Background: Emotional processing (EP) is hypothesized to be a key mechanism of change in psychotherapy that may enhance its long-term efficacy. To study the effects of fostering EP in psychotherapy ...for depression, this randomized-controlled clinical trial compares the efficacy and pattern of change of a cognitive-behavioral therapy that integrates emotion-focused techniques within an exposure framework (Exposure-Based Cognitive Therapy for depression; EBCT-R) to a standard cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Methods: One hundred and forty-nine depressed outpatients were randomized to a maximum of 22 sessions of manualized EBCT-R (N = 77) or CBT (N = 72). Primary outcomes were self-reported and clinician-rated depressive symptoms at posttreatment and 12-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes were self-esteem, interpersonal problems, and avoidance thoughts and behaviors. Results: Depressive symptoms improved significantly over therapy in both treatments, with large within-group effect sizes for CBT (d = −1.95) and EBCT-R (d = −1.77). The pattern of depression change during treatment did not differ between treatments. Symptom relief lasted over 12 months and did not differ between EBCT-R and CBT. Conclusions: Results suggest that both treatments produced significant short- and long-term improvement in depression symptoms, but the integration of emotion-focused techniques within an exposure framework did not have added benefit.
Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01012856
Clinical or methodological significance of this article: This trial compares cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with a similarly structured CBT that was designed to foster emotional processing by integrating emotion-focused techniques within an exposure framework. Results indicate that this form of assimilative integration did not improve outcomes at 12-month follow-up.
The aim of this contribution is to question the representation of “emotions” in the effigies of Roman emperors that constitute an important medium of their self-promotion. The starting point of the ...study consists of several passages of ancient authors touching on the reflection of character (ethē, sensus) and of feelings/passions (pathē, perturbationes) in the figurative arts. The following paragraphs contain an insight in the ancient lectures of the physiognomy of emperors, real or depicted, and a critical review of their modern interpretations. These allow us to reevaluate the possible presence of adfectus in the portraits of emperors that are presented chronologically, and the way they are expressed visually, particularly in the case of Caracalla where emotivity seems particularly important.

Emotions are a part of the school context, influencing the teaching and learning process. Students and teachers both may be bored, happy, angry, excited, and these emotions influence their ...perceptions and behavior. Only recently has there been a dramatic increase in the research in this area. The book summarizes worldwide research, including both experimental research and field studies, quantitative and qualitative inquiry methods, and across a variety of educational settings. The book is divided into subsections focusing on theoretical perspectives, students' emotions, and teachers' emotions. Chapters discuss the interaction between affect and motivation, the influence of emotion on self-regulated learning, the transience of emotion, test anxiety, the interaction of emotion with identity, beliefs, and goals, and the politics of emotion and teaching. With contributions from Australia, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Israel, and the United States, the book makes clear that there is no removing emotion from educational contexts. (DIPF/Orig./av).
In this paper, we explore how the emotions of eco‐anxiety and eco‐anger can be perceived as potentially constructive responses to the climate crisis. We examine the context in which these emotions ...are experienced and expressed in light of the relationship between human beings and Nature. We argue that these eco‐emotions are both visceral and numinous, and that this dual characteristic is critical when determining how best to respond to eco‐anxiety and eco‐anger. We propose that a suitable approach to this challenge is to draw from the imagination and the symbolic domain, and we offer personal reflections on what this process may look like.

Objectives: Evidence of the contribution of emotional processes to the emergence, maintenance, and experience of medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) suggests that clinical approaches which target ...these processes could be beneficial. In this study, qualitative methods were used to examine patients' perspectives and subjective experiences of emotional processes in the context of a psychotherapy assessment and treatment service for MUS provided in a hospital emergency department (ED). Methods: Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with ED patients presenting with MUS who received a course of intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy treatment. Results: Interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed with three superordinate themes emerging: Barriers to examining emotional processes; reflections on the therapeutic process; psychological change; and improved well-being. Obstacles to clinical engagement in treatment for MUS were described in relation to patients' and therapists' ability to identify, address, and utilize emotion processes. Specific elements of this work were identified as integral components of the psychotherapy change process for MUS. Conclusions: Directly observing the physical effects of emotional experiencing in MUS provides sensory evidence that can enable patients to make mind-body connections. Psycho-emotional processes warrant further study to explore the applicability to other conceptual models for assessing and treating MUS.
Clinical and methodological significance: In this article, we highlight that Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) are a priority area for both physical and mental health care services. We present findings relevant to the effectiveness of a novel psychotherapy innovation within a hospital emergency department (ED). The use of interpretative phenomenological analysis to study the experiences of ED clients with MUS offers an established qualitative method for exploring the processes underlying therapeutic change. The results provide new insights around obstacles to engagement alongside potential solutions when addressing the psychological needs of clients with MUS. Although emotion processes have been described as a potentially important change process for MUS and in psychotherapy more generally, little empirical research has studied these two areas collectively.
This research involves some key elements about the projections and representations of parents about the parent-child relationship in sport, the management of emotional experiences related to ...success/failure, the expectations and motivational aspects related to the parents to engage their children in sporting activities. We wanted to investigate the projections and representations of parents about: the parent-child relationship in sport in particular the management autonomy, the management of emotional experiences related to performance, the success/failure, the expectations of parents to find in the instructor/coach support educational experience of raising children; processing successes and failures; motivational aspects related to the choice of parents to engage their children in sporting activities; parental opinion on the educational value motor activity in school for the individual child and for the group class. The instrument used for data collection is a questionnaire, anonymously, from 384 parents of children attending primary schools involved in the projects of physical education in school Consorzio Vero Volley in the Lombardy region.
Objective: We explored the interactive process in which therapists respond to client self-critical positions. Methods: Drawing from the resources of conversation analysis (CA), we examined a corpus ...of in-session self-critical sequences of talk occurring in different kinds of treatments: Client Centered Therapy, (CCT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (PP) and in different cultural contexts. Results: It was found that client self-critical talk performed various functions pertaining to diminished control, accountability (e.g., failed obligations leading to self-blame) and disparaging evaluations of self (contempt or disgust). Further, therapists were found to respond in ways that targeted the client's report of having diminished control or of being accountable for their negative attributes by providing a more optimistic reading of the client's experience, one that is more open to positive outcomes and the possibility of change. Our sequential analysis not only shows how clients may resist these optimistic readings, but also how therapists work towards successfully achieving moments of re-affiliation. Conclusion: We anticipate that the fine-grained sequential analysis of therapy interaction can provide therapists with a more detailed understanding of the options and challenges therapists face when working with clinical challenges of clients' self-critical positions.
