For its second issue Ecocene welcomed cross-disciplinary contributions on what it means to be environmentally conscious in the world today, what it might have meant in diverse social-environmental ...pasts, or indeed what it may mean in our shared futures.
This study proposed an extended value-attitude-behavior model to explain for consumers' green purchase behavior and validated this model on a random sample of 399 Chinese consumers in Hong Kong. ...Results of structural equation modelling showed that consumers' environmental consciousness (value) strongly influenced their attitude towards environmental issues and towards eco-social benefits (attitude), which in turn exerted positive effects on their green purchase behavior (behavior). Green product information was found to be a key determinant of consumers’ green purchase behavior. Moreover, high quality green products were reported to moderate the relationships between attitude towards eco-social benefits and green purchase behavior and between green product information and green purchase behavior, but not on the relationship between attitude toward environmental issues and green purchase behavior.
Although a positive relationship is expected between consumers’ awareness of green benefits in a green product and their purchase intention, several studies have demonstrated otherwise. Against this ...back-drop, this article investigates how three personal consumption values—namely, environmental, status, and value-for-money consciousness—moderate the relationship between consumers’ awareness of a product’s green benefits and their purchase intention. From a survey of 956 consumers across the United Kingdom and China, we find a positive and significant relationship between consumers’ awareness of green benefits and their purchase intention. However, these consumption values significantly moderate this relationship. In the United Kingdom, environmental consciousness strengthens the relationship. On the other hand, status consciousness and value-for-money consciousness strengthen the relationship in China. The findings make original contributions to the literature by highlighting how to integrate individual consumption values in differing national cultures to refine green marketing theories.
Environmental commentators have speculated, but not empirically validated, that consumers’ positive (negative) evaluation of the economy will lead to more (less) green consumption. The purposes of ...this study were to (1) ascertain whether consumer confidence affects green consumption and (2) uncover the psychological mechanisms of this relationship, in a non-recession context. Drawing upon the stimulus-organism-response model, we developed a conceptual model, which we tested via mediation analysis, using data from a sample of Chinese consumers (n = 1,184). Results show that there is a positive relationship between consumer confidence and green purchase intention. Environmental and status consciousness partially mediates the positive relationship between consumer confidence and green purchase intention. We contribute to the literature on antecedents of green consumption by being the first to empirically establish the salience of consumer confidence in this domain. Investigating green purchase intention, which differs depending on consumer confidence level, has the potential to assist retailers in developing better marketing tactics. Our study also benefits economists and environmentalists by helping them better understand how consumer confidence fluctuations play critical roles in addressing economic growth-driven major environmental challenges.
•This study ascertains whether consumer confidence affects green purchase intention.•This study performs a parallel mediation analysis.•Consumer confidence is positively related to green purchase intention.•Environmental and status consciousnesses act as mediating mechanisms.
This study aims to investigate the potential effects of corporate environmental sustainability reporting on green consumerism. The study employed both primary and secondary data. The primary data ...collected using a survey method. Whereas, the secondary data on sustainability reporting collected from the company’s annual reports and the global reporting initiatives database. Multiple regression techniques employed to assess the data results. The study outcomes indicate that firm’s sustainability exposure and environmental responsiveness act as game-changer for green consumption practices, which ultimately be the threshold for changing the rationality and customer’s green choices. The results further revealed that environmental awareness significantly moderates the nexus between environmental disclosure and customer’s willingness to involve in eco-responsible consumption activities. The study hypotheses have practical significance and extend the theory of planned behavior by locating behavioral and non-behavioral constructs, in shaping eco-friendly consumption. Hence, the study findings propose new insight of relationship into sustainability literature by transforming the firm’s environmental exposure in sustaining greener consumption practices to protect the environmental damage by human activities. The present study put forward the policy guidelines that the intervention of firms into environmental activities and persistent sustainability policies helps to stimulate green consumption behavior.

•Environmental disclosure integrates consumer’s eco-consciousness and firm’s eco-responsiveness.•Behavioral intentions alone do not stimulate pro-environmental consumption.•Green consumption choices involve independent factors rather than behavioral intentions.•The firm’s environmental activities transform customer’s green intentions into green behavior.•Economic factors sustain eco-responsible behavior, either eco-awareness and exposure is high or low.
Increasing sustainability traction in business and the environmental consciousness of customers have forced multinationals to adopt eco-friendly processes. Despite using the different recycling ...approaches the textile industry is still fighting with problems like higher water pollution, emissions, and increased carbon footprint. Hence, the need for innovating green products or using sustainable material is growing and researchers still have discordance on the predictor and outcome of innovation in the industry. Considering this, the present study is tried to understand the impact of the environmental consciousness of consumers on the green performance of the textile industry. A conceptual model has been proposed which includes adaptability of green culture, innovation, green performance, and employee commitment. The study uses the data of 198 employees from textile manufacturing organizations through a structured questionnaire. With the help of the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, it was found that the most relevant factor of innovation is the adaptability of green culture and green performance was found as the major outcome and significant mediating role of employee commitment between innovation and green performance. The findings of the study would help the textile industry managers to create a green culture by creating its link with green innovation and green performance through developing environmental consciousness among the employees which further support the textile industry in pollution reduction.
Today's more “mindful” consumers’ food consumption decisions are changing as they attempt to balance egoistic and altruistic motivations. This study explores the relative importance of these types of ...motivations in influencing Australian consumers’ attitudes towards, and purchase frequency of, local food. Factors examined include ethical self-identity, environmental consciousness, health consciousness and food safety. Results indicate egoistic motivations may influence local food consumption decisions more strongly than altruistic motivations. Recommendations for producers and retailers of local food in appealing to more “mindful” consumers suggest more focused marketing and communication strategies, clearer branding and labelling of produce, and training of service staff.
As purchase power and consumption knowledge increase, consumers gradually demand safer and healthier products. In addition, consumers focus greater attention on organic food. This study investigates ...the relationship between environmental consciousness and organic food purchase intention with the mediating roles of perceived food quality and price sensitivity. The objective is to shed new light on our understanding of consumers' perceptions and behavioral intentions toward organic food. Using sample data of 518 consumers in different food retailers in China, empirical results show that environmental consciousness has a positive impact on organic food purchase intention. Perceived food quality has a mediating effect on the link between environmental consciousness and organic food purchase intention. Price sensitivity moderates the relationship between perceived food quality and organic food purchase intention. Furthermore, price sensitivity moderates the indirect effect of environmental consciousness on organic food purchase intention through perceived food quality.
•Use of biopolymers has emerged as a new paradigm of the ecological conservation.•Biopolymers are promising sources for various applications in daily life.•Biopolymers found applications as ...antioxidants and antimicrobials.•Biopolymers can replace synthetics without much adverse effects.•Further understanding on their mode of action will help explore them further.
