During the previous decade, growth in the numbers of internationally mobile students included international high school students. Prior research on international students’ career development in ...higher education may not account for the unique context of younger international students in secondary schools. The current study investigated career influences for international secondary students, using the Systems Theory Framework (Patton & McMahon, 2021). International students in senior years completed written, open-ended surveys and in-person interviews regarding their career aspirations, plans and key influences on their decision-making. International student coordinators and school staff also offered their perspectives about these influences. Results indicate the inter-related systemic influences of individuals, significant relationships, location and country contexts, the secondary school environment, and perceived characteristics of occupations and future career pathways. Implications for supporting international high school students in the school setting and future research directions are discussed.
Employability is a primary concern for many students who face a competitive job market in the aftermath of COVID-19. It is also a pressing concern for universities with governments increasing ...pressure on universities to deliver courses that bring value for money to the students whilst also positively contributing to the economy. To address these demands some universities and courses have embedded employability within their degree (embedded approach) whilst others offer employability teaching through career services separate from students' courses (parallel approach). This article experimentally examines the impact of embedding employability within the curriculum on students' career planning, knowledge, and confidence in completing common graduate selection tasks (i.e. application forms, psychometrics, interviews, etc.). A longitudinal pre-post experiment containing 64 second-year undergraduates found that students that received employability embedded within their course reported an increased sense of career planning, higher levels of knowledge and confidence on selection tasks and greater intentions to attain relevant work experience compared to those in a control group. These findings highlight the important role that universities can play in smoothing students' transition into the workplace.
Building on the counseling psychology literature, this study examined the effects of each dimension of career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and career decision-making profile (CDMP) on ...hospitality students' career decision-making difficulties (CDD). A sequential regression analysis with 273 valid questionnaires was performed while controlling participants’ demographic background information. CDMSE and CDMP explain 27.9% and 25.6% of the variance in CDD respectively. Goal selection in CDMSE, as well as locus of control, effort invested in the process, procrastination, and speed of making the final decision in CDMP are significant predictors of CDD. Specific practical implications that assist students with CDD are discussed.

This paper analyses three key components of a career development curriculum for business majors that has generated superior results, supporting undergraduates’ transition from higher education to ...professional employment while teaching students career advancement skills that will be used throughout their lives. Students have expressed strong satisfaction with opportunities for coaching and mentoring, coursework facilitating experiential learning, and mandatory internships in their major. Analyses of qualitative data drawn from student assignments and course evaluations suggest these three elements of the program have positively impacted students’ career-readiness, career aspirations and career achievements. Attending to clients' psychological needs during career counseling merits more attention in career theory and practice. We describe how the elaboration of clients' needs during career construction ...counseling supports clients' problem formulation. After reviewing the literature on the psychology of needs, we present and illustrate an intervention strategy with a case example. Counseling vignettes from the initial counseling task of problem formulation illustrate how to facilitate clients' narrative symbolization of their emotional experiences and associated needs. We explain how this strategy contributes to deepening clients' understanding of their problems and facilitates both the rewriting of a career narrative and the construction of new career plans. Analysis of the possibilities and limits of this practice merits attention in career counseling process research.
Future orientation is crucial for young people to achieve career-developmental milestones, yet little research has examined the role of future orientation in attaining career outcomes in adult ...samples. Using the future orientation framework, we tested direct effects of future orientation on career agency (proactive career behaviors and work effort) and career success (perceived employability and career adaptability), indirect effects via career agency variables, and conditional effects of negative career feedback in the future orientation-career agency-career success relationships. We surveyed 285 adults (M = 38.38 years) and conducted structural equation and moderated mediation analyses. Future orientation was associated positively with work effort, proactive career behaviors, career adaptability, and perceptions of employability. Work effort and proactive career behaviors mediated the future orientation-career success relationship. The mediation via career behaviors (but not work effort) was dependent on the level of received negative career feedback. The results have theoretical and practical implications.
Designed as part of an individual career construction and life design counseling intervention, the Career Construction Interview (CCI) and My Career Story (MCS) workbook aid career counselors and ...other career service providers in helping clients construct, deconstruct, and reauthor their career stories. Recently, some career counselors have developed ways of using the CCI and the MCS in group settings. In this article, the author offers 3 additional ways to use the CCI and, thereby, add creativity to the career counseling process. These 3 ways include use of written exercises, career collages, and career portfolios. The article concludes with a call for career practitioners to continue to think creatively in using the CCI with clients.
The combination of two trends common in working life - international work and a dual career situation - is challenging for both genders. In order to cope with the situation, international dual career ...couples have to be able to coordinate their careers. The purpose of this article is to identify how dual career expatriates view their career coordination strategies with their partners, and how these views differ between the genders. Semi-structured interviews were carried out among 39 expatriates on assignment who had a partner working, at least before the assignment. Our findings identify three career coordination strategies applied by dual career couples, and confirm gender plays an essential role in the formation of those strategies. Male expatriates predominated among the group adopting a hierarchical strategy and female expatriates predominated among the group adopting an egalitarian and a loose coordination strategy. Strategies also seemed prone to change over time. Companies should pay attention to both the career development of the partner and the relationship coping skills of the couple to maximize the chances of dual career expatriate assignments being successful.
Purpose
The dynamic career scenario and the significant change from traditionally placing careers in employers’ hands to self-managing one’s careers have sparked profound scholarly interest in career ...growth. This paper aims to analyze quadricentennial literature on career growth published during the years 1995 through 2020. In this paper, through bibliometric and integrative reviews, the authors address the two critical questions, “what do we know?” and “where should we go?” While the bibliometric review examines the evolution and trends, the integrative review examines the dynamics of conceptual frameworks, primary research foci, research context and quality in research designs and methods.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopted preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines to identify the papers for this review. The data set comprised 102 papers and 60 papers for bibliometric and integrative review, respectively. “CiteSpace” is used for the bibliometric analysis and the template designed by the authors is used for the integrative review.
Findings
The results present conceptual clarification for career growth and its related constructs. The bibliometric analysis findings highlight the extensive research on career growth followed by organizational career growth and career growth opportunities. The findings also show that seven of the top 10 productive authors are from China. This study also identifies theoretical, conceptual and methodological opportunities and provides recommendations intended to further research engagements across the different aspects of career growth.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to introduce bibliometric analysis into career growth literature. This research adopts an integrative review approach and offers insights into career growth literature.
Parents contribute a great deal to their children's career development. Despite the central importance of the self-concept to career development, little research has examined the role played by ...parental engagement in the link between the child's self-concept and career development. Integrating self-verification and career construction theories, we develop and test the prediction that parental engagement indirectly contributes to career adaptability and career persistence by serving as a tacit signal of the child's positive worth. Using a time- lagged survey design, we tested the proposed moderated mediation model in a sample of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) university students. The results show full support for the hypothesised model. Consistent with self-verification theory, STEM students' self-esteem was only associated with subsequent career adaptability and career persistence if they also perceived high levels of parental engagement. This result held despite statistically controlling for parent-reported parental engagement. We discuss implications for career development, STEM career persistence, and career counseling.
