Star clusters projected on to dense stellar fields in general require field-star (FS) decontamination to confirm their nature and derive intrinsic photometric and structural fundamental parameters. ...This work focuses on the open clusters (OCs) or candidates NGC 5715, Lyngå 4, Lyngå 9, Trumpler 23, Trumpler 26 and Czernik 37 which are projected within
and
, against crowded bulge and/or disc fields. To tackle these difficult objects we develop a colour-magnitude diagram FS-decontamination algorithm based on 2MASS J, (J−H) and (J−K
s) data, and respective uncertainties, to detect cluster star excesses over the background. On the other hand, colour-magnitude filters are used to build stellar radial density profiles and mass functions. The results convey compelling evidence that Lyngå 9 and Czernik 37 are intermediate-age OCs, and their fundamental parameters are measured for the first time. Trumpler 23 is a particularly challenging object, since besides high background level, its field presents variable absorption in near-infrared bands. We confirm it to be an intermediate-age OC. Trumpler 26 is studied in more detail than in previous works, while NGC 5715 and Lyngå 4 have fundamental parameters determined for the first time. These OCs are located 0.9-1.6 kpc within the solar circle, with ages similar to that of the Hyades. Structurally, they are well described by King profiles. In all cases, core and limiting radii are significantly smaller than those of nearby OCs outside the solar circle. We test the effect of background levels on cluster radii determinations by means of simulations. They indicate that for central clusters, radii may be underestimated by about 10-20 per cent, which suggests that the small sizes measured for the present sample reflect as well intrinsic properties related to dynamical evolution effects. The objects probably have been suffering important tidal effects that may have accelerated dynamical evolution, especially in Czernik 37, the innermost object.
Medizinische Aspekte (u. a.
Context
. The Vela-Puppis region is known to host the Vela OB2 association as well as several young clusters featuring OB and pre-main-sequence stars. Several spatial and kinematic subgroups have ...been identified in recent years.
Aims
. By grouping stars based on their positions and velocity, we can address the question of the dynamical history of the region and the mechanisms that drove stellar formation. The
Gaia
DR2 astrometry and photometry enables us to characterise the 3D spatial and 3D kinematic distribution of young stars and to estimate the ages of the identified components.
Methods
. We used an unsupervised classification method to group stars based on their proper motions and parallax. We studied the expansion rates of the different identified groups based on 3D velocities and on corrected tangential velocities. We used theoretical isochrones to estimate ages.
Results
. The young stars can be separated into seven main groups of different ages and kinematical distribution. All groups are found to be expanding, although the expansion is mostly not isotropic.
Conclusions
. The size of the region, the age substructure, and the anisotropic expansion rates are compatible with a prolonged period of star formation in a turbulent molecular cloud. The current kinematics of the stars cannot be explained by internal processes alone (such as gas expulsion).
A new theoretical framework for understanding how social, economic, and political conflicts influence international institutions and their place in the global order Today's liberal international ...institutional order is being challenged by the rising power of illiberal states and by domestic political changes inside liberal states. Against this backdrop, Ideology and International Institutions offers a broader understanding of international institutions by arguing that the politics of multilateralism has always been based on ideology and ideological divisions. Erik Voeten develops new theories and measures to make sense of past and current challenges to multilateral institutions.Voeten presents a straightforward theoretical framework that analyzes multilateral institutions as attempts by states to shift the policies of others toward their preferred ideological positions. He then measures how states have positioned themselves in global ideological conflicts during the past seventy-five years. Empirical chapters illustrate how ideological struggles shape the design of international institutions, membership in international institutions, and the critical role of multilateral institutions in militarized conflicts. Voeten also examines populism's rise and other ideological threats to the liberal international order. Ideology and International Institutions explores the essential ways in which ideological contestation has influenced world politics.
Moral Authoritarianism offers a new perspective on the three
modern Korean states-the Japanese colonial state, South Korea, and
North Korea-by studying neighborhood associations during the four
war ...decades (1930s-1960s). The existing historiography perceives
the three states in relation to imperialism and to the Cold War,
thus emphasizing their differences by political changes. By
shifting the focus from national policy to local society, this book
instead reveals their deep similarities. Neighborhood associations
dated back to the premodern Chosŏn period (1392-1910), when they
were used to assist local governance. They faded in significance
until the colonial government established "patriotic neighborhood
associations" in 1938 for its war against China. Through analysis
of government documents from the three Koreas and additional
sources that include diaries, leaflets, newspapers, and even
fiction, Moral Authoritarianism explores neighborhood associations
as a site of negotiation between families, local society, and the
central government; exposing the moral authoritarian structure
present in all three Koreas. Colonial neighborhood associations,
tasked with the national mobilization of local Koreans, advanced
programs of mass enlightenment that privileged state interests over
individual rights, in the process blurring the line between
morality and state authority and superimposing patriarchal familial
dynamics on societal relations. Despite their different ideological
orientations, the neighborhood associations of two postliberation
Koreas shared the same enlightenment mission with their earlier
forms, and this commonality is critical to understanding the
authoritarian direction taken by South and North Korea. The
neighborhood association entrusted each state with promoting
community-based morality and spirit of voluntarism as an
alternative to amoral laissez-faire capitalism and the individual
right-based West. Consequently, the state retained its supremacy
over the populace at the most basic level of community
organization, and Koreans were encouraged to respond to state
calls, culminating into two authoritarianisms of the 1970s-Korean
style democracy and "our own style" socialism.
