The article generalizes and systematizes the approaches to the list of components of business processes taking account of the main factors of enterprise activity (subject of activity, features of ...technological process, specificity of markets, life cycle (LC) of production, LC of enterprise, etc.). The article researches the essence of management of business processes according to the author’s approaches to the description, the content of sequence of operations in the process of transformation of the input parameters into the output parameters as a result of the closed process. In order to ensure efficient management it is recommended to use the systems of business processes according to their key role and the level of production-economic activity of enterprise. The administrative approach to business processes on the basis of their classification has been substantiated, the following suggestions for industrial enterprise have been made: the key business processes according to needs and hierarchies (operational, supporting, administrative, developing); the determining business processes (auxiliary, additional) in relation to the key business processes.
The domains of complex event processing (CEP) and business process management (BPM) have different origins but for many aspects draw on similar concepts. While specific combinations of BPM and CEP ...have attracted research attention, resulting in solutions to specific problems, we attempt to take a broad view at the opportunities and challenges involved. We first illustrate these by a detailed example from the logistics domain. We then propose a mapping of this area into four quadrants — - two quadrants drawing from CEP to create or extend process models and two quadrants starting from a process model to address how it can guide CEP. Existing literature is reviewed and specific challenges and opportunities are indicated for each of these quadrants. Based on this mapping, we identify challenges and opportunities that recur across quadrants and can be considered as the core issues of this combination. We suggest that addressing these issues in a generic manner would form a sound basis for future applications and advance this area significantly.
•Complex event processing (CEP) and business process management (BPM) can mutually benefit through a convergence of formalisms and methods from both worlds.•For quadrants are discussed in detail: two for using CEP to create or extend process models and two on how process models can guide CEP.•Challenges and opportunities for this combination are identified as a sound basis for future research agenda and applications.•Identified issues bear cross-quadrant relevance and should be addressed fundamentally, not in the context of a specific application.

There is an abundance of business process modeling techniques that capture and address different aspects of a business process. A limited number of these process models allow further quantitative ...analysis, and only a few enable structured process improvement. This paper reviews and classifies the main techniques for business process modeling with regard to their analysis and optimization capabilities. Three primary groups are identified, and a selection of representative business process modeling techniques is classified based on these. Similar classification is also presented for the analysis and optimization approaches for business processes that were identified in relevant literature. The main contribution of the paper is that it identifies which types of business process models are suitable for analysis and optimization, and also highlights the lack of such approaches. This paper offers a state-of-the-art review in the areas of business process modeling, analysis, and optimization-underlining that the latter two have not received enough coverage and support in the literature.
The article analyzes the essence and content of business processes in a broad sense: as a structured sequence of actions to perform a certain type of activity at all stages of the life cycle of the ...subject of activity – from the creation of a conceptual idea through design to implementation and obtaining results. It is noted that there is no standard list of business processes – each organization must develop its own «architecture» of such processes. Concerning the aforesaid, the experience of implementing the process management has testified to the advisability of identifying and classifying the business processes by a specially formed team, which must include: the owners of the organization, top managers, and specialists who know the problems and technologies of the company. It is emphasized that process management helps to optimize the use of resources, reduce financial costs, increase the efficiency of the organization and the quality of work, increase customer and employee satisfaction, while process modeling and analysis allow to develop the organization, improve the efficiency and quality of its functioning. It is shown that in practice, business processes are usually determined based on the needs of customers, and it is important to ensure the smooth execution of the process, which, in turn, will allow the organization to increase added value and maximize the usefulness and value of products and services for its customers. The authors prove the need to use business process reengineering as a special approach to reforming the organization’s activities, which consists in a fundamental redesign of work processes in the organization in order to improve key indicators, reduce costs and, ultimately, increase profits.
Continuous improvement of business processes is a challenging task that requires complex and robust supporting systems. Using advanced analytics methods and emerging technologies--such as business ...intelligence systems, business activity monitoring, predictive analytics, behavioral pattern recognition, and "type simulations"--can help business users continuously improve their processes. However, the high volumes of event data produced by the execution of processes during the business lifetime prevent business users from efficiently accessing timely analytics data. This article presents a technological solution using a big data approach to provide business analysts with visibility on distributed process and business performance. The proposed architecture lets users analyze business performance in highly distributed environments with a short time response. This article is part of a special issue on leveraging big data and business analytics.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to give an in-depth understanding of the nature of business processes (BPs) from the perspective of their dynamism and knowledge intensity that will allow for ...their correct classification and provide practical and useful implications for their more relevant and effective management. A simple and low labor-intensive BP nature assessment approach is proposed that will allow for objective assessment and internal benchmarking of all BPs in a specific context of execution based on their nature.Design/methodology/approachThe research is divided into two parts. The first comprises a systematic literature review (SLR) based on the resources of the ProQuest, Springer Nature and ScienceDirect full-text databases and the second includes illustrative case studies.FindingsBuilding on the SLR, the authors identified and reviewed 3,385 articles and defined a set of criteria by which the nature of BPs can be assessed. Further, the authors proposed a BP nature assessment matrix together with complementary questionnaires for the evaluation of process dynamism and knowledge intensity. To demonstrate the logic of this approach, two illustrative case studies were presented.Originality/valueThe article contributes to the theoretical reflection on the nature of BPs in the knowledge economy. From the practical point of view, a novel approach to the assessment of the nature of BPs is offered. The approach is open and as experience is accumulated it will develop according to the data and recommendations collected.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is of great interest to researchers and practitioners as a means of achieving the necessary progress in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the role of AI and ways of ...transforming companies are not well studied. The purpose of the paper is to identify exactly how AI affects the key and support business processes of pharmaceutical companies. We offer a qualitative interview study of five large, five medium, and five small pharmaceutical companies. Based on scarce literature on the role of AI in the pharmaceutical industry, we considered which business processes are subject to transform within it and how they do so. We determine that small pharma companies significantly change research and development, master data management, analysis and reporting, and human resource business processes under the influence of AI. Large pharma companies use AI to transform production, sales, marketing, and analysis business processes. In turn, medium-sized companies are in the middle and individually transform their business processes depending on their specialization.
•The study investigates the role of artificial intelligence on business processes in the pharmaceutical industry.•Depending on the size of the company, business processes vary from minimum to significant, including non-applicable ones.•Some business processes cannot be changed at this time due to strict industry regulations.•AI will impact areas where human skills are suited to the maximum of their capabilities.
Regulatory agencies have long adopted a three‐tier framework for risk assessment. We build on this structure to propose a tiered approach for resilience assessment that can be integrated into the ...existing regulatory processes. Comprehensive approaches to assessing resilience at appropriate and operational scales, reconciling analytical complexity as needed with stakeholder needs and resources available, and ultimately creating actionable recommendations to enhance resilience are still lacking. Our proposed framework consists of tiers by which analysts can select resilience assessment and decision support tools to inform associated management actions relative to the scope and urgency of the risk and the capacity of resource managers to improve system resilience. The resilience management framework proposed is not intended to supplant either risk management or the many existing efforts of resilience quantification method development, but instead provide a guide to selecting tools that are appropriate for the given analytic need. The goal of this tiered approach is to intentionally parallel the tiered approach used in regulatory contexts so that resilience assessment might be more easily and quickly integrated into existing structures and with existing policies.
