Since advances in computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools have made virtual exchanges readily available in educational practices, telecollaboration has been gaining traction as a means to provide ...practical experiences and cultural exposure to language learners and, more recently, teacher trainees. Drawing upon Byram's (1997) model of intercultural communicative competence (ICC), this study examines 48 teacher trainees' interculturality through a telecollaborative project between two teacher training classes from Turkey and the USA. This study relies on data generated by the participants throughout this telecollaborative project: weekly online discussion board posts within groups of six and post-project reflections. Although developing ICC is an arduous and prolonged task, the data analysis suggested that the participants' experiences in this telecollaboration contributed to their emergent ICC through discussions on the topics of multicultural education and interactions with trainees from another educational context. Their intercultural learning is evidenced by their (1) awareness of heterogeneity in their own and interactants' culture, (2) nascent critical cultural awareness, and (3) curiosity and willingness to learn more about the other culture. Thus, this study implies that telecollaboration offers an effective teacher training venue that affords teacher trainees with first-hand intercultural encounters to engage with otherness and prepare for their ethnolinguistically diverse classrooms.
Over several generations villagers of Dominica have been shifting from Patwa, an Afro-French creole, to English, the official language. Despite government efforts at Patwa revitalization and cultural ...heritage tourism, rural caregivers and teachers prohibit children from speaking Patwa in their presence. Drawing on detailed ethnographic fieldwork and analysis of video-recorded social interaction in naturalistic home, school, village and urban settings, the study explores this paradox and examines the role of children and their social worlds. It offers much-needed insights into the study of language socialization, language shift and Caribbean children's agency and social lives, contributing to the burgeoning interdisciplinary study of children's cultures. Further, it demonstrates the critical role played by children in the transmission and transformation of linguistic practices, which ultimately may determine the fate of a language.
The article's scientific novelty lies in the authors' disclosure of the third-year students' average degree of communicative competence (CC) development. Of all the CC components, the cognitive and ...emotional components are the most prevalent (it can be observed among students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Arts). The students of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and the Faculty of Arts and Graphics are more prepared for the behavioral component of the CC. Both students at the Faculty of Arts and Graphics and the Faculty of Physical Education exhibit a high degree of communicative tolerance. Additionally, the two factors that affect CC were identified: the external factors (organization of students' subject-related leisure; professional-oriented educational work with students; content of education at institutions of higher pedagogical education: specialty of the chosen profession; increased cycle of humanities; active pedagogical practice of students; age of students to work with; different categories of children and adults to work with); and the internal factors (students’ attitude towards self-development, self-education, students’ life and social experience, motivation for acquiring a specialty and CC, humanistic orientation of future teacher’s personality, persona's orientation to “person to person” profession).
Discourses surrounding digital technologies have often foregrounded their capacity to connect people however, in reality, online communication can also result in fragmentation, polarization and modes ...of exclusion. To address these issues, this paper highlights the need for learners to develop a critical digital literacy (CDL) that contributes to a greater understanding of how power and ideologies operate online. By proposing a two-pronged teaching strategy that integrates inquiry-based learning and digital activism, this paper seeks to demonstrate how the field of language and intercultural communication can help imagine a more equitable and inclusive online world through focused teaching strategies.
This case study is aimed to examine the communicative competence of an Indonesian student who is studying in one of the United States Universities. The evaluation of the communicative competence, ...such as speaking and writing, was based on the theory of Communicative Competence (CC) proposed by Celce-Murcia (2008). The spoken and written data given were from the IELTS test format. The spoken data was collected by face-to-face interview through the Skype application, while the written data was collected by sending the participant two models of the IELTS writing test, Academic and General Training model tests, through email. These data were analysed by transcribing the interview and written word-processed. It was found that the participant demonstrated strengths as well as limitation in communicative competence. It is suggested for the participant to take the opportunity to communicate with the native speakers as much as possible while he is staying in the United States.

Telecollaboration in the language classroom promotes both second-language development and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). However, previous research identified its potential ...limitations, including instances of failure, misunderstanding, tension, and a reluctance to participate. The current study contributes to emerging literature concerning the role of prior pedagogical mentoring in supporting learner interaction during telecollaborative exchanges by examining the online interactions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A total of 38 undergraduate students from Kuwait and Colombia participated in pedagogical mentoring before engaging in an eight-week series of online activities. The students' online discussions are analysed herein using a content analysis framework triangulated with their responses to a post-questionnaire. The findings reveal the students engage in various socio-affective and cognitive interactional behaviours that correspond to Byram's (
1997
) ICC framework. The micro-level analysis of the students' interaction and post-questionnaire demonstrates that most of these interactional behaviours correlate with descriptors pertaining to aspects of attitudes (curiosity and openness) and knowledge. Instances of the skills of discovery and interaction are also observed when the students engage with religious and socially related topics. The study concludes that prior pedagogical mentoring is beneficial for equipping learners with essential skills, including the collaborative skills that are an indispensable prerequisite for effective participation in telecollaborative exchanges.
This research seeks to highlight the perceptions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Algeria regarding the assessment of learners’ ICC. In the classroom. Additionally, this research ...proposes some suggestions on how to teach and assess middle school learners to be interculturally competent. To achieve this objective, a qualitative research design is employed to gain data. The data source of this study was eleven English middle school teachers from different middle schools in Algeria. The study applied an interview utilizing open-ended questions to see their responses about their perceptions and attitudes toward the assessment of their learners. The data collected was thematically analyzed to identify recurring patterns, challenges, and emerging themes related to the assessment of ICC in the EFL classroom. The results show teachers need training on developing communicative tasks for teaching culture that can help them assess their students’ intercultural communicative competence. So, the lack of continuing professional development in pre-service and in-service makes them wander when teaching their learners about the target language and its culture. In addition to this, data show that teachers assess their learners in terms of grammar, pronunciation, general knowledge about the target culture, and vocabulary, but they do not assess their ICC. The implications of this study extended to both pedagogical practices and educational policy in Algeria. By understanding teachers’ perceptions, this research contributes valuable information to the ongoing discourse on fostering intercultural competence in language education. The findings may guide curriculum development, teacher training programs, and assessment practices, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of EFL instruction in Algeria.
This paper focuses on integrating multimodal communication into the English-as-a-foreign-language classroom to enhance the development of students’ multimodal communicative competence, ...multiliteracies, and 21st-century skills. To do so, I compiled a corpus of authentic materials from Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers in Julia Quinn’s novel The Viscount Who Loved Me (2000), her appearances as narrator in the Netflix series Bridgerton (2022), and some tweets posted by @Bridgerton. This corpus was used to plan and design a game-based teaching proposal. Finally, the paper offers a critical analysis and suggests how this proposal can feasibly contribute to fostering students’ multimodal communicative competence.
The purpose of this work is to study the impact of using mobile training plans and measuring the physical abilities of athletes on their communicative competence and group interaction during mixed ...training. The biopsychosocial concept of a person, the unity of the physical and mental components of its personality formed the basis for the research methodology. The researchers divided a sample of respondents into two groups: an experimental and a control one of the non-team sports. The experimental group used training plans shared by the members using mobile devices and providing their teachers with access. The control group followed the traditional curriculum without the use of mobile technologies. They also assessed the level of interaction twice using valid psychodiagnostic techniques. They also rate the interaction level twice using the valid psychodiagnostic techniques. The results of our research prove the greater effectiveness of mobile joint training plans compared to traditional ones. The importance of developing the psychological qualities of athleticism in athletes, improving communicative competence and group interaction to increase the effectiveness of sports training and the possibility of using artificial intelligence technology for this are shown, which can be considered as a promising direction for our further research.
