ObjectivesThis study explores the significant impact of expressive ties (EI) between DanceSport couples on their competitive performance (CP). Utilizing a dyadic approach, we examined the performance ...achievement processes of DanceSport couples in relation to their EI.MethodsParticipants comprised 67 dyads of Chinese elite dancers aged between 16 and 30 years. The dyadic analysis was carried out using a structural equation model based on the actor-partner interdependence mediation model.ResultsWith regard to actor effects, both male (β = 0.292, p = 0.012) and female (β = 0.443, p < 0.001) dancers' perceived quality of EI had a positive correlation with CP. The males' athlete engagement (AE) partially mediated the impact of EI on CP indirect effect = 0.144, SE = 0.072, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 0.020, 0.283. Regarding partner effects, females' perceived EI quality positively influenced the male's CP (β = 0.26, p = 0.023) and mediated this association through the male's AE indirect effect = 0.086, SE = 0.041, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 0.003, 0.149. Similarly, the females' AE mediated the effect of males' perceived EI quality on the females' CP indirect effect = 0.152, SE = 0.074, 95% confidence intervals (CI) =0.002, 0.256.ConclusionWe not only validated the propositions of the self-determination theory but also provided valuable insights to further enrich it. Our findings underscore that self-determination theory must account for individual gender characteristics.
•Data driven innovation is opening a new digitalization frontier.•We confirm the antecedents and effects of data driven innovation capability (DDIC).•We show how DDIC influences market agility and ...strategic performance.
In the race to achieve market dominance and stay competitive in a disruptive and rapidly changing business environment, many firms have invested significantly in data-driven innovation capabilities (DDIC). Surprisingly, the role that strategic market agility plays in achieving a firm's competitiveness through DDIC is understudied. Addressing this gap, we conceptualize the DDIC research model using the resource-based view, dynamic capability, market orientation and disruptive innovation theory. We empirically test the model with survey data from 312 Australian managers. We illuminate the significance of strategic market agility as a key mediator between DDIC and strategic competitive performance. We discuss the implications of our findings for theoretical contributions and managerial implications.
A question of central importance for researchers and practitioners is how information technology (IT) can help firms survive and thrive in turbulent and constantly changing business environments. To ...address this issue, this study develops the idea that IT architecture flexibility helps sustain competitive performance by driving the formation of IT-enabled dynamic capabilities, and that IT governance decentralisation strengthens this relationship. IT architecture flexibility and IT governance decentralisation, therefore, develop complementary effects. We argue that IT-enabled dynamic capabilities are a core antecedent for competitive performance gains, particularly under uncertain external environmental conditions. Tests of the proposed model using survey data from 322 international firms support these ideas. Our research also shows that, under conditions of high environmental heterogeneity, the value of IT architecture flexibility and IT governance decentralisation is increased, while the impact of IT-enabled dynamic capabilities on competitive performance is amplified.
The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine a theoretical model which identifies the effect of process quality improvement and lean practices on competitive performance in the healthcare ...industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study uses a quantitative research technique with convenient cluster sampling through applying a descriptive, causal and analytical research design. A valid sample size of 270 respondents is used for analysis by linear regression and hypothesis testing using SPSS. The results indicate a direct significant relationship between process quality improvement and a direct significant relationship between lean practices and competitive performance. Given the substantial resources spent and efforts to improve healthcare quality, the absence of studies demonstrating the impact of quality-related operations and activities would require future research. Hospitals in one city in UAE have access that limits the research results. It is recommended that future research assess more variables dependency on the healthcare sector that can affect increase competitiveness. The research provides some managerial implications that could help hospital managerial members improve their healthcare delivery system's leanness and quality improvement to get competitiveness. Quality improvement and lean practices help increase competitive performance and can assist the healthcare sector in providing better service using these practices that have never been considered in research.
With big data growing rapidly in importance over the past few years, academics and practitioners have been considering the means through which they can incorporate the shifts these technologies bring ...into their competitive strategies. To date, emphasis has been on the technical aspects of big data, with limited attention paid to the organizational changes they entail and how they should be leveraged strategically. As with any novel technology, it is important to understand the mechanisms and processes through which big data can add business value to companies, and to have a clear picture of the different elements and their interdependencies. To this end, the present paper aims to provide a systematic literature review that can help to explain the mechanisms through which big data analytics (BDA) lead to competitive performance gains. The research framework is grounded on past empirical work on IT business value research, and builds on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities view of the firm. By identifying the main areas of focus for BDA and explaining the mechanisms through which they should be leveraged, this paper attempts to add to literature on how big data should be examined as a source of competitive advantage. To this end, we identify gaps in the extant literature and propose six future research themes.
