The study of two hundred and eighty-three letters addressed to Joseph-Juste Scaliger shows the extent of the humanist’s legal network and the active contribution of forty-nine jurists to the Republic ...of Letters. This encyclopedic contribution is based on philology as a central knowledge, in line with Scaliger’s interests. As for law, its place – without being negligible – remains peripheral in this correspondence, while varying according to the regularity of the legal practice of each letter writer.
In this paper we propose an interview with Nathalie Simondon, responsible for the edition of Gilbert Simondon’s work, in order to shed a light on the topics of ecology, encyclopedism, ...transdisciplinarity and humanism in Gilbert Simondon’s philosophical production.
Among the many stages of Kant’s problem of a reciprocal collocation of the human knowledges, Encyclopedism, quite unsurprisingly, is one of the most relevant; and yet, quite surprisingly, it is ...Anthropology which plays here one of the lead parts, insofar as the complex ascertainment of its definition, its position, its task proves to be of irrefutable importance towards solving the greater problem at hand. The question arises as the association – or dissociation – between Empirical Psychology and Pragmatic Anthropology, and their inclusion in, or exclusion from, their greater or lesser relation with Metaphysics; a problem which, to the careless eye, seems to have been promoted by Kant himself. Here, opinions diverge as to the nature of the relation between the two sciences, from their total inter-dependence to their complete separation. We, in turn, propose a different approach. Our objective is to reenact Kant’s fundamental scheme of human knowledges, as presented not only in the only extant Lecture on Encyclopedism, but in various others dimensions of Kant’s academic activity; and here, to propose a contrasting analysis between Empirical Psychology and Pragmatic Anthropology; one, however, based not on the assumption of their consonance or dissonance through their characteristics, rather on their respective position and scope amid the field of human knowledges. As such, it is our intention to consider Kant’s Lectures in their interconnection, namely, in their apparently dubious simultaneous collocation of an Empirical Psychology as Anthropology; and, based on their specific position in the scheme of human knowledges, and what this position entails in terms of their scope and task, to ascertain to what extent Empirical Psychology is indeed Anthropology, and from what extent Empirical Psychology is no longer Anthropology – not, at least, Pragmatic Anthropology. In other words, we shall labor towards defining a dividing line in Kant’s scheme of human knowledges; one which for Kant represents a third dimension of knowledge and stands between rational and empirical, Metaphysics and the historical sciences; that line, in our view, being that of a cosmopolitical prism.

An abbot, a journalist, and a man of letters, Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664–c. 1726) curated, during his frenetic activity, the columns of various literary periodicals. His writings immediately ...caught the attention of some of the leading Italian intellectuals of his time, from Lodovico Antonio Muratori to Antonio Vallisneri. While filling a gap in the coeval cultural press, Dandi’s publications, such as «Gran Giornale de’ Letterati» (1701–1704), were, in fact, a fraud. Rather than creating original works, Dandi appropriated writings that had been printed before, and were later forgotten by the readers. Jacopo Narros brings to light the documentation about Dandi’s cheatings, creating an entertaining narrative of the editorial nonchalance of this singular erudite, and outlining his fascinating figure of forger and plagiarist. Moreover, by investigating the relationship between the «gran sottisier» and the 17th and 18th century literary community, Narros shows the dynamism of the intellectual life of that period. In those years, erudites like Apostolo Zeno and Scipione Maffei were active in structuring new communicative strategies to transmit innovative scientific discoveries and literary experiences to their readership.
Three manuscripts from Mont Saint-Michel, now in the library of Avranches (nr. 226, 235 and 240), transmit a part of Martianus Capella’s work. These three manuscripts are commonly not used by the ...editors of the text, but they reflect different ways of reading and understanding the Marriage of Philology and Mercury at Mont Saint-Michel between the XIth and the XIIIth century. By highlighting the peculiarities of these three manuscripts, this paper aims to study their intellectual background and their place in the history of the text.
This academic paper delves into the concept of encyclopedia articles (entries), their defining characteristics, and, based on this, offers recommendations for creators focusing primarily on ...contributors (rather than editors of encyclopedias). These recommendations specifically elucidate the principles of composition, as well as the linguistic and stylistic aspects of a typical encyclopedia article. In this paper, the author underscores the importance of maintaining academic integrity in encyclopedic writing and illustrating. The study is presented in a manner that enables potential contributors of encyclopedic content to grasp not only what information to include and how to structure it but also to recognize what pitfalls to avoid, thereby mitigating common errors in article writing.
Abstract
This study offers preliminary remarks on a hitherto unknown Greek translation of the Covenant of Muḥammad by the Patriarch Sophronios of Kilis. The translation is preserved in a single ...miscellaneous codex entitled Sarakēnika, which was compiled between 1770 and 1780 by the renowned Phanariot scholar and bibliophile Nikolaos Karatzas, a former official of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (MS Gr. 112, Princeton University Library). As the inclusion of the translation in the codex is representative of the cultural transfers that took place between the Arabic-speaking and the Greek peoples during the 17th- and 18th-century Ottoman Empire, this study examines, in particular, the knowledge regimes for the production of the text. In the Appendix, an editio princeps of the translation is provided.
