Career construction counseling for a mid‐career Black man is examined. The author implemented a case study design and purposively selected the participant. The intervention and follow‐up occurred ...over a period of 21 months, and the Career Construction Interview (CCI; Savickas, ) was used to gather data. Savickas's 8‐step strategy was followed to complete the participant's life portrait. After the intervention, the participant demonstrated an improved sense of self and willingness to deal more adaptively with career–life‐related challenges. More research is needed to determine the long‐term effects of this kind of intervention and to show its applicability in group contexts.
Career construction for life design aims to assist individuals across developmental age periods to anticipate and manage career transitions. We developed and implemented a group career construction ...intervention based on the My Career Story (MCS) workbook and compared it with a traditional career intervention for fostering life-career design among early adolescent youth. Participants (N = 108) were assigned based on convenience to an experimental group (27 girls, 27 boys) or a control group (27 girls, 27 boys). All participants responded pre- and postintervention to measures of career adaptability, hope and optimism, and resilience and future orientation. Results indicated increased postintervention scores on career adaptability and future orientation measures for the experimental group but not for the control group. Likewise, moderation analysis revealed post-intervention increases in scores on measures of the concern and control dimensions of career adaptability for the experimental group only. No significant changes occurred in hope and optimism or resilience scores for either group. Social validity analysis supported participants' perceived efficacy, usefulness, and satisfaction with the career construction counseling group intervention. The MCS shows promise as a narrative-based intervention to promote particular aspects of youth life-career construction. Future research is needed to further examine and support the efficacy of the MCS for this purpose.

We investigated the value of a three‐phase, six‐step group‐based career construction counselling intervention for prospective university students from disadvantaged backgrounds using an integrative, ...QUALITATIVE‐quantitative design. The participants completed measures of career adaptability and career decision‐making difficulties before and after the intervention. Results indicated that the girls’ career adaptability scores increased more than those of the boys. Notable pretest and posttest score differences were also found for both the boys and the girls in all three main career decision‐making difficulties categories including Lack of Readiness, Lack of Information, and Inconsistent Information. While encouraging, longitudinal research with larger samples and more diverse participants in diverse contexts is necessary to more fully determine the value of the approach used here.
The college experience for many students is marked by challenges and concerns surrounding educational and career choices. These challenges and concerns may be reflected in a student’s career decision ...state, or the extent that one is certain, satisfied, and clear about one’s career goals. This study examines students’ career decision states at the beginning and at the end of a career course intervention. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings for further practice and research.
Boundaryless career theories are increasingly prominent in career studies and management studies, and provide a new ‘status quo’ concerning modern careers. This paper contextualizes the boundaryless ...careers literature within management studies, and evaluates its contributions, including broadening concepts of career and focusing interorganizational career phenomena. It acknowledges the considerable stimulus given to career studies by this literature, but also offers a critique based on five issues: inaccurate labelling; loose definitions; overemphasis on personal agency; the normalization of boundaryless careers; and poor empirical support for the claimed dominance of boundaryless careers. Because these problems render the boundaryless career concept increasingly obsolete as a ‘leading edge’ construct in career studies, we offer new directions for theory and research. In particular we re-examine the role of career boundaries, and suggest the development of new, boundary-focused careers scholarship based on boundary theory, to facilitate studies of the processes whereby career boundaries are created, and their effects in constraining, enabling and punctuating careers.

International scientific mobility and research careers are two concepts that are intimately related. Yet, it has been very difficult for scholarship to pinpoint exactly how international mobility ...impacts on research careers. This paper contributes to this question by investigating links between international mobility, research career stage progression and job changes. It does so using a large-scale survey (MORE) which targets researchers based in European universities. The results establish that the profile of international mobility varies by academic research career stage. They also show that for researchers in the established mid-career phase who are working internationally, there are career advancement benefits associated with return mobility to their home country. However, these benefits may reduce if the timing of return is too delayed. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of these results for researcher mobility policy in the context of the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area.