An extensive work has been done on corporate social responsibly practices (CSRPs) that mainly emphasized the larger firms within developed nations. Nonetheless, still work is needed to observe the ...importance of CSRPs’ and ethical cultural practices (ECL) in terms of sustainable competitive performance (SACP) that garnered far less attention by the existing literature. This study explores the impact of CSRPs on SACP with the mediating role of ECL from SMEs of two emerging nations, i.e., China and Pakistan based on stakeholders’ theory and practices. The results using SEM affirmed the positive linkages of CSRPs—environment responsibility (
EnvR
), community responsibility (
ComuR
), customers' responsibility (
CustR
), suppliers responsibility (
SupR
), employee responsibility (
EmpR
), and Govt. rules & regulations’ responsibility (
GRulR
)—on SACP. It found that CSRPs have positive relationships with ECL whereas ECL further positively correlated with SACP in the context of both countries. The findings revealed the positive mediating influence of ECL between CSRPs and SACP, respectively. This study furnishes insightful information for management on how firms may achieve sustainable performance by incorporating ethical cultural practices and corporate social responsibility practices as the strategic tools. The study reports numerous implications for management together with lines for future directions.
Supply chain quality management has received increasing attention from researchers and practitioners in recent years. However, the knowledge about the effects of a manufacturer's design and ...production capabilities on supply chain quality management is limited. In this study, we propose a model to investigate the effects of mass customization and product modularity on supply chain quality integration (i.e. internal, supplier, and customer quality integration) and the impact of supply chain quality integration on competitive performance. We use data collected from 317 global manufacturers to empirically test the conceptual model. The results show that mass customization and product modularity directly improve internal quality integration, and product modularity also improves internal quality integration indirectly through mass customization. Product modularity improves supplier quality integration directly, and both mass customization and product modularity improve supplier quality integration indirectly through internal quality integration. Mass customization improves customer quality integration both directly and indirectly through internal quality integration, and product modularity improves customer quality integration indirectly through mass customization and internal quality integration. We also find that supplier quality integration directly enhances competitive performance, and internal quality integration enhances competitive performance both directly and indirectly through supplier quality integration. Our findings contribute to production and quality management literature and practices.
This paper presents the results of an empirical study on the relationship between quality management practices and competitive performance in Japanese manufacturing companies. The data was gathered ...from two surveys including the common sample of twenty-seven Japanese manufacturing companies in the 1990s and the 2000s. Statistical techniques are used to compare the degree of implementation of the eleven quality management practices and their impact on different dimensions of competitive performance between two periods. Findings of this study highlight the stability and consistency of the Japanese quality management, which can be used as one of the strategic weapons for maintaining competitive advantage of Japanese manufacturing companies.
The effects of agile practices on sustainability performance measures require examination and clarification especially given the wider diffusion of agility and the increasing embrace of ...sustainability. More importantly, the role agility plays in enhancing or not enhancing sustainability performance is not fully understood. Therefore, we explored the interaction effects between agile practices, sustainable practices, operational performance objectives and sustainable performance of organisations. A survey of higher carbon and energy intensive supply chains in the UK was carried out with a net 311 respondent organisations. The results show that there is a significant correlation between sustainable supply chain practices and agile practices. Also, the results indicate that agile practices do have a positive influence on both sustainability performance and operational performance objectives. Whilst the link between agility and operational performance is not new, what is new here is the connection between agile practices and sustainability performance. In addition, the findings show that sustainable supply chain practices predict both sustainability performance and operational performance. But more importantly, when these relationships are mediated by agile practices, the performance impacts of sustainability practices are enhanced. These findings question the usefulness of implementing sustainability practices within the supply chains when there is a lack of agile capabilities. In other words, the results suggest that agile capabilities are necessary conditions for maximizing the outcomes of implementation of sustainability practices. As such, managers who want to maximize the outcomes of their sustainability campaigns should consider concurrent implementation of sustainability practices and agile practices.
