “Mule Shoe,” as the soldiers called the defensive works. The Yankees assailed the Mule Shoe’s western face on the evening of May 10. A dozen Union regiments, led by Colonel Emory Upton, penetrated a section of the Rebel works, known as Doles’s Salient, before being repulsed by Confederate counterattackers.
